How do you guys feel about this? FH almost didn't go in to a DJ appointment because of this. He felt really uncomfortable.

I think its cool...as long as they are professional during the appointment and you get a good vibe from them then you are going to be ok. Just listen to your gut

I don't see a problem with it, as long as they're still professional. A lot of people work from home now, especially if they have families. And as someone else mentioned, it's a way to keep their costs down, therefore giving YOU lower prices.

Honestly, I didn't have a problem with it; he did. He ranted on and on about how 'unprofessional' it was. You ladies are right though, most likely lower prices!

I didn't feel comfortable.
We went to a photographer appt in a house, they were wonderful, but we didn't feel comfortable bc of the office being in the house. We now refuse to go to a place that has their office in their home...

I don't mind it. I met with a few potential vendors that had offices in their homes. They were very professional. I think most vendors who don't work for big companies have offices in their home. You will probably have more room for negotiating since they don't have the overhead of an office. JMO

I absolutely don't care.
Not having to pay rent for a storefront passes lower prices onto the consumer.
I am that people actually find it strange. it's 2009...there are home-based businesses EVERYWHERE. Unless it was completely sketchy and unprofessional-looking, I can't see that it matters. If you're uncomfortable, then go with FH. I hardly think working out of home is unprofessional. Landscapers do it, hairdressers do it, tutors do it...helll, even DOCTORS do it

Don't rule out all home based vendors because of one. You may miss out on some of the best.

Re: Vendors with offices in thier homes
My photographer runs out of his home, at first when we drove up I was like what the h*ll because I just didnt expect it, we thought we were going to a store front. It was a little awkward the first few minutes but now that I have been to a lot of appointments with vendors, I would have to say that that meeting was probably the one we felt most comfortable/layed back in, and in all honesty one of the most professional ones too.

Re: Vendors with offices in thier homes
Honestly there are a lot of vendors that can run these things from their home.
Why does a DJ need an actual business location? That seems like an added expense to me and thus they might just charge you more for that. Same goes for Photographers, hair and makeup people, etc. Heck even some of the best cake artists work from home.
I think it's just an added expense for them to have to pay all the bills to have an 'official' office away from the home.... and like I mentioned they have to get the money to pay their bills from somewhere... our pockets!!!
I can understand your concern though... but as long as they are credible I see nothing wrong with this. They are still an approved business and should still be listed with BBB. Their skills also don't change according to whether or not they have a business location outside of the house or in the house.

Thanks! The DJ was very professional. Just wanted to see if anyone else experienced this. We haven't been to that many vendor appointments and I wanted to see if this was the norm.
