Vent- annoyance with the Imus fall out and college

Original post by nifheim

Okay today in class two professors were discussing the issue of Imus and said they feel it was wrong to have such a backlash in a 'kidden' comment even if it was in poor taste. THAT WAS IT and this student fires back not in class but via email to the entire class and both professors that they were disrespectful and he was hurt by the comments. He then goes into details about how he didn't care for the comment that you can go to any part of this college and hear comments far worse and serious then those made by imus. WHICH IS TRUE!!!!

I fired a email back to everyone saying I was insulted that he had to carry his message so publicly and he could of resolved the issue or started a debate in class (which has been done numerous times in var. classes) and nipped it that way. Express how you feel I am all down for that but don't try to get someone fired because you disagree with them. That I have heard far worse in my days of college and working whereas a college professor once called every guy in my classroom a slur to gay guys because I was in FIT and that girls couldn't compair to a 'gay' eye in fashion. I never complained. I never complained when a african (a prof. from africa) said he hated all white people due to his experiences in south africa. I said hell yea if i witnessed what you did then i would be along side you. Did I complain NO its called educated debate.

I am so enraged over this whole PC crap we have to deal with today and the media emphasizing the importance of keeping your nose clean. Say what you feel then if you don't like it say you hate it, shut off the show and move on. I think the war is more important then some old man making a bad tast joke especially when there are other radio and tv personalities making far worse of a comment then that.

I also stated in the email that this kid shouldn't show up for the senior art exhibit because he maybe offended by certain imagery that is involved. One classmate of mine is doing shock art and has photographs of the koran with a time bomb around it, images of dead babies wrapped in plastic and so forth. what now the entire school will be shut down because someone was hurt? GOD i hate sensative people.

Sorry i had to get that off me chest.

im not even going to get started with this whole thing..its been taken WAY too far and it should stop..hes an old man that i never even heard of until a few days ago..so..everyone needs to get over it..he wasnt being racist..there were white people there too

if it was the other way around..nothing would have been said..thats all

OMG off topic but you never heard of him? I feel old...I wouldn't say it wasn't being racist, I don't think anyone is debating that fact.

The thing is alot of people don't understand why he is getting punished for something that is everywhere you turn. Movies, tv shows, songs, just about everywhere.

im not sure if i have or havent..he looked familiar when i saw him..but the name i dont think i heard of..didnt mean to make you feel old..lol..your not..youre under 30..

and thats my point as well..its not like he is the only person that is saying this..thats what gets me mad..

and im not on his side really..i mean hes a liberal..there is nothing that i hate more then one of those..ann coulter is my hero <3

pardon my complete naive ignorance, but i really dont know what a 'nappy-headed ho' means. is it offensive because of the 'nappy-headed' part or the 'ho' part? i dont actually know what 'NH' means, is it a derogatory word for the hair? i really wasnt sure, in any event, i understand that it is offensive and unacceptable but i was curious to hear maybe from african americans on the board about the history of the word and why it is offensive. i was just assuming that the 'NH' part makes it offensive because every race and group of women gets called a ho, so thats not really african american specific. education is the best tool to fight ignorance, and if the words are explained maybe they can lose their power. i could be completely wrong, and i apologize if i am offending anyone!

I'm sorry i'm sparking all of this up again but this is from the point of view of an african-american female...I was extremely offended by what Imus said? Why? Well, it wasn't particularly the 'ho' part...unfortunately, black women and women of every race are called hos and people seem to be alright with that but anyway, I was offended by the 'nappy-headed part'...on the rutgers basketball team, there are women of many different races, if he would've just called all of the girls on the team hos, that would've been bad enough...but the fact that he had to go out of his way to target my particular race out of all of the other races of girls on the team was extremely offensive.. it was tantamount to saying that they were inferior to the girls of other races...and these are educated girls...i'm still extremely pissed off by that and i'm glad his @$$ got fired...but I do agree that others are getting away with the same thing but it's wrong regardless, and it is definitely putting a ridge between the races once more...JMO

One thing i really don't understand is why this comment caused national uproar, but comments about women, jewish people, homosexuals ect. are discouraged with a slap on the wrist or 'rehab'. His comment deserves punishment, but what does this say to other minorities who don't have the same defense system? Where is the line drawn between offensive and unacceptable?

that is what bothers me.

imus was wrong!! And there should be consequesnces.

but like you said... comments about other races, prefrences etc.. arent given as harsh of a consequence

Who was it.. that actor on a new show.. sorry maybe Greys that in real life is Gay and another actor on the show made a gay comment about it. i dont think he was fired?

this doesnt really pertain.. but i dont think howard was fired he opted to leave before having to deal with more fines.

He was definitely wrong for being homophobic, and mel gibson was wrong with being anti-semitic, but the problem with this society is that there are people that agree with this crap and as a result, people are getting away with saying these horrible things that keep society divided...but it's so hard because at the same time, you can't go firing everyone that says something you don't like...that's why this will never end...as long as there are ignorant people in the world, things like this will always come up

Okay first of all Howard was not 'taken off' of regular radio - he decided to move to satellite . . . They WANTED him to stay, no matter how offensive he was.

But my point is that our society is ruled by ONLY the 'most sensitive member.' If thousands of people heard Imus' comment and did not think he should get fired but 2% of the people that heard it thought he should get fired then BAM! He is fired, end of story.

This is a stupid comparison but for example:
Around Christmas time, one airport had Christmas trees all over the place. MILLIONS of people walked by them and did not even think about them. A few Muslims ( I mean literally less then 20) complained and BAM! ALL Holiday paraphernalia was removed from the airport within days.

I have never and WILL NEVER be offended by what someone says IF THEY DO NOT KNOW ME! I have people tell me that all Sicilians are in the Mafia and are greasy. Look at the Sopranos!!!!I have been called a WOP and a guinea. But that will never hurt me! If you said 'Matilde is not a caring person' that is a statement that would upset me. . . Because it is about ME and more likely to be said by someone who knows me.

If our society continues to be ruled by the most sensitive person - it is just a slippery slope ( I hate that term!) until NO jokes can be made, NO songs can be sung and there can be NO commentary on what is going on in our world.

Okay - I am done now - this really upsets me that our country is turning into this. Seriously, we are supposed to be the most free? We have the most limiting society - go to any European country and you will see how backward we really are when it comes to freedoms!

and just because i sound like i am on an angry tirade:

well said Tilde!!!!

freedom of speech..but the government can tell you what is and what isnt ok..its completely hypocritical and stupid..the poor man lost his job over something silly..he did not wake up one day and come up with that on his own..HE HEARD IT SOMEWHERE!!!..so lets go directly to the source and stop it there so it doesnt happen again..this is getting on my nerves now and once again..its just to liberal for me to deal with

What's the big deal about it?

Most of you girls will never know what the big deal is.
Hearing a comment like that from him just send us back on the plantations. Some of you might choose to compare the comment to what some of the rappers say on their lyrics, but I never heard any of them calling black women 'nappy headed hoes'. They do disrespect women in their lyrics and there have been marches by women against some of their lyrics.
It is a very sensitive situation when a race that used to oppress the other used derogatory words towards them, because it brought back all the memories that they are trying to escape.
He must have heard it somewhere, I wonder where?
It's not OK to make negative comments about any races. And if you believe that something is wrong, it's OK to march against it. If MLK Jr. didn't I don't think I would even had the chance to state my opinion on this site.

I'm glad he's fired, my mind is at ease a little bit. I won't be afraid to complain to my HR about comments made towards me at my jobs based on my skin color, my gender etc.

i DO think its a big deal and I also think, as i stated before, that its wrong for HOT 97 and 105.1 to call white people 'crackers' every morning - i listen to them and I do get offended

i do not agree that its the same as rap lyrics - history shows and it is true that people can make fun or tease THEMSELVES - it is NOT the same when someone else does it -
reason being, people dont hate themselves BUT when that kind of humor is coming from somewhere or someone else, there is usually more behind it

It's not right, one thing I can suggest is for you to stop listening to them. Boycotting have worked before and it can work again.
when Star was on power 105 I encouraged everyone that I knew to not listen to him. It might have not made a big difference with his ratings, but I was glad to stand for something I believe in.
It's not right to make negative comments about anyone regardless of race and gender.

i agree
one of my girlfriends sent hot97 an email that we are educators in an urban area, we listen and enjoy hip hop but do not enjoy their constant racist remarks about white people and that we DO intend to boycott

Re: Vent- annoyance with the Imus fall out and college

Hello Everyone -

I have just read the 3 pages of comments from everyone and its good to see a healthy debate as well as an opportunity for people to get their opinions out there. I have been listening to the news and radio regarding IMUS' statements and I have to say that his comment was not just to African American women (which I am) but to women over all.

I personally took more offense to him calling the women hoes than calling them nappy-headed... Granted he was out of line to do that... But him degrading women in general to call them a hoe is way out of line! We as women have dignity and have been raised in a manner that no one should ever call us out of our name... And by him doing that to a person he doesn't know or has ever met is just deplorable... What if he said oh those LI hoes.. or those NYC hoes.. or those LIW hoes.. I bet you everyone of you would be in an uproar because he degraded you.. don't let the whole racial aspect overshadow the overarching aspect of him calling people out of their name and being extremely disrespectful... We are women who do not deserve to be disrespected by anyone but especially someone who is on a Nationally syndicated radio and television who is considered influential in society...

To address what some of you said about the rappers and singers degrading their own women.. I think that Imus' comment will now put more of a focus on these rappers who do that.. I know some of you don't listen to the respectible African-American morning shows such as Tom Joyner, Steve Harvey and the afternoon show of Michael Baisden.. however, they have been raising this very issue.. That the rappers & the record labels need to stop inciting this talk... and to make a change... The record labels are those who tell the rappers to rap the deplorable lyrics... they are the ones who feel that there is a market for it.. There used to be a time where there was positive rap.. where people didn't degrade women.. but these labels feel that there isn't a market for it.. so now they only give deals to those who have a rough image.. who talk about guns and gangs and call a woman out of her name.. If our society would raise up and refuse to support this then maybe there will be less Imus' or Mel Gibsons or Isaiah Washingtons... But if we keep letting it circulate there will never be a change...

Ok.. I'm off of my soap box now...
