Yeah, we got informed by the church that 'Here comes the bride' cannot be used, because of it's origin. I don't really understand, it's just a song. So anyway, what do people go down the isle to then? We also cannot use 'the wedding march' according to what we received.
(this is a luthern church, btw)

Apparently, the opera the song is from is bad.
Wagner's last opera, Lohengrin. Ironically, this work inspired both Adolf Hitler,s perverse theories and the formation of the modern state of Israel.
I know I have heard other processional songs, I think. But I don't know the names of any.

Re: Walking down the isle...what music is used?
The church sent us a whole letter about music and stuff. It came to my house, and it kinda cracked me up. They don't use 'Here Comes the Bride' b/c the composer, Richard Wagner was an atheist. It goes on to say that this song is from an opera that 'contains a rather graphic murder.'
The letter also asks, that if there is to be a soloist singing, that the songs should speak of God's love rather than a romantic love.
I mean I do understand its church and all, but hey this is a wedding!

Re: Walking down the isle...what music is used?
Im going through the same thing. I cant decipher what is allowed and what is not. No one at the church will give me a straight answer. The hymns that are sung every Sunday were not written by THE MAN HIMSELF. So who says what is a go, and what is not

This seems like it might be a nice for the beginning part. Maybe when I walk my mom down, if I decide to go that route which I'm not sure about. (my dad is alive, I just read it was a nice thing to do, undecided still)
I agree about choosing music. I mean, if you want to take the view point that people are inspired by god with the music they created, then why can't it be used?

I think it's because it is not 'religious'.
But not all Churches think that way. My church uses it.
But I'm not. I don't really like it (personally).
Canon in D is nice I can't think of others sorry

You can find it for less than $10 at ANY record store - it's public domain at this point. Just make sure that the composer listed is Pachelbel. It could be in the classical bargain bin, even.
I find it fascinating that a Wagner opera influenced the formation of the modern state of Israel, as Wagner was a notorious anti-semite. That's actually why we're not using the Wedding March for our processional. Where did you find that newsbite?
We're probably using 'Out of the Woods' by Nickel Creek. That is, if I can get FH to agree to it.

'Ave Maria', either instrumental or with a vocalist is always a nice choice (I prefer instrumental, personally).
