Varicella (Chicken pox) vaccine?

I just found out from my blood work that I have NO IMMUNITY to the chicken pox..and my OBGYN recommends that I absolutely get the chicken pox vaccine, especially if we are thinking of TTC. She said that you CANNOT TTC for three months after the vaccine.

ANyone have any experience with this vaccine?

Do you need to get this vaccine only if you've never had chicken pox?

I never had the chicken pox, so my MD ordered blood work to check and see if maybe I just had an immunity, but I don't.
If you had the chicken pox, then you would have immunity.

MY MD was against giving it to me, and my OB/GYN told me to get the vaccaine. I have been exposed thousands of times to chicken pox and have never had them. My sister had them bad as an adult, I touched the darn thing, we did not know what it was, until a few hours later when they were all over her body, and i never got it, we were even in the same house hoping I would get them I have not had to have blood drawn for anything lately, but I will have them check to see if I have an immunity to it, maybe I had a mild case when I was little, who knows. I am then going to get the vaccine.

WOW this is really important to know! Thank you for posting about it. I had a MILD case of chicken pox when I was young, but I should check it to see if I am immune, because you said you have to wait 3 months to TTC!!!!!

I also thought I was immune because I kissed my two cousins goodbye when they had the chicken pox (my mother wanted me to get them young so I wouldn't have a problem as an adult), but I never got them.
I also hung around with my two friends right before and during their chicken pox...and I still never got them,

So, we were convinced that maybe I had a very very mild case that we weren't aware was the actual chicken pox.
My MD ordered the varicella titer just to be safe and be sure that I had an immunity...we were shocked to see that I have absolutely no immunity against the chicken pox. Strange.

Yeah, it's worth getting all that bloodwork done before TTC.

I have no experience-but I would get it.. better safe than sorry- what would happen if you got the pox while you were PG.. getting the pox as an adult is GOD AWEFUL- I had it at 16 and it was terrible...

3 months isn't that long...

I'm def. getting it...and we have not even decided to TTC...so now is def. the best time.

Has anyone had this vaccine? I've read literature, but I have never met someone who had this vaccine.

I just found out that I don't have the immunity either to chicken pox and I had it when I was little.

We are actively TTCing so I'm not taking the vaccine because I'd have to wait at least 3 months to start up again, but if you have the time then definately get it.

Definitely get it! I had a similar case with me getting pregnant and then finding out I didn't have an immunity to German measles. It was scary to think of, even though it is much more rare than chicken pox! Now as soon as I deliver, I have to get my booster shot!

Kathy, I just went through vaccinations with my doctor, so I have a bunch of website bookmarked.

I found this on Varicella:

Immunize.org website:
If a woman receives varicella vaccine, how long should she wait before becoming pregnant?

Contrary to the information provided in the package insert (3 months), the ACIP recommends that a wait of 1 month is sufficient. (10/97)

From the CDC.gov website:
How long should a woman wait to become pregnant after receiving varicella vaccine?

The ACIP and the AAP recommend that a woman not become pregnant for at least one month following each dose of the vaccine. This differs from the package insert, which recommends a three month delay.

I was told by the medical director where I work and my GYN/OB that I would have to wait 3 months after my Measles (MMR) vaccination. I did some research and found otherwise. I asked my primary about it and he immediately responded with 1 month which backed up the research I had found.

Thanks for bringing up this topic and jenny5150 thanks for the links. Like others above I have always been around the chicken pox's and never got it. About 5 years ago, I thought I finally got it but would up it wasn't (but it may have been a strain of the virus - I never really found out what I had). I have been meaning to ask my dr about this vaccine forever now....I have a dr appt this week and I am going to ask if they can test to see if I have the immunity.
