Was your proposal a surprise or did you plan the engagement?

Just for fun...want to see what the census was on this topic. Mine was a little of both. We talked about it and he told me in summer of '04 that we would be engaged before the year was over. We never went ring shopping or anything but I definitely knew it was coming, just didn't know exactly when...

How about you girls?

Same thing...we discussed it, but I thought it would happen later in the year. He definitely got me =)

After dating about 3 or 4 months, FH and I started looking at rings. I had no idea when it was really gonna happen but started to get a little neurotic when almost a full year passed since we looked the first time and still nothing happened. He told me that by 11/11/05 we would be engaged because we originally planned to get married 11/11/06 and he knew I wanted at least a year engagement. The closer it got the more anxious I became because I wanted it to be a surprise and days were running out. 11/11 came and went and nothing. I was so upset. He waited because he realized the only way he could surprise me was to wait until after 11/11. I didn't have to wait long - he popped the question on 11/12 and I was absolutely stunned! I have to give him credit...for all the talking about it, he managed to completely surprise me - something I didn't think he would be able to do. I love my FH!

By the way...we subsequently wound up having to change our date til 11/18 because our hall wasn't available on 11/11. So I still had my year.

I would be lieing if I said I had no clue it was going to happen. I thought it was going to happen around the holidays but when it didn't I thought maybe for Valentine's day. Instead he did it on our anniversary in January. I was sooo happy!!!

A little of both. I thought that the day he proposed he was trying to trick me. I thought that he WANTED me to think he was going to propose but that he was not going to. Does that make sense?

My proposal was a surprise....However, I picked out my ring....He wanted me to get exactly what I wanted becuase I will have it for the rest of my life!!! Lucky Me!!!

We had talked about marriage (and when we bought a house together, it was pretty much a done deal that we would get engaged), but it was a total surprise when it happened...I hadn't expected it (although I definitely hoped for it!) that soon.

We planned the engagement. FH wanted me to help him pick out the ring! But he still surprised me by throwing me off track about when he was going to propose. He told me his sister thought proposing on Valentine's Day was totally cheesy so he wasn't going to do that. But i really wanted Valentine's Day, so he took me to the top of Rockefeller Center and surprised me on V Day!

I knew it was coming, but didn't know when He managed to surprise me, after 4.5 years together :)

MIne totally surprised me. We had talked about our future, but I was clueless that he had picked out a ring and was planning to ask when he did.

Mine was a surprise. I thought it was going to happen when we went on vacation but he dd it a week before we left and really got me good. I was in shock.

Funny story! We weren't even dating when FH bought my ring... we were 'on a break' and I decided that in January I would be moving to Florida. He decided he couldn't let me do that, went out and bought the ring, and hid it in his basement from everyone until Christmas eve. Unfortunately, I sort of knew it was coming b/c I had found the receipt one day when I was cleaning up his room... It didn't say what it was for exactly, but I kind of knew.

The best part was, he went shopping and picked out the ring all by himself - and it was EXACTLY what I would have picked, had I gone shopping for it myself!

P.S. This was the first time we got engaged... second time story wasn't as good!

I knew we were getting engaged I just had no clue when.. and he did such an amzing job.. He said we were meeting his clients from france at the Gansoorvet (might be spelled wrong) in the meat packing district and he was like they want us to go up stairs for a drink. I was like are you kidding me... tell them to meet us donw here I dont want to go to there room.. so I went and when he opened the door there was roses after roses after roses and rose peddels all over the floor I almost died... and then i saw how nervous and excited he was and i was like THIS IS IT...

and we had dinner sent to the room... and desert... and spent the night.. and in the morning breakfast was sent up also. it was the best night of my life so far...

Mine was a complete surprise!!! He picked out the ring and set up his proposal without anyone knowing including our families. I was so excited and stunned at the same time!!!

I knew it was coming within a few months- BUT the proposal was a surprise..I had NO idea it would be that night and didnt know he bought the ring and asked my parents for my hand...which I thought was sweet

mine was half half, i was there when we picked it out. then the night before i graduated from dowling, he got me really mad saying he never baught it, returned it bc i was nasty, now he had asked my parents the week prior for my hand, and of course they said yes, then he got in the shower and came out and i was sooooooooo mad at him, he was on his knee and i had no idea what was going on, bc i was so mad!!! then i looked and was like omg!!! of course i said YES!!!!!!!!!!!! The graduation was great to show all of my friends my ring!!!

I knew it was going to happen because we had just set up dates for our parents to meet but it was for April of last year. I was completely thrown off guard when he proposed in February.
