w4 married what to do?

We were married August 31, 2013. Trying to figure out what we should change our w4 to. My husband has full custody of his son who is 18 and a senior in high school. For our w4 I've had mine as single 0. Hubby had his as single but with 5 exemptions so he'd get more in his check but ended up doing at end of year. I've always gotten a nice refund every year and I don't wAnt us to owe come April. So my question is on my w4 with work do I chAnge mine from single 0 to married 0, 1or 2? And for my husband should he change his to married 0,1 or 2? We'd rather not owe at end of year and have enough tAken out of checks. he makes about 42000 and I make about 37000. Thanks

You don't have to change any exemptions on your w4. When you go to file taxes for this year, have your tax guy work up married filing jointly and married filing single and see what works best for you. Chances are if he usually owes and you usually get a refund, it will be a wash. You get different earned income credits, so it's best just to see how the numbers work out at tax time and go from there.

Oh...and if your husband changes his to married 2, when you go to file you should get a refund because you will most likely be claiming 3. So in a perfect world, too much $ will have been taken out and you will get a refund. That is why you claiming 0 always get a refund... It's the governments way of borrowing a little extra money through out. The year. I hope that helped a little
