Vent- annoyance with the Imus fall out and college
Original post by nifheim
Okay today in class two professors were discussing the issue of Imus and said they feel it was wrong to have such a backlash in a 'kidden' comment even if it was in poor taste. THAT WAS IT and this student fires back not in class but via email to the entire class and both professors that they were disrespectful and he was hurt by the comments. He then goes into details about how he didn't care for the comment that you can go to any part of this college and hear comments far worse and serious then those made by imus. WHICH IS TRUE!!!!
I fired a email back to everyone saying I was insulted that he had to carry his message so publicly and he could of resolved the issue or started a debate in class (which has been done numerous times in var. classes) and nipped it that way. Express how you feel I am all down for that but don't try to get someone fired because you disagree with them. That I have heard far worse in my days of college and working whereas a college professor once called every guy in my classroom a slur to gay guys because I was in FIT and that girls couldn't compair to a 'gay' eye in fashion. I never complained. I never complained when a african (a prof. from africa) said he hated all white people due to his experiences in south africa. I said hell yea if i witnessed what you did then i would be along side you. Did I complain NO its called educated debate.
I am so enraged over this whole PC crap we have to deal with today and the media emphasizing the importance of keeping your nose clean. Say what you feel then if you don't like it say you hate it, shut off the show and move on. I think the war is more important then some old man making a bad tast joke especially when there are other radio and tv personalities making far worse of a comment then that.
I also stated in the email that this kid shouldn't show up for the senior art exhibit because he maybe offended by certain imagery that is involved. One classmate of mine is doing shock art and has photographs of the koran with a time bomb around it, images of dead babies wrapped in plastic and so forth. what now the entire school will be shut down because someone was hurt? GOD i hate sensative people.
Sorry i had to get that off me chest.

I think it was a step in the right direction for NBC to do what they did. Kind of like a drunk driving zero tolerance policy.
If Hollywood and other TV and radio stations would follow that policy, THEN we could move forward.
ETA: Imus is going to cry 'other people do it, why can't I?' That's BS. Just because it's been done before and people continue to do it does NOT make it right. A juvenile argument if I've ever heard one. How many times did you tell your parents 'but Jane's mom lets her do this... '

One thing i really don't understand is why this comment caused national uproar, but comments about women, jewish people, homosexuals ect. are discouraged with a slap on the wrist or 'rehab'. His comment deserves punishment, but what does this say to other minorities who don't have the same defense system? Where is the line drawn between offensive and unacceptable?

Re: Vent- annoyance with the Imus fall out and college
honestly i really don't get it. i just don't take offense to anything I guess. I giggle at every remarks that was negative that was given to me. I have been called the c word at my job, i have had people at past jobs complain how women are worthless never once did i cry about it i just made my agrument and moved on.
I can't debate about the whole race thing. I judge everyone as best as possible blindly. I judge a person by character. I realize I don't always follow that rule and it is a pitty but it is due to certain experiences. I just don't like Al Sharpton i think he is the biggest racist ever and yet people stand behind him. I feel he does not do service to his community but only sets a greater gap between races. He hates white people and hates spanish people. He hates everything that is not black and yet no one brings this up. I have seen him speak 'off camera' this man hates HATES yet not a thing is done.
I feel free speach is free speach. don't like it shut it off. should imus be slapped with someone for his comments - possibly. I feel sad he was fired because honestly i think it was only due to the fact imus was trying to be funny and not evil with his words. In six months he will be on xm or sirius unless he retires. That is what opie and anthony had to do after sex for sam when a couple on the show had sex at st. pats in NYC for a contest. I thought it was a brilliant move for the couple to push the envelope like that and i laughed hard when listening to it and felt bad that they radio personalities got fired and the actual couple had no issues given to them.
My main point of this rant was why get your panties in a bunch over a discussion in a classroom? I thought that was what college was for. Just don't wine or complain because someone has a diff. opinion then you discuss it. But not with a email to the entire class but in person.

Okay first of all Howard was not 'taken off' of regular radio - he decided to move to satellite . . . They WANTED him to stay, no matter how offensive he was.
But my point is that our society is ruled by ONLY the 'most sensitive member.' If thousands of people heard Imus' comment and did not think he should get fired but 2% of the people that heard it thought he should get fired then BAM! He is fired, end of story.
This is a stupid comparison but for example: Around Christmas time, one airport had Christmas trees all over the place. MILLIONS of people walked by them and did not even think about them. A few Muslims ( I mean literally less then 20) complained and BAM! ALL Holiday paraphernalia was removed from the airport within days.
I have never and WILL NEVER be offended by what someone says IF THEY DO NOT KNOW ME! I have people tell me that all Sicilians are in the Mafia and are greasy. Look at the Sopranos!!!!I have been called a WOP and a guinea. But that will never hurt me! If you said 'Matilde is not a caring person' that is a statement that would upset me. . . Because it is about ME and more likely to be said by someone who knows me.
If our society continues to be ruled by the most sensitive person - it is just a slippery slope ( I hate that term!) until NO jokes can be made, NO songs can be sung and there can be NO commentary on what is going on in our world.
Okay - I am done now - this really upsets me that our country is turning into this. Seriously, we are supposed to be the most free? We have the most limiting society - go to any European country and you will see how backward we really are when it comes to freedoms!

Sorry to crash but you took my words right out my mouth. I couldnt agree any more with you! Alot of people dont understand that comments like these have really bad consequences to all of us, particularly women, on an individual basis even though many of you may not think that since it wasnt 'directly' aimed at you. Im just going to leave it at that b/c i can write a novel on here about all of the consequences i face and all of you face because of this type of launguage and behavior. Now there is a good paper topic

Ok, yes, my mistake, Howard Stern did choose to leave after being slapped with ridiculous fines - and not being allowed to continue his show in the same manner. So yes, of course, K-Rock wanted him to stay, most things boil down to dollar bills. Sorry for choosing the wrong words. Think about what you would hear all the time if there was NO censorship - no, thanks. It's interesting how girls on here are attacking what others post in a discussion basically about free speech. I just find that funny.

I'm soooo sorry - did you think that i was attacking you? Not even a little bit and i am 100% sorry if you took it that way! I just wanted to correct that one little thing and then continue on with my point
and you are totally right attacking what others say is totally out of place in this discussion
You are right - censorship did change his show and i apologize if my words came out confrontational!!

I just think people get so intense, which is fine, that they don't realize what they are saying. I know I do it all the time.

Re: Vent- annoyance with the Imus fall out and college
pardon my complete naive ignorance, but i really dont know what a 'nappy-headed ho' means. is it offensive because of the 'nappy-headed' part or the 'ho' part? i dont actually know what 'NH' means, is it a derogatory word for the hair? i really wasnt sure, in any event, i understand that it is offensive and unacceptable but i was curious to hear maybe from african americans on the board about the history of the word and why it is offensive. i was just assuming that the 'NH' part makes it offensive because every race and group of women gets called a ho, so thats not really african american specific. education is the best tool to fight ignorance, and if the words are explained maybe they can lose their power. i could be completely wrong, and i apologize if i am offending anyone!

Yes, Imus is a shock jock and all that BUT...
he made a derogatory comment towards blacks - specifically 'nappy-headed'. I've heard white, asian, hispanic and black girls called a ho so that isn't the issue (to me, at least).
However, say we're just about to knock the hating out of someone that is on the racist fence and all of a sudden Imus comes along and calls black girls 'nappy-headed hos' that fence person is all of sudden like - 'see, even Imus knows they're nappy-headed.' It just makes that on-the-fence racist back into a full racist. Same with impressionable kids who don't know yet.
For every step that we go forward toward a more unified community - something like this puts it back 10 years. Because now there's this huge racial divide again.
It's disheartening and sickening and yes, he should be fired. It was supposed to be a joke right? Why couldn't he have called them something NOT geared towards blacks?
well said jenn and i couldnt agree more

he should not be fired..thats going to far
then rappers should be fired by their record labels cause they use such language all the time
but they are not because people are making money off of their sales..
thats why this is different
it shouldnt be ok for say ludacris to have 'hoes in different area codes'
but this guy makes one comment and its taken way to far
im done..i dont want to start fights..but thats JMO

OMG off topic but you never heard of him? I feel old...I wouldn't say it wasn't being racist, I don't think anyone is debating that fact.
The thing is alot of people don't understand why he is getting punished for something that is everywhere you turn. Movies, tv shows, songs, just about everywhere.
