ok so fh and i were totally blessed when a friend of ours gave us their timeshare in waikiki for our honeymoon...then we were talking with our friends and they said that waikiki is in like the city and its industrial...is this true? what is the beach like? i've been looking online and i found some awesome places to go to and it look amazing the city looks so fun and tropical...have any of you gone to waikiki and what did you think? and are any of you staying there?

Waikiki is sort of a like a cleaner less crowded NYC. I didn't get a chance to go to the beach when I was there (I was there for a conference) but it looked nice. I don't think I would describe it as industrial, but much more city-like and less relaxed tropical feel then some of the other Hawaiian islands.

I was in Waikiki over 10 years ago, so I don't know what it is like now, but I can't imagine it changed drastically. I loved it! It's like another poster said, it's like NYC, if NYC was clean and on a tropical island! I loved Waikiki beach. Honestly, you can't go wrong anywhere in Hawaii.

Compared to the other islands, Oahu and specifically Waikiki beach is the most 'city-ish.' That being said, it is still beautiful. The actual beach is really nice (it does get crowded though). Most people will tell you it isn't necessary but my advice to people going to Oahu is to rent a car (even if it's just for part of your stay). You can escape the 'city' and head up towards the north shore or the other side of Diamond Head for the day. Also, so many of the activities on Oahu are much cheaper if you don't depend on a tour bus to take you there (i.e., Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, Haunama Bay, etc.)

ITA- I was there in July and loved it. It was not industrial at all.

waikiki itself is city like....but i would say to check it out for shopping and stuff
oahu is beautiful though!!! rent a car and explore...i went 2 years ago and we rented a car and drove around the island, was one of my favorite days on vacation....they have a lot of surfing town and the beaches are beautiful!

We went to Hawaii for our HM and Oahu is definitely much more 'citified' than the other islands...but I still loved it We hiked up Diamond Head Mt and walked around the town and shopped We also went to Waikiki Beach and it was crowded but beautiful. Make sure to check out the International Market...great buys on stuff, esp shoes :) and jewlery!!! The other islands we went to were Maui and Kuaui, even more tropical and beautiful

your nuts! and its all my fault!!! im telling you ... look at Pastor Todd and Marys pictures ... ITS BEAUTIFUL!!! i think its amazing that your going to hawaii and you are going to have an amazing time. you will have time to hop and rent a car ... and it will be wonderful!!!
