I'd like to take a long weekend this fall (cus I have extra days I need to take off from work) and thought it would be fun to stay somewhere upstate for 2 nights and visit the wineries and go apple picking. What town would be a good place to stay? I was looking at New paltz, but its either really expensive, or like motelish places. Anyone have any suggestions?
TIA!!
*Irene, Im thinking October- do u guys want to come with??

Re: upstate trip
I have stayed in the Catskill, NY area a lot. The actual town name is Catskill. Leeds is nearby and a really cute little town. I have been staying in Leeds since I was born, basically. We stay at place called Rip Van Winkle that has orange log cabins (weird, I know) but I think they close Oct 1 or something. Astoria Motor Lodge might be open then - they have cabins too, and we used to stay there alllll the time. They are a little outdated though. But there are other places nearby, maybe a few in the town of Leeds. Windham Mtn is nearby, that town (not sure of the name) might have some cute places. But the area is great and only like 2.5 - 3 hours from LI.

We had fun up at Hunter Mountain. You may as well go to Vermont though - Killington is right outside of Albany. I love Cortinna Inn. I bet they have a weekend deal or something, that place is so awesome!

Re: upstate trip
how far is lake george? We want to go somewhere no further than 2 hours away... we have already done Amish country, and Newport. And we are already going to Plymouth MA for a friends wedding and making a long weekend out of it. Are there some more suggestions of where to go? I have heard other great things about lake george...

Re: upstate trip
Lake George is my favorite place for a long weekend!! There are so many cute shops and the lake is beautiful! We go every summer but have never been there in fall - it must be beautiful at that time.
Hunter Mountain is also very nice! My parents have a cabin up in the Catskills and every October we go up there for Columbus Day weekend (cant go this year for obv reasons! ) for Oktoberfest at Hunter! Look into it bc it's a lot of drunken fun! lol

I actually live in Woodstock NY. There are tons of shops and a 20-30 min car ride to Redhook, Catskill, and Saugerties where you can go apple picking and wine tasting!

There are tons of things to do there! FH actually wanted to get married at Opus 40 and have it catered by New World Cafe (two of our favorite places)
