Was your proposal a surprise or did you plan the engagement?

Original post by EJSD2006

Just for fun...want to see what the census was on this topic. Mine was a little of both. We talked about it and he told me in summer of '04 that we would be engaged before the year was over. We never went ring shopping or anything but I definitely knew it was coming, just didn't know exactly when...

How about you girls?

I knew it would eventually happen...but he totally surpirsed me! He proposed the day of my college graduation...at dinner in front of my family and everyone in the restaurant! So Romantic! He even designed the ring himself! and it was exactly what i wanted!
Such a good man!

Re: Was your proposal a surprise or did you plan the engagement?

i knew we were going to get engaged and i knew he was, little by little, making payments on the ring (he made a total of four or five payments to the jeweler) but i wasn't aware when he was done. i didn't think he was going to be done with paying for it and ready to propose until a month or so after he actually did.

so i knew it was coming, we told our families that we wanted to get married and that he was saving for the ring months earlier and they both met but when he actually got down on one knee i was surprised-- i'm like i thought you were only on payment #3?!! LOL hahaha... he's like nope, all done and all paid off!!

We talked about it alot and even when ring shopping but I didn't know when he was going to propose. I also didn' pick me ring out. He took me shopping so that he could get idea of what I liked and didn't like.

We've talked about it for a couple of months but I thought he was planning to propose this spring. But he totally surprised me and proposed in the winter!

Re: Was your proposal a surprise or did you plan the engagement?

We had talked about it a lot and he had said at one point in 2004 that it would be by the end of 2005. He kept on telling me in early 2005 'not this year'. One night when we were out, last March, his friend (a girl) started grilling me about rings. I told him he's like I swear, I didn't put her up to that (but he had).

Then, in July, he insisted we take an overnight trip to the town at the Jersey shore where we met (after a long weekend trip the week before at another part of the Jersey shore with all of our friends). The hotel we wanted to stay at was closed and he spent all night trying to find another one in the area. It was a week before my 30th b-day and the 5 year anniversary of when we met.

I also had used his computer and saw he had recently visited a jewelry website in the city (I wasn't snooping, I was looking for the address for the site I wanted to go into).

Then I wasn't so sure, the night before we were going to the Yankee game so I wasn't sure, then he paid for parking (something he never does) and checked his trunk before we left to head home. Also, he said he wanted to ask my dad and well he invited my dad to a golf thing and my dad declined (that was another thing that made me think it was happening).

The big surprise though was that he arranged for my parents to meet that night and my mom new about it and didn't tell me. She knew that I was suspicious and managed to keep the secret (she's horrible at secret keeping).

It's funny, we were talking about this last night! I told him everything except the internet part (he doesn't know I saw he'd been on a jewelers website).

Total surprise! we had been together 5 1/2 years when he proposed and we spoke about it, but I didn't think it was coming yet. I though the earliest would be by the holidays, but he proposed in August!

He told me to look at rings and see which ones I liked...being the control freak I am....I called him 3 days later at work and said, come buy this one!! He did. heehee....he wanted me to LOVE whatever ring it was...but he also wanted to make the final call, but it was the only one that i had really been like, OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! over.

He didn't propose for a while afterwards cause they had to special order/custom make my ring (size 4.5) for me...but he did it on the beach!! really cute!!

Re: Was your proposal a surprise or did you plan the engagement?

Yes and no. He popped the question on April Fool's Day 2005 very very casually. As in 'by the way will you marry me?' I said yes, but a few hours later I asked him if he was serious since the proposal came without the ring. A few months later he said (out of nowhere) 'that's it, you need a ring NOW'. I introduced him to a jeweler friend, he went with my mom, and they found a stone. The setting was custom made. The day he paid it off, he was leaving me messages at work like: 'it's 10AM, I called Tony, he's in the store.' 'it's 11:45 AM, I'm leaving work to go see Tony' 'it's 11:50 AM, I'm in the parking lot leaving work' etc, until 'it's 12:30, I'm on my way back to work' I got him on the phone while he was in his car driving back and asked him if was coming to my office. Answer - NO. If I wanted my ring I had to go get it!! So I did. Of course he had to give me the whole empty box thing before he pulled it out of his pocket.

Re: Was your proposal a surprise or did you plan the engagement?

Well we talked about it for a really long time and the last convo was me saying I really wanted to be engaged before I turned 30....

A month before I turned 30 he asked if I still wanted the say ring in an email and I said yes.

Tried not to get my hopes up and honestly did not think it was happening for a while...

So on the morning of my 30th bday on the way to Cancun I was completely and utterly SHOCKED!

After 6 1/2 years we talked it to death but I wasn't expecting it to happen when it did. He came over on a normal Tuesday night for dinner and we ate. Then we started to play our usual board game Scrabble. When it was his turn he spelt out 'marry me' (the sneak had the letters in his pocket) and he got down on one knee! I was shocked. almost two months later and I can't stop staring at my ring still!

such a sweet story!

that is so nice!

I had no idea! We didn't even look at rings...although I had pulled a ton out of magazines and created a 'wedding book'.....Apparently he had been looking threw them...little bugger b/c on his 30th surprise birthday party I thought I was throwing him...he Got down on one knee and asked if I would be his wife & marry him......the Entire place was clapping and yelling 'what's your answer' and this was only, literally , a minute after the place yelled surprise!

It was half and half. We ahd gone ring shopping and had a timeline, but the propsal itself was a total surprise and it came way before the 'deadline'...although I sort of knew, since we were going to disney together, but I didn't want to get my hopes up!
