I have been reading about votive placecards a bit on here. I am a bit puzzled whether to use votive candles or tealights in the votive candle holder.
I heard a few people talk about the heat being a concern.
Please advise....

Re: Votive Placecards
I recommend using Votives -- the votives are taller so the holder doesn't get as hot as with the tealights. Because since the tealights are shorter, the flame is right up against the glass and heating it up for much longer.
ETA - I tried both ways and the votives didn't get nearly as hot as the tealights. The part of the votive that's not yet melted stays cool, which give you a place to grasp the holder from.

Re: Votive Placecards
I heard that tea lights are better because they dont' get that hot but I spoke to someone that used them at there wedding and she told her reception hall to light them 10 minutes before cocktail hour ended so that they would last until the end of the reception. She said that nobody seemed to complain about them being hot so I would just have them lite at the last possible moment.
Hope that helps

I've been wondering the same and haven't purchased anything yet. I think I might do a test myself with both and see how long until they become too hot to handle. :)

Re: Votive Placecards
I am probably going to do these tablecards and I definitely recommend to votives. Not only the heat factor, but sometimes the halls don't listen and light them way in advance. Tea light candles only last 1-2 hours and votives last 4-5. If you want the candles to stay lit for the effect you would be much better off with the votives.

My biggest question is how does the vellum stick to the holder?

I was wondering the same thing. I think I am going to just order the votives, since I want the candles to last.

Re: Votive Placecards
I suggest tea lights b/c they are
a) cheaper b) will burn directly in the center of the glass votive, thus illuminating the name of your guest c) will require your hall to light them just before the reception so that they are still fairly cool when your gusts pick them up. d) create less wax inside the votive so its harder to spill the hot wax on a hand or lap.
You can buy long burning tealights if you are worried about them burning about but the ones I used were the regular kind and they burned for 4 + hours in my 'test'.

Re: Votive Placecards
For those of you girls who are still looking into doing these placecards, I was just doing some research.
FH and I have this geometric heart theme going (we are using it for invites, programs, menus and placecards) and the kit for the vellum only comes with one design, so......
I just found out that you can order vellum online for very cheap (like $.60 a sheet), print the placecards on your printer, cut them out and spray glue them to the candle holders. I know it may seem like a lot of work but if you are trying to go with a theme, it might just be worth the effort.

Double sided tape.

Re: Votive Placecards
I would NOT use votives, they are TOO high, and people will get burned, actually ask your hall because most wont even allow them as place cards and the ones that do, will not allow the votive candles in them, only tea lights.
