Vent- annoyance with the Imus fall out and college

Original post by nifheim

Okay today in class two professors were discussing the issue of Imus and said they feel it was wrong to have such a backlash in a 'kidden' comment even if it was in poor taste. THAT WAS IT and this student fires back not in class but via email to the entire class and both professors that they were disrespectful and he was hurt by the comments. He then goes into details about how he didn't care for the comment that you can go to any part of this college and hear comments far worse and serious then those made by imus. WHICH IS TRUE!!!!

I fired a email back to everyone saying I was insulted that he had to carry his message so publicly and he could of resolved the issue or started a debate in class (which has been done numerous times in var. classes) and nipped it that way. Express how you feel I am all down for that but don't try to get someone fired because you disagree with them. That I have heard far worse in my days of college and working whereas a college professor once called every guy in my classroom a slur to gay guys because I was in FIT and that girls couldn't compair to a 'gay' eye in fashion. I never complained. I never complained when a african (a prof. from africa) said he hated all white people due to his experiences in south africa. I said hell yea if i witnessed what you did then i would be along side you. Did I complain NO its called educated debate.

I am so enraged over this whole PC crap we have to deal with today and the media emphasizing the importance of keeping your nose clean. Say what you feel then if you don't like it say you hate it, shut off the show and move on. I think the war is more important then some old man making a bad tast joke especially when there are other radio and tv personalities making far worse of a comment then that.

I also stated in the email that this kid shouldn't show up for the senior art exhibit because he maybe offended by certain imagery that is involved. One classmate of mine is doing shock art and has photographs of the koran with a time bomb around it, images of dead babies wrapped in plastic and so forth. what now the entire school will be shut down because someone was hurt? GOD i hate sensative people.

Sorry i had to get that off me chest.

What's the big deal about it?

Most of you girls will never know what the big deal is.
Hearing a comment like that from him just send us back on the plantations. Some of you might choose to compare the comment to what some of the rappers say on their lyrics, but I never heard any of them calling black women 'nappy headed hoes'. They do disrespect women in their lyrics and there have been marches by women against some of their lyrics.
It is a very sensitive situation when a race that used to oppress the other used derogatory words towards them, because it brought back all the memories that they are trying to escape.
He must have heard it somewhere, I wonder where?
It's not OK to make negative comments about any races. And if you believe that something is wrong, it's OK to march against it. If MLK Jr. didn't I don't think I would even had the chance to state my opinion on this site.

I'm glad he's fired, my mind is at ease a little bit. I won't be afraid to complain to my HR about comments made towards me at my jobs based on my skin color, my gender etc.

i dont think it was right what he did, and i understand and do think it was racist, i stated that in another post...My whole thing is how come nobody has said anything before when others have done it, thats what boogles my mind...There were times i heard howard stern say things about other races and i was like how are people not getting upset over this.

I understand what you are saying about the music lyrics but when something similar happened a little while ago, this black guy on a social affairs type message board made a great point. Many people were disappointed and upset with what someone said...This black guy said, what do you expect other races to say about our women when we dont even respect our own women. He talked about how in all these rap songs and videos women are being disrespected and its done in a way to be proud and teaching the younger black generation that this is ok. He went on and on and made alot of great points and I believe he was right. Its like if i dont have respect for something then i cant expect others to do the same. So its wrong in music lyrics to be disrespectful to women, radio, tv, movies or wherever.

Ill be honest, as far as what is right to do or say in our society, ive given up on it completely. Years ago when i was younger i used to be a person who believed that just because something is on tv that it wont effect kids, just bc they see something bad doesnt mean they'll do it...I was thinking about something not too long ago and realized how wrong i was. Look years back a couple of generations, movies, music and television were wholesome, and look at how the kids were then. Now look at them, its even different than when i grew up. Now you have all these young girls around 13-16 and a little older who want to be like paris hilton, christina aguilera and all those girls. They are dressing sexier than ever, doing things kids their age didn't do, they are accepting of things that people never were...We show people that its ok to do drugs, we infact idolize them ... we show its ok for a girl to walk around naked and getting disrespected, no wonder so many girls are falling into destructive relationships. I can go on and on, but sadly along the lines somehow censorship has disappeared, there is no line to cross anymore, they have all been crossed. They kept letting little things go and as more time passed by it became more and more lenient to the point where now there are no boundaries...Its sad, i dont even want to think what it will be like when my kids are teenagers

oh man. don't get me started on this one.

I listen to Imus every morning. We may not always agree politically, but that man has done more for disadvantaged kids and autism that any other radio personality out there (ok, I don't know that for a fact....but I'd be willing to guess that he's close to the top, if not at THE top). He has raised millions and millions of dollars.

I'm not saying that makes the man a saint. It doesn't. What he did was wrong. What he said was wrong.

I agree that any comments made that are racist are a step in the wrong direction. I'm not denying that.

But what has ensued because of this?!?! I'm boggled. Literally boggled.

An example was being made of him. I really believe that.

And Sharpton?! Don't even get me started. Tawana Brawley, anyone?! That man makes a LIVING out of ruining people's lives. And like Linds said, I'm sure the Duke lacrosse players are not holding their breath for an apology from Rev. Shartpon anytime soon.

PS - Tilde, I agree with you a billion percent, by the way.

Yeah I think the Duke players should make a big deal about that and demand an apology. Al sharpton demanded an apology from IMUS, now its his turn.

there is a brilliant article in support of not what imus had said but what this whole outcry is doing by a talented journalist. It was mentioned multi times on opie and anthony, stern and var. other programs. But like usual i get to a computer and forget the name/newspaper. I thought it was the chicago sun but can't seem to find it. Once i do i will post it.

Imus isn’t the real bad guy
Instead of wasting time on irrelevant shock jock, black leaders need to be fighting a growing gangster culture.
By JASON WHITLOCK - Columnist

Thank you, Don Imus. You’ve given us (black people) an excuse to avoid our real problem.

You’ve given Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson another opportunity to pretend that the old fight, which is now the safe and lucrative fight, is still the most important fight in our push for true economic and social equality.

You’ve given Vivian Stringer and Rutgers the chance to hold a nationally televised recruiting celebration expertly disguised as a news conference to respond to your poor attempt at humor.

Thank you, Don Imus. You extended Black History Month to April, and we can once again wallow in victimhood, protest like it’s 1965 and delude ourselves into believing that fixing your hatred is more necessary than eradicating our self-hatred.

The bigots win again.

While we’re fixated on a bad joke cracked by an irrelevant, bad shock jock, I’m sure at least one of the marvelous young women on the Rutgers basketball team is somewhere snapping her fingers to the beat of 50 Cent’s or Snoop Dogg’s or Young Jeezy’s latest ode glorifying nappy-headed pimps and hos.

I ain’t saying Jesse, Al and Vivian are gold-diggas, but they don’t have the heart to mount a legitimate campaign against the real black-folk killas.

It is us. At this time, we are our own worst enemies. We have allowed our youths to buy into a culture (hip hop) that has been perverted, corrupted and overtaken by prison culture. The music, attitude and behavior expressed in this culture is anti-black, anti-education, demeaning, self-destructive, pro-drug dealing and violent.

Rather than confront this heinous enemy from within, we sit back and wait for someone like Imus to have a slip of the tongue and make the mistake of repeating the things we say about ourselves.

It’s embarrassing. Dave Chappelle was offered $50 million to make racially insensitive jokes about black and white people on TV. He was hailed as a genius. Black comedians routinely crack jokes about white and black people, and we all laugh out loud.

I’m no Don Imus apologist. He and his tiny companion Mike Lupica blasted me after I fell out with ESPN. Imus is a hack.

But, in my view, he didn’t do anything outside the norm for shock jocks and comedians. He also offered an apology. That should’ve been the end of this whole affair. Instead, it’s only the beginning. It’s an opportunity for Stringer, Jackson and Sharpton to step on victim platforms and elevate themselves and their agenda$.

I watched the Rutgers news conference and was ashamed.

Martin Luther King Jr. spoke for eight minutes in 1963 at the March on Washington. At the time, black people could be lynched and denied fundamental rights with little thought. With the comments of a talk-show host most of her players had never heard of before last week serving as her excuse, Vivian Stringer rambled on for 30 minutes about the amazing season her team had.

Somehow, we’re supposed to believe that the comments of a man with virtually no connection to the sports world ruined Rutgers’ wonderful season. Had a broadcaster with credibility and a platform in the sports world uttered the words Imus did, I could understand a level of outrage.

But an hourlong press conference over a man who has already apologized, already been suspended and is already insignificant is just plain intellectually dishonest. This is opportunism. This is a distraction.

In the grand scheme, Don Imus is no threat to us in general and no threat to black women in particular. If his words are so powerful and so destructive and must be rebuked so forcefully, then what should we do about the idiot rappers on BET, MTV and every black-owned radio station in the country who use words much more powerful and much more destructive?

I don’t listen or watch Imus’ show regularly. Has he at any point glorified selling crack cocaine to black women? Has he celebrated black men shooting each other randomly? Has he suggested in any way that it’s cool to be a baby-daddy rather than a husband and a parent? Does he tell his listeners that they’re suckers for pursuing education and that they’re selling out their race if they do?

When Imus does any of that, call me and I’ll get upset. Until then, he is what he is — a washed-up shock jock who is very easy to ignore when you’re not looking to be made a victim.

No. We all know where the real battleground is. We know that the gangsta rappers and their followers in the athletic world have far bigger platforms to negatively define us than some old white man with a bad radio show. There’s no money and lots of danger in that battle, so Jesse and Al are going to sit it out.

Re: Vent- annoyance with the Imus fall out and college

That was a great article and EXACTLY what i posted about yesterday when i said i read something a black man saying that black men disrespect black women in our culture and its ok to do that but when someone else does it, which they shouldn't do, but just because you're the same race does not mean you get to disrespect your own people. It went on and on and made all the points this article made, which i completely agree with...You cant punish one person and meanwhile accept everyone else who does the same.

Unfortunately this is accepted in our society...I don't evenknow what it means to disrespect a woman anymore because seems that almost anything is acceptable. And its not just men that are to blame, look at the women in the media, they dont have respect for themselves and try to portray a positive female role model.

The media only idolizes these alcoholic, drug addicted, sleezy young girls...Everywhere you turn they're the only ones you see in magazines, tv, songs or wherever. The media shows young girls out there that this is what to inspire to be, acting this way will get you alot of popularity and success.

what a joke-- people will listen to a man who is charged with gun possession and selling drugs-- what a rolemodel....

sorry I personally don't like him, had the 'unfortunate' opportunity to serve him beverages at an SNL cast party and that perv can't keep his hands off other women's asses, including his waitress' me' that evening, IMO he has no right to judge anybody especially on the topic of degrading women... perv

Re: Vent- annoyance with the Imus fall out and college

I just saw this post on myspace and this is completely true and I HATE DOING THIS but it has to be done.

I have no issues to state Imus was wrong and did disrespect african americans and women but I have a issue that there is a major double standard in this country and its not just black and white it effects the double standard of what is acceptable to say and do and who gets 'punished'.

I want to state the fact that I am really feeling a bad backlash in communities comming with this. I realize in time it goes away and people go back to normal life but I am hearing people feeling pushed to keep their mouths shut in fear of being fired over taking sides in this subject. I am afraid that this seriously splitting this country apart when we need to be a union to be strong in order to get out of this mess of a war going on. We also need to analyze the fact that today people's lives are still in disarray in the south becaues of katrina and THAT is more important then some old fart saying a line to be 'edgy'.

And bringing it back to my point of posting this - WHY CAN'T PEOPLE DISCUSS things in a college with out being accused of being racist. I HATE THIS - today the department head had to send out email not appologizing but restated it was a open discussion. WHY WHY WHY??? I want to put my foot through the damn door at this point because i am tired of people having to apologize over a discusion or opinion.

Today Don Imus was fired for calling the Rutgers University basketball team 'nappy headed hos'. Sure, that was inappropriate, but did the punishment fit the crime? Maybe we should look at the two guys who pushed this issue until Imus was fired.

Jesse Jackson says it's a question of morality, and what's right and what's wrong.

Just so we're clear:

Imus Calling Black Women 'nappy headed hos': Wrong.

Jesse Jackson calling Jews 'Hymies' and referring to New York as 'Hymietown' : Right. (Washington Post, 1984)

Imus Calling Black Women 'nappy headed hos': Wrong.

Jesse Jackson having an affair and Impregnating Karin Stanford, then using rainbow coalition funds to pay her $40,000 and purchasing a $365,000 house to keep her quiet: Right

Jesse Jackson not paying child support for this child, and not visiting her: Right

Jesse Jackson Saying Duke La Crosse Rape Suspects who have been aquitted 'deserved the negative attention' because they weren't acting morally by hiring a stripper: Right

I'm glad we have someone with strong moral values like Jesse Jackson to make sure nobody makes racist jokes on radio stations!

Thanks for showing us what's right and what's wrong Jesse.

And who can forget Al Sharpton, another strong moral figure who knows the power of words:

After District Attorney Steven Pagones failed to prosecute white suspects for raping a black girl (because evidence showed the story was fabricated) Al Sharpton accused Pagones Himself of raping the girl. Pagones successfully sued him for Defamation. Right

But it gets better:

Imus Calling Black Women 'nappy headed hos': Wrong.

In 1995, Sharpton led a protest in Harlem against the plans of Freddy's Fashion Mart, a Jewish-owned clothing store, to expand into a black neighborhood. Sharpton told the protesters, 'We will not stand by and allow them to move this brother so that some white interloper can expand his business.' Three months later, an armed protester forcibly entered the store and burned it down, killing himself and seven others. Right

Thanks Jesse and Al for showing us what's right and wrong. I'm glad we can finally see the light now. I'm glad you guys stopped this guy, and all his charities for sick and homeless children, that will now dry up. Thanks guys!

This was great

THIS IS MY PROBLEM WITH THIS WHOLE THING!!!! I see these things being done left and right and ONE man gets punished...Yes people should pay for their mistakes. But whenever i turn around and all i see are people being racist in songs, movies, tv, being disrespectful to women in general and go too far. So why is he the only one...Guess what they started this now lets see others getting what they deserve.

And i believe in practice what you preach...These men obviously dont live by example

Honestly, this is just so ridiculous. I cannot even believe that this is going on. Freedom of speech apparently only applies when everyone agrees with you. It is seriously stupid that this guy cannot make a comment like that without losing his job. Meanwhile if you listen to Hot 97 they can comment about 'ignorant crackers' without anyone saying anything. When I hear them comment about 'crackers'... I am not offended because they were not speaking to me directly. Just like Imus wasn't speaking to all black women. For all black women to feel offended is just absurd. Meanwhile, there are plenty of 'ho's' out there who are 'not doing s h * t' according to Snoop. They rap terrible stuff about all these women all day long. No black women seem to have a problem with that.

For anyone to think that this is setting an example... it's not. The only reason he lost his job is because the station was losing just about all of their advertisers. The advertisers pulled out of their contracts just so they wouldn't be in the middle of this controversy. Not because they think what he said was wrong. This hasn't changed anyones mind about what is right and what is wrong. There will always be people (of every ethnicity and religion) that are not tolerant of other peoples views. Does that mean that no one should be entitled to their own opinion anymore?

I agree with what someone said earlier, if anything this should be more about WOMEn not blacks...the ho part is alot more offensive.

Nappy-haired, he didnt mean it in a nice way but then again i always hear jokes about pastey white people, people joke about hindu and muslims turbin's-oh its ok to joke around about that?, a hindu's red dot, asian's eyes...These are all jokes that i can guarantee blacks have said before, and i have seen it plenty of times...Hmmm you know what next time i hear the word cracker on hot 97 i am complaining and seriously i am. That is not meant in a nice way, and its offensive to call someone a cracker.

Regardless of the double-standard issue - what he did was WRONG.

Just because Star and Buckwild and Stern and Isaiah Washington and others who have been offensive have not lost their jobs does not make it right. Period.

I think the tables would be turned and a lot of us would be feeling differently if caucasians were in the minority and african-americans or asians or hispanics were the leaders of our country and the 'dominant' race.

If WE felt oppressed and our leaders and/or people in positions of power who could reach an extremely large audience made comments about our race that were derogatory - I think we'd be singing a different tune.

Sharpton and Jackson are not theissue here.
