Vent- annoyance with the Imus fall out and college
Okay today in class two professors were discussing the issue of Imus and said they feel it was wrong to have such a backlash in a 'kidden' comment even if it was in poor taste. THAT WAS IT and this student fires back not in class but via email to the entire class and both professors that they were disrespectful and he was hurt by the comments. He then goes into details about how he didn't care for the comment that you can go to any part of this college and hear comments far worse and serious then those made by imus. WHICH IS TRUE!!!!
I fired a email back to everyone saying I was insulted that he had to carry his message so publicly and he could of resolved the issue or started a debate in class (which has been done numerous times in var. classes) and nipped it that way. Express how you feel I am all down for that but don't try to get someone fired because you disagree with them. That I have heard far worse in my days of college and working whereas a college professor once called every guy in my classroom a slur to gay guys because I was in FIT and that girls couldn't compair to a 'gay' eye in fashion. I never complained. I never complained when a african (a prof. from africa) said he hated all white people due to his experiences in south africa. I said hell yea if i witnessed what you did then i would be along side you. Did I complain NO its called educated debate.
I am so enraged over this whole PC crap we have to deal with today and the media emphasizing the importance of keeping your nose clean. Say what you feel then if you don't like it say you hate it, shut off the show and move on. I think the war is more important then some old man making a bad tast joke especially when there are other radio and tv personalities making far worse of a comment then that.
I also stated in the email that this kid shouldn't show up for the senior art exhibit because he maybe offended by certain imagery that is involved. One classmate of mine is doing shock art and has photographs of the koran with a time bomb around it, images of dead babies wrapped in plastic and so forth. what now the entire school will be shut down because someone was hurt? GOD i hate sensative people.
Sorry i had to get that off me chest.

Ya I agree that people are taking the imus thing waaaay too seriously. Who cares what some old man thinks or says? ya it was dumb of him, but does it really matter?? People say worse things alllllllll the time. Family guy, south park. If you don't like it- don't watch it.

Yes, Imus is a shock jock and all that BUT...
he made a derogatory comment towards blacks - specifically 'nappy-headed'. I've heard white, asian, hispanic and black girls called a ho so that isn't the issue (to me, at least).
However, say we're just about to knock the hating out of someone that is on the racist fence and all of a sudden Imus comes along and calls black girls 'nappy-headed hos' that fence person is all of sudden like - 'see, even Imus knows they're nappy-headed.' It just makes that on-the-fence racist back into a full racist. Same with impressionable kids who don't know yet.
For every step that we go forward toward a more unified community - something like this puts it back 10 years. Because now there's this huge racial divide again.
It's disheartening and sickening and yes, he should be fired. It was supposed to be a joke right? Why couldn't he have called them something NOT geared towards blacks?

I dont think he should have said what he did and should pay for it...I just don't get why he's not allowed to and others are...I stopped being shocked at what others say because ive been hearing it for so long. Howard makes fun of blacks ALL the time

I think it is sad that this happened and that the news brought it into everyones homes. Yes thousands of people listen to Imus, but then the news bring it to millions of people. I think they are just as much to blame.

Stern is a different kind of shock jock than Imus - you don't see Stern doing telethons. Anyway, it's all bullsh!t to me. Because of Stern and Imus and people like them, we will never have equality. Ever.
I'm waiting for someone to say that Star and Buckwild called white people 'crackers' or something and they weren't taken off the air but everyone knows it's entirely different....
This really makes me sad.

Interesting POV Jenn... Never really thought about it that way....
I just don't understand why Imus has to take the fall for so many other people that get away with using derogetory slurs (whether it be against a race, a gender, or even a sexual orientation). Look at Mel Gibson and Michael Richards, 2 people who are much more prominent figures than Imus and all they got was a slap on the wrist.
I'm not saying what Imus said was justified (I found it degrading to women and black women and an ingnorant statement in general), but what I am saying is that by punishing him the way he is being punished is almost the equivilant to stirpping away his 1st amendment rights. He apologized and was suspended for 2 weeks. I think that is sufficent because lets be honest, if Imus was black and he said something derogetory towards white people, we wouldn't be having this conversation, no?
Howard Stern spewed verbal diarrhea on a free radio for years and no one really bats an eyelash at the way he demeans women...
All in all, I think we all need to move on from this issue (as hard as it is going to be to do because the stupid media just perpetuates the issue )...

I disagree - their job is to report the news. Granted they have to judge what is deemed 'newsworthy' but this is definitely news to some people. If it wasn't - there wouldn't be this backlash... People as a whole are not as dumb as they're made out to be. If it's crap, it disappears after a few days, right?

People are going to say he can get away with it because he has Robin... I think it's bullshiit personally that that is why people think he can get away with it, but whatev...
It boils down to... if you don't like it than don't CHOOSE to listen to or watch it... it've simple.

I think its wrong regardless, Stern is also heard by so many more people than IMUS is.
Im sorry but its the same thing, not saying just with that situation but it happens all the time. If one race can say whatever they want about the other, and the other race has to watch everything they say then that is not equality to me

I agree, just bc he has robin there doesn't give him the right to say whatever he wants...If robin has no problem with it then great but she doesn't represent every black person

I also think it stinks because he is getting fired for doing something lots of other people do. And what he said was not right, but why makes it okay to fire and punish him, but not others? some rappers and some comedians say very insulting things all the time but it is almost always over looked.

Is what Howard Stern says on a paid radio station (lets not forgot he was taken off regular radio) comprable to something broadcast on a NEWS station? I say no. When people listen to Howard Stern they know what they're getting, and thats not saying its right, but it is expected. Something said on a proper news station is completely different. Just my opinion...

See and I don't think that gives Howard Stern license to say the things he says about women or anyone for that matter... I dont' care who your audience is, it doesn't make a difference to me....
ETA: and I get it, that's HS schtick, his routine, but do you think the black people in the audience of the comedy show Michael Richards performed at thought what he started screaming out was OK because, hey, he's a comedian, they should've expected it???

Yes, thats why I said in my post that it doesnt make it right, I just was just stating an opinion on why I think it is more of an issue with Imus than with others. And I said it was expected from ONE person, it wasnt a general statement, People were talking about Howard Stern and that is what I commented on. The whole 'hes a comedian they should have expected it???' is irrelevant to anything I said. And again, I plainly stated that it doesnt make it right.

I agree I think this whole thing has been blown out of proportion. Freedom of speech has been limited according to political correctness. I dont like imus, he degrades women on a constant basis. What he said was rude and inexcusable, and thats the bottom line. He will have another radio show and probably do it again. I know i have no desire to listen.
