Re: upsetting news

I know exactly how you are felling, Mike is having his neck surgery next month and I'm freaking out, it's really becomming REAL now.
I can give you his surgeon's name if you like. Remember he needs to see a neurosurgeon, not an orthopedist.
I can certainly sympathize with you.

Make sure to get a second opinion before he makes the decision to do surgery.

- but I want him to get 1 more opinion from the Hospital of specail surgrey- in the city-

This is an EXCELLENT request.

Dr. Frank Cammisa is the head of spinal surgery - he fused my Dad's spine 2 years ago.

Like Jake, my Dad was also in a car accident. C4, C5, C6, and C7 were all badly damaged. He lived on pain meds, epidurals, physical therapy, massage therapy, accupuncture, and even SHOCK therapy for 2 years before deciding on the surgery.

He is now 2 years post-surg, and like a new man. The pain is down from a 9 or 10 to a 3.

I have TONS of info on this topic, because not only did it happen to 'us', but I work in a physical therapy facility and see many patients with the same problem every day.

FM if you have any questions - I'd love to help ease your mind a little bit.

Many s for you and DH

I'm so sorry, Beth. I've had surgery twice on my spine in the past 2 1/2 years to repair damage from a ski accident. I can tell you the recovery is painful but the long term results, including pain elimination, are worth it. I'll keep him in my prayers!

Definitely go with him and if you want more opinions then get them prior to them doing any kind of surgery. Try to stay positive, I'll remember the both of you in my prayers

Re: upsetting news

So sorry to hear that. There is still time to ask as many questions as you want, though!!!

As a lawyer, I can say it is really hard to settle cases involving the neck and back and it seems unfair, but a broken bone is often an easier case to work on. Still, with crushed vertebrae, you'd think they can offer more than 20K!!!

I am really upset right now- I just found out that Jake will need Neck surgey to repair nerve damaged and 3 crushed vertebrate that he suffered in a car accident 18 months ago

he is always in pain and I hate to see him live like that- but I am worried that if some goes wrong he could be paralyzed

I wish I went to the doctor with him- I feel like he doesn't ask the rights questions- they are going to run more tests tomorrow

You should go with him and get more opinions before deciding to go forward with surgery. FH had an accident a while back an injured discs in his back. He was rear ended recently by an 18 wheeler and that aggravated his condition I went with him to have the MRI and he has vicodin around for when it's really bad. Fortunately, a chiropractor and a pill once every few months is good enough for him now.

Re: upsetting news

I would be worried too, but remember that peolpe do these surgeries and turn out fine - you need to know the risks for liability sake, but you only hear the tragedies and never the good stories - FH reminds me that when I get nervous about going on a plane.

Someone on here was worried about her FH's jaw surgery - I shared something with her that someone once told me because I worry a lot - there have been illnesses and serious things in my family, so it makes me worry - my dad has a pacemaker defib after having a heart attack, bypass surgery, etc...

So, someone told me - Worrying is praying for somehting bad to happen.

It makes sense - we don't like to think that way, but think of all the energy you put out there when you worry - it is so hard to focus on the postive - but try!!!

Good luck - I'll pray for only good things!

Beth, see if you can call the doctor & ask some questions....It is definately something you want all the answers to prior to surgery
