Vent- annoyance with the Imus fall out and college

Original post by nifheim

Okay today in class two professors were discussing the issue of Imus and said they feel it was wrong to have such a backlash in a 'kidden' comment even if it was in poor taste. THAT WAS IT and this student fires back not in class but via email to the entire class and both professors that they were disrespectful and he was hurt by the comments. He then goes into details about how he didn't care for the comment that you can go to any part of this college and hear comments far worse and serious then those made by imus. WHICH IS TRUE!!!!

I fired a email back to everyone saying I was insulted that he had to carry his message so publicly and he could of resolved the issue or started a debate in class (which has been done numerous times in var. classes) and nipped it that way. Express how you feel I am all down for that but don't try to get someone fired because you disagree with them. That I have heard far worse in my days of college and working whereas a college professor once called every guy in my classroom a slur to gay guys because I was in FIT and that girls couldn't compair to a 'gay' eye in fashion. I never complained. I never complained when a african (a prof. from africa) said he hated all white people due to his experiences in south africa. I said hell yea if i witnessed what you did then i would be along side you. Did I complain NO its called educated debate.

I am so enraged over this whole PC crap we have to deal with today and the media emphasizing the importance of keeping your nose clean. Say what you feel then if you don't like it say you hate it, shut off the show and move on. I think the war is more important then some old man making a bad tast joke especially when there are other radio and tv personalities making far worse of a comment then that.

I also stated in the email that this kid shouldn't show up for the senior art exhibit because he maybe offended by certain imagery that is involved. One classmate of mine is doing shock art and has photographs of the koran with a time bomb around it, images of dead babies wrapped in plastic and so forth. what now the entire school will be shut down because someone was hurt? GOD i hate sensative people.

Sorry i had to get that off me chest.

i can't agree or disagree because i don't know how it feels to be a different race. I wish I could maybe if we all could this stuff wouldn't exist.

Regardless of the double-standard issue - what he did was WRONG.

Just because Star and Buckwild and Stern and Isaiah Washington and others who have been offensive have not lost their jobs does not make it right. Period.

I think the tables would be turned and a lot of us would be feeling differently if caucasians were in the minority and african-americans or asians or hispanics were the leaders of our country and the 'dominant' race.

If WE felt oppressed and our leaders and/or people in positions of power who could reach an extremely large audience made comments about our race that were derogatory - I think we'd be singing a different tune.

Sharpton and Jackson are not theissue here.

Not saying its right but i think its kind of a joke how much news this is getting. Im sorry but as far as morals go, the media has no right to say anything because this has all been thrown out the window for a long time. I think the bigger issue is with music lyrics, television, magazines, etc. This influences the younger generation alot more than IMUS ever would, lets be serious most younger people had no clue who he was until this happened. But how is it ok that others can say or do what they want, and those that are able to reach a larger audience.

Nobody is saying he is right, but in todays society its kind of funny to punish him for everything thats going on...There are so many bigger issues...Our school system is a joke, the younger generation are out of control-you have 5th graders having sex in front of their whole classroom, you have kids killing eachother and bringing weapons to school and he is the bad influence.

I understand making an example of someone but why not make an example of someone alot more influential, more known to the younger generation. Its like ok lets get offended and be mad at IMUS and fire him...But then lets go turn around go out dancing to songs that disrespect women, watch a comedian making racial comments, and the list can go on and on.

I think what people are saying is ok he got what he deserved? then lets see justice all around.

I just saw this post on myspace and this is completely true and I HATE DOING THIS but it has to be done.

I have no issues to state Imus was wrong and did disrespect african americans and women but I have a issue that there is a major double standard in this country and its not just black and white it effects the double standard of what is acceptable to say and do and who gets 'punished'.

I want to state the fact that I am really feeling a bad backlash in communities comming with this. I realize in time it goes away and people go back to normal life but I am hearing people feeling pushed to keep their mouths shut in fear of being fired over taking sides in this subject. I am afraid that this seriously splitting this country apart when we need to be a union to be strong in order to get out of this mess of a war going on. We also need to analyze the fact that today people's lives are still in disarray in the south becaues of katrina and THAT is more important then some old fart saying a line to be 'edgy'.

And bringing it back to my point of posting this - WHY CAN'T PEOPLE DISCUSS things in a college with out being accused of being racist. I HATE THIS - today the department head had to send out email not appologizing but restated it was a open discussion. WHY WHY WHY??? I want to put my foot through the damn door at this point because i am tired of people having to apologize over a discusion or opinion.

Today Don Imus was fired for calling the Rutgers University basketball team 'nappy headed hos'. Sure, that was inappropriate, but did the punishment fit the crime? Maybe we should look at the two guys who pushed this issue until Imus was fired.

Jesse Jackson says it's a question of morality, and what's right and what's wrong.

Just so we're clear:

Imus Calling Black Women 'nappy headed hos': Wrong.

Jesse Jackson calling Jews 'Hymies' and referring to New York as 'Hymietown' : Right. (Washington Post, 1984)

Imus Calling Black Women 'nappy headed hos': Wrong.

Jesse Jackson having an affair and Impregnating Karin Stanford, then using rainbow coalition funds to pay her $40,000 and purchasing a $365,000 house to keep her quiet: Right

Jesse Jackson not paying child support for this child, and not visiting her: Right

Jesse Jackson Saying Duke La Crosse Rape Suspects who have been aquitted 'deserved the negative attention' because they weren't acting morally by hiring a stripper: Right

I'm glad we have someone with strong moral values like Jesse Jackson to make sure nobody makes racist jokes on radio stations!

Thanks for showing us what's right and what's wrong Jesse.

And who can forget Al Sharpton, another strong moral figure who knows the power of words:

After District Attorney Steven Pagones failed to prosecute white suspects for raping a black girl (because evidence showed the story was fabricated) Al Sharpton accused Pagones Himself of raping the girl. Pagones successfully sued him for Defamation. Right

But it gets better:

Imus Calling Black Women 'nappy headed hos': Wrong.

In 1995, Sharpton led a protest in Harlem against the plans of Freddy's Fashion Mart, a Jewish-owned clothing store, to expand into a black neighborhood. Sharpton told the protesters, 'We will not stand by and allow them to move this brother so that some white interloper can expand his business.' Three months later, an armed protester forcibly entered the store and burned it down, killing himself and seven others. Right

Thanks Jesse and Al for showing us what's right and wrong. I'm glad we can finally see the light now. I'm glad you guys stopped this guy, and all his charities for sick and homeless children, that will now dry up. Thanks guys!

THANK YOU! well done!

The point I was trying to make is that by picking out one 'bad apple' it will not stop the others from ruining the bunch. You cannot try to set an example with one person... completely out of the blue. Things like this happen everyday to every race. It should not be tolerated ever. But, people think it is ok for them to penalize one person for something that is very common. More then likely nothing more will come out of this and nothing will have changed. So, why be all proactive and demand action be taken towards Imus when it's acceptable for others to do it.

I am sure someone will come back and say 'I don't think it is ever acceptable' but, what do you do to change it? Do you write a letter to the CEO of every record label that produces an album with hate content? Do you write to the head of the TV stations demanding that certain phrases not be used? Everytime Jerry Springer has a show about KKK members... do you call the network and let them know that you do not think it is acceptable? Do you do anything about it? If you don't... then aren't you just accepting it and moving on just like everyone else? If we fail to take action everytime a racist voices their opinion.... 1 random man should not be fired for his bad choice of words.

yeah stern actually looked up to him, you can tell from the movie. Well Imus dissed him sorta so guess thats why stern always says bad things about him now bc he wont forget that lol.

does anyone even remember what shock jock means???

these things are expected from guys like this..

why does everyone care what a 65 yr old man really thinks..

but it really is just so silly that all this happens when you say something

a while back i almost got kicked off these boards for saying that the bahamas were gross..that is not offensive in anyway at all to anyone or any race..and everyone here jumped on me..and some people havent really treadted me the same since..

people are going to get offended no matter what..just build a thicker skin so you can get on with your own life

if i got mad everytime someone called me a wop or a greasy sicilian..i would always be sad..its not me..so whatever

I remember when that comment was made. Although I am not from the bahamas but from the islands I took offense to that statement. You may have had a bad experience there then state that but to say it is gross when people actually live there, grew up there and are proud of their island was not right. There is a major difference saying the Bahamas is gross as opposed to I had a horrible experience there.

Re: Vent- annoyance with the Imus fall out and college

I'm not really angry at the racial or gender related remarks Imus made as much as the backlash it has caused actually really depresses me.

No matter how wrong what he said was (and it was wrong) he still has the right to say it (or so I thought).....

Free speech is not the same thing as 'acceptable' speech nor will it ever be. And I feel that is exactly what our First Amendment is turning into....Freedom of 'Acceptable' and 'PC' Speech rather then Freedom of Speech PERIOD. The freedom to express yourself no matter who you are offending.

And I understand that the problem with this is people who spout 'bad' or 'un-PC' things maybe influencing the youth of the country but if these things (radio, tv) are more influencial then your parents and family I honestly have to wonder who the he ll is bringing up these children?? The TV? Imus? I was exposed to TONS of 'bad' things as a child and since I was brought up in a certain way I was able to recognize ignornace when I saw it. That wasn't a product of society it was my parents teaching me wrong from right. There will always be terrible things in the world and morons who say dumb things for shock value but it is the parents job to teach their children to differenciate (sp) wrong from right and weed out the negativity. It doesn't mean people shouldn't be allowed to be negative if they want to, but the beauty is....you have a choice as to whether or not you want to listen. If you have a problem with what is said, turn your back, turn off the tv or change the station.

This is a very short view of what I'm trying to say but remember it's only MY opinion ....

i think if we got rid of al sharpten al lot of this crap wouldnt get started.

He intentionally picks cases where he can make people believe that because the person was black, white people hurt them, killed them. or wronged them in some way.

We get rid of him, i think things would calm down

Al Sharpton has been called every name there is because he is standing for what is right.
You know what, I want Al Sharpton to be right there with me when my brother who fits the profile ' a black man in america' gets shots because he was trying to show his identification, or have a plunger down his rectum for being in neighborhood he's 'not' suppose to be in. I want al Sharpton to be right there with me and helping me and my family fight for justice. Like I said in my previous posts a lot of you would NEVER understands what the big deal is.

It's not about Al's and Jesse Jacksons private life, it's about a racist comment that was made. I am Glad he got fired, at least there is some hope for the future.

Honestly, this is just so ridiculous. I am not offended because they were not speaking to me directly. Just like Imus wasn't speaking to all black women. For all black women to feel offended is just absurd.

He was talking to me, my mother and the rest of the females in my family. I am offended, it might seem absurd to you. It is a big deal for me being that I am of a race that has been oppressed for so long.

'No black women seem to have a problem with that.'
There have been marches by women' rights activist against the lyrics in these rap songs. I have a problem with it, so now you know of a black woman who has a problem with the lyrics in these songs.

The sad thing is that more black men are killed by other black men than anybody else...Yes if somebody is wrongfully shot or something happens to them in a white neighborhood then people should stand up for that. The problem is not just about only white people cant say that or only black people cant say that. Isn't that separating everybody more, shouldn't it be about human rights...I respect anybody who stands up for something they believe in but he only jumps in when its racial and makes things even worse and i believe divides people...What about going into black neighborhoods and speaking to them about black on black violence, this is a big thing and should be addressed and is very important. Why not speak to young men, especially those in the public eye who disrespect women and only view them as sexual objects.

And look what al sharpton did, he demanded an apology for Imus. What about what he did to the duke players. Sharpton was wrong and those kids deserve an apology plain and simple, their lives were almost ruined, they were in the public eye for such a terrible thing, he says people should do whats right but he wont.

And yeah ok Imus got fired, now what? This has happened before, this happened not that long ago and things dont change. This just separates everyone even more, because it puts blacks against whites, it wasnt even about the fact that WOMEN got disrespected.

If he got fired then there are so many others who should then too, dont you think? Black people in the media dont say things about white people? Personally I dont like being called a cracker, i dont see it as a compliment, but at the same time that person does have the right to say what theyre saying. Unless theyre standing in an all white neighborhood yelling crackers then they are not going against the 1st amendment, the only time you cant say whatever you want it when it can cause clear and present danger, and a situation like i just mentioned can do that.
