Was your proposal a surprise or did you plan the engagement?

Just for fun...want to see what the census was on this topic. Mine was a little of both. We talked about it and he told me in summer of '04 that we would be engaged before the year was over. We never went ring shopping or anything but I definitely knew it was coming, just didn't know exactly when...

How about you girls?

After 6 1/2 years we talked it to death but I wasn't expecting it to happen when it did. He came over on a normal Tuesday night for dinner and we ate. Then we started to play our usual board game Scrabble. When it was his turn he spelt out 'marry me' (the sneak had the letters in his pocket) and he got down on one knee! I was shocked. almost two months later and I can't stop staring at my ring still!

I was surprised! Total Shock...We had discussed it and we both agreed we wanted to get married to each other but he made me think it would not happen for awhile... in which I was ok with...

Then he popped the Q on Valentine's Day!

The funny thing is all our friends new about it for the last 6 months everyone kept quiet...Everyone was waiting for the BIG day...(the only one that did not now was my best friend because I think he knew she might let out some hints)

it's been 16 months we've been engaged and i STILL can't stop staring at my ring...i'm distracted by how sparkly it is ...i'm amused easily!

It is sparkly, huh? It looks the best in sunlight as my newly married best friend told me. I am easily distracted and amused as well. At least I know this feeling will last for awhile. Happy planning!

I knew it was gonna happen but not when it did. We have been together 12.5 years and he said by the endof the year (2005) it would happen. Well it wound up taking 4 months longer...but it was worth it, he proposed after singing kareoke at a bar and everyone important was there and most of them were as clueless as I was.

A total surprise. I knew we would get engaged soon, but didn't know when. He really went all out to make that the most special night of my life. In 4 days and 21 hours, he will be my HUSBAND!!

i knew it would happen in this lifetime, weve been together six years and living together for the past two but i was absolutely floored by the engagement -- which i love!

I had no idea. Had a i known i would have tried to look better. we were next a lake, i was wearing denim shorts and an old t-shirt. When he asked me I was so shocked I almost fell into the lake!!!!!!!!!!!

We discussed it right before Christmas in 03. He has a thing for numbers (especially square roots), and that January he told me there would be a perfect square involved., so I figured 2/4, 3/9, 4/16 (our anniversary), or 5/25. He kept teasing me that I would never figure it out. Well about halfway through February I realized that it was leap year and that he would probably pick Feb 29th since it is so rare. My mom convinced me that I was wrong (in fact the night before she told me to get off it, it wasn't happening on the 29th) Well boy was I surprised when he DID propose on the 29th!! So I knew it was coming but not exactly when. And the perfect square was my ring!! My princess cut diamond is perfectly square to a hundreth of a millimeter (a very rare thing)

My proposal was a surprise....However, I picked out my ring....He wanted me to get exactly what I wanted becuase I will have it for the rest of my life!!! Lucky Me!!!


Same here. I picked out the ring..... My BD came and went, Chanukka, xmas and I was like what the F---? (were're talking 4months) New Years Eve... were on our way home from a New Years Party and I was thinking to myself ..what the F---? Is he gonna make me wait till Valentines or after? Well, he took me by the Whitestone Bridge (he said he was hot and wanted to get some fresh air). It was beautiful.

Mine was a complete surprise. We never even looked at or talked about rings.... I knew the proposal would come eventually, but never thought it would happen on my 30th birthday last year! It was just the way I always wanted it!

Complete surprise!!! I knew that DH & I would get married but if anyone knew my DH, he kept telling me, he would not get married til he was 30 & not engaged til at least 25! Low & behold, we were engaged at 24 & married by 26!

We went ring shopping in March (I think it was more to shut me up) and I feel in love with a ring that FI said NO to. I dropped the subject...I knew we'd get engaged by the end of the year but figured it would be in November/December. Well he proposed in July (I was completely caught off guard) and gave me THE ring!!!!

Mine was a total surprise. We had been together just about 3 years and I suspected it would happen 'soon/eventually'...but I didnt expect it the day it happened.

It was a total surprise. Of course we talked about it and i kept asking when it would happen. But he kept saying when he was done with school, which would be next year. However, Christmas Eve we went to Wollman Rink, and engaged since then

We've been together almost 8 years (together since high school) so how much of a surprise could it have really been??

But i will say that when he propose, i wasn't really expecting it. I had some family health problems going on at the time and my mind was elsewhere... otherwise i'm sure i would have picked up on the clues more, especially since he stinks at being subtle!
