US Post Office is Crazy!!!

I went to weigh my invitation this weekend...The lady at the post office told me that being that its 'fat' (i have a ribbon that I guess streches out the envelope a little bit) it may qualify as small parcel which cost $1.95 each!!!! I left so confused because she told me that it might pass as regular .65 cents or .85 cents postage depending on the post office that processes them. All I know is $1.95 each is crazy, my envelope is not larger than any invitations i've gotten in the past. At that rate I can drive all over the state of NY and hand deliver them personally!

US Post Office is Crazy!!!

Wow, that IS crazy! And all you need is for them to tell you it's only .65 or .85 to then go and find you need more postage!
My envelope was square and although it qualified for .65 according to weight, I had to pay $ 1.10 because of the size. I ended up putting 2 .65 stamps on each.

US Post Office is Crazy!!!

Wow, I can't believe that! I don't understand how the price can be so up in the air though. I will have to keep this in mind when ordering my invites.

US Post Office is Crazy!!!

I heard different post offices charge different prices. Try another office, or maybe go at another time and find someone else to help you. 1.95 is WAY too much.

Yep, this basically waht she told me... She said her office would charge me $1.95, but she hinted that if I looked elsewhere I could probably get away with .65 or .85 cents depending on how strict the office is.

So now I am on the search for a new post office haha. The fun never ends!

Re: US Post Office is Crazy!!!

I was told the same thing by my post office in bohemia....1.95 because I had a ribbon and it was too fat. About three weeks later i went back to the SAME post office, got a different person and they told me 65 cents. I said..are you sure?? He said...yes...he weighed it and that's what it would cost. SO, I bought all the stamps...went back a week later to mail them...got another guy who told me 65 cents as well*was paranoid so I triple checked before mailing**. Long story short...go back another day...and see if you get someone else. OR...go to another post office. You definitely shouldnt have to pay more than 65 cents. Goodluck

Clearly the lady didn't want to take a second to help you if you left confused...try another post office!

If you brought in an actual packed invitation they should have been able to tell you off the bat how much it was going to cost...if you get an answer like that again ask to speak with a manager and get a straight answer!

You can't have your invites returned to you because a post office employee didnt want to do their job!

US Post Office is Crazy!!!

I work at the post office and anything that makes the envelope stick up a little and anything that is an odd shape (such as square) can not pass through their machines and that's why they are suppose to charge extra for it because then it would have to be hand processed.

Now some clerks might not notice a slight bulge in the envelope so they'll just charge you based on weight. What I would do is put a heavy book on the envelope to try and flatten the ribbon a little and then bring it back to the post office.

US Post Office is Crazy!!!

I checked with another office and they told me .85 cents. The clerk gauranteed me that it would go through. I really hope it does. Unfortunately, the only 85 cent stamps they have are Birds of Prey, doesnt exactly go with my theme lol. I am putting two .45 centers on and keeping my fingers crossed.

Lesson learned: don't use a ribbon invitation lol.

does this mean that hand cancel/ stamping should cost $1.65 per or does it vary

It varies. I honestly don't know why the post office does this and they don't even have a set size as to how much of a bulge in the envelope constitutes extra postage and that's why you get different prices. It's so stupid. I wouldn't even bring in a single one to find out the cost. I would just bring everything in all at once because you can get a different price each time you go in.
