Watermill

Original post by sruizaroo

Hi everyone! My fiancée and I got engaged on June 30, 2010 and we recently started looking at wedding venues. I want to get married at a venue with nice gardens, either on Long Island or in Westchester. I like the Swan Club, but it's out, b/c my really close cousin got married there last September, pllusss my fiancée married his first wife there. (I don't want or need any bad joo joo!) I really want to get married in June 2011.

We checked out the Westbury Manor last weekend, and I liked the grounds and the outdoor cocktail area, but I wasn't 100% sold on the rooms. Plus I don't like how so many weddings are going on at the same time.

Today we checked out the Watermill, Coindre Hall and the Woodlands. I loooveeeddd the Watermill. The grounds at Westbury Manor are much nicer, but I really love the rooms at the Watermill, esp. the Chapel room. (Oh, I should mention we're looking to have between 100 and 120 guests.) We met with Frank and he was super nice. I do wish it had more flowers, but I can live with it, esp. since the rooms are so nice. I do need to go back and try the food, though.

Coindre Hall . .. erm, let's just say it's not for me. Personally, I thought it was overpriced and could use a good cleaning and some renovating. But that's me.

The Woodlands was very nice, too, but I wasn't crazy (again) about the gardens and the fact that they have a restaurant and golfers outside that you can see during the cocktail hour.

We have appointments to check out the Bronx Botanical Gardens and Snug Harbor next weekend. Unfortunately, I don't think we're going to be able to swing a June wedding at the Bronx Botanical Gardens finance-wise. Snug Harbor is more doable monetarily, and would have the gardens I'm looking for, but I am afraid it will be hard for our guests to get to (mostly coming from Queens and the Bronx).

So I'm quite leaning towards the Watermill. Can people please tell me about their experiences there? Both as a guest and as a bride? Also, I am open to suggestions for venues with nice gardens, good food, and elegant decor a la Watermill. And I'd prefer a place that does only 1 or 2 weddings at a time. Oh, I should also say that my fiancée was unable to make the appointments today, so I have to go back with him to make sure he likes it, too! (Though I'm sure he'd love the Watermill.)

Thanks, ladies, in advance for your input. This is my first post as a bride. I joined this site last year when I was the MOH at my cousin's wedding and I'm so excited to be using this site as a bride now!

Re: Watermill

Sooo it looks like I'll be changing venues. Greg and I went to the Watermill on Tuesday. There was an event going on so we got to try the entrees that were being served at the event. They were brought to us by the General Manager in one of the cocktail rooms, which they had set us for up with place settings, etc. It was very nice of them to do that for us. We had the chateaubriand, tilapia oreganata and the chicken dish with asparagus. They were hot this time! haha. I didn't try the fish b/c I don't like fish but Greg said it was good. All the dishes came with string beans and carrots and roasted potatoes. Those were all good. The chicken was okay; I thought it lacked seasoning. It tasted better once I put salt and pepper on it. The chateaubriand was really bloody and I like my meat well done so I couldn't really taste it. I felt bad sending it back and asking for it well done. Greg liked the steak, though. I tasted the mushroom sauce it came with and that was tasty.

So while things were better than at the expo, I still wasn't totally convinced. I wasn't looking for the best meal of my life or anything- I know it's catering hall food- but I should at least like it, if not really like it.

So that was Tuesday.

Last night, Wednesday, we did a tasting at the Westbury in their restaurant. The maitre d' (sp?) and the wait staff were incredible. So very attentive. The drinks didnt stop flowing all night. They put my napkin on my lap, the whole nine yards. Anyways, they gave us sooo much food! 2 items from cocktail hour, a pasta, a sorbet to cleanse the palate, SIX entrees (2 each of the sea bass, chicken and filet mignon), and bananas foster for dessert with a huge fruit plate and cappucino.

The cocktail selections were a seafood salad with lobster, crab, langostino, etc. Again, I'm not into seafood so that was all Greg. He said it was awesome. I did try a miniscule bite of lobster and a tiny bite of crab. That was the first time I had lobster haha. It was too fishy for me but again, I am not a fish person. I can;t even eat tuna fish sandwiches hahhaa. The crab was better for me. The eggplant rollatini was OUT OF THIS WORLD. Delicious! The eggplant was sliced very thin and the sauce tasted homemade and the cheese, mmmm. Way better than Watermill's eggplant rollatini, for sure.

Then we had penne a la vodka which was delicious, too. I have to say the Watermill's pastas were very good so on that course they 'tied' hahah.

Then they brought out strawberry sorbet to cleanse the palate. It was very nice, light and refreshing. Oh I had forgotten to mention the bread they put out on the table... soooo good. It was hot, crusty, soft on the inside. Some had black olives in it, some had cranberries, and others were 'plain.'

OK, so now for the main courses. There was sea bass with tomato, mozzarella and basil. There was filet mignon with two sauces, a raspberry one and a red wine one. And then the chicken that was covered with an olive tapenade and like a bruschetta. It all came with steamed carrots and roasted potatoes. I took a tiny bit of the fish but again, I hate fish, soo I really didn't care for it. Greg loved it. The steak... holy crap. It was medium rare and again, I like my steak well done. I took tinnnyyy lil bits from the edges that were more cooked, but again, I definitely saw red and I was like OMG can I even eat this??! I had to psych myself up b/c I am so squeamish and I felt like what I was doing was so taboo... raw meat?!? what?!?! I mean I know it's not raw but that's how I think of it. Anyways, I doused it in sauce so I couldn't see the red. The raspberry sauce was good... different.interesting. The red wine sauce was divine. The steak... beautiful, delicious. Cooked well done I prolly woulda eaten a whole one hahaha. The chicken, omg, delicious! Awesome! The carrots and potatoes were very good, too.

So at this point I'm like where do I sign?!?!?! hahahah

Then the maitre d; makes us bananas foster right in front of us. OMG! DELICIOUS! that plus the fruit and cappucino soooo good!

So, to me, there is no comparison on the food btween the Watermill and the Westbury Manor. I don't want to offend anybody out there but I'm just giving my honest opinion. It's my preference. I prefer the look of the Watermill and the rooms, and OMG that GORGEOUS indoor chapel but food was more important to me than the rooms so we're gonna switch to Westbury. I am going to square that away today hopefully. As of a few days ago Father's Day 2011 was still available so the wedding date would be the same, if we can get it. Fingers crossed!

I'm sad we won't be married in that gorgeous indoor chapel at the Watermill but the food at Westbury will be amazing and the grounds outside are gorgeous for pics. (If it doesn't rain, god willing!)

I'll let you know what happens later today when we speak to Felicia about booking. I'm so excited I got up at 5:30 AM today when it's my day off!!! Craziness!
