Warning for Moms and Moms-to-Be

Today's Oprah had some really great pieces of advice for Moms and Dads about keeping babies and children safe.

The most disturbing story that was told was about a 16 month old boy who was killed by baby oil! The parents thought they had properly baby-proofed the nursery, and the father let the child play in his room while he was cooking dinner. The little boy got into the bath supplies and when the dad went into check on him, the little boy was covered in baby oil! Apparently, he swallowed some and he also aspirated (breathed in) some of the oil. It coated the inside of his lungs and slowly (over 28 days) suffocated him. I was hysterically crying watching these parents tell their story. No book, no doctor, no baby prep class tells you that baby oil could kill your baby!

These parents went to Washington and lobbied successfully for Congress to pass a law that requires baby oil bottles to now have child-proof caps.

I think all those types of bottles should be child proof. I can't tell you how many times I had to take vaseline, shampoo, deodorant, hand cream & now sun tan lotion out of Patricks hands.

I saw that show when it first aired. It was horrible. There should be a warning on the label on all bottles. Honestly, it is a horrible tragedy that a simple label might have prevented!

Also- during this time of year water sources such as buckets to wash a car can be deadly to small children.

Be careful of baby powder as well.

This was such a sad episode. Im glad they re-ran it at this time of year. Especially the story about the teenager that died in the sand at the beach, and the kid that fell 11 feet from his window !

who would think ?????

I started to watch then I turned it off... Im paronoid enough without that. I watch my baby like a hawk. And to think I was thinking about getting a pool. WATER BABIES HERE WE COME!

Wow that is so very sad....

But like Michele I think a label would do. Kinda like the label on the hairdryers that say don't use in the bathtub. Obvious to me, but maybe someone out there needs to be told.

Personally, I wouldn't buy shampoo (or anything else) that is child proofed. I'd settle for a child lock on the cabinets.

My Aunt once brushed her teeth with Desitin, what are you gonna do? She was tired, a child proof cap just would have taken her longer.

Yes Tracy, I learned there when I was 9 months. My mom has a house on the water so it was necessary
