It's possible they dont give you a swatch until last minute because they want you to get your veil there.
Don't stress! I got my veil from Barrons (where they custom make it to whatever color, trim, length, style you want) and was told 1 month turnaround. We told them we wont need it for 2 months, but that's still pretty quick and would give you time if you decided to wait.
My dress shop gave me a swatch from a dress they were altering at the time (my designer, same color fabric) and I brought that in and we matched it to the closest color (they have about 15 colors to choose from). My dress is 'natural' (raw silk) which is similar to a diamond white, and we ended up going with 'diamond white' which is what I would have guessed.
Can you go back and ask for a swatch of someone else's dress that they are altering that's the same color/designer, even though it's not your dress? it's unlikely that your dress will vary that much.
I'd suggest going to Barrons since their veils are SO reasonably priced. Absolute worst case, if you need to get a new veil remade when your dress comes in (which is very unlikely) you should have enough time to get veil 2 from Barrons, again for a really reasonable price. You can then sell veil 1 on ebay.
Hope this helps
I tried getting a sample from another dress they are altering and they wouldn't give it to me. They are very strange about their swatches. They told me that every single dress may be different as the dye lots are all different (I'm sure it'll be remotely close though), and that is why I can't get a swatch until MY actual dress comes in. Maybe I will try Barrons though (I've never heard of them). Thanks for the info!

I just did a google search for barrons but can't find them. Do they have a website? If not, where are they located?

While there is some truth to the fact that all dye lots can vary, I think it's unlikely to vary enough where it would make a noticeable difference. I think they just want to make sure you buy your veil there.
Barrons is located in Tri-County Flea Market - you can google that. They are right inside the front door.
I wouldn't order it without a swatch though - either a) beg them to give you one anyway, b) contact the manufacturer for one, c) ask girls on here if they have their swatch from same designer/fabric, d) ask girls on here what color veil they used.

You're probably right about them wanting me to buy my veil there. I tried a) and it hasn't worked, I guess I'll go on to b) through d). Thanks so much for the advice it definitely helps!

Re: Veil Dilemna
i ordered my dress in ivory and before the dress was physically in i went to tri county and ordered my veil in ivory.... it doesnt match 100 percent but its very very close...i think as long as you know the color of the dress you can order your veil

Re: Veil Dilemna
I used to work at a bridal store and if your dress is diamond white order a diamond white veil. If your dress is ivory diamond white should still be fine. Unless your dress is VERY ivory almost yellow/ beige order Ivory. Diamond white is a very safe color. The only other factor would be is there is ribbon edging. OR ...you could order 2 veils and see if you can wait until the dress comes in to pick them up. Though decision!
