Forgive me for venting. I'm stressed out about money. Could use a place to vent and deal with my concerns. To have a wedding, to elope, to get a marriage license at town hall and have a ceremony/reception at a better time - and if so accept that it may not happen.
I've been living with FH for over 2 years now, our families do the holidays together, we live our lives like a married couple and are very much in love. I have a beautiful e-ring from the days when money wasn't much of an issue. Now things are different. FH was laid off from a job for 7 months, found a new job for painfully less than he was making, but with good opportunity for him to get into management - which now he is working toward getting and they will pick first picks in June. I left an intolerable job back in January, was recently denied unemployment and will begin a waitressing job after May 17 - I'm taking a Real Estate class, and the restaurant wants to start my training when my schedule will allow for me to be consistent. So I have things lined up, but I'm not sure how it will work out and how fast the cash will come in. So money's tight. I'm just getting by paying my bills now thanks to my tax refund, but when that runs out waitressing better pay off.
We bought a house 2 years ago and as much as it has been great and has even produced some equity - it's also produced some financial burdens - obviously a mortgage, but also a pipe breaks here, a fridge needs to be replaced there, etc. My bathrooms falling apart and I want a new kitchen like there's no tomorrow, we need a new roof, we killed our front lawn, etc. I know this is the pains of home ownership, but it's hard when you are also wanting a wedding as well. It was decided that FH will probably not pay anything toward the wedding b/c he needs to pay our mortgage, which I cannot afford to contribute to.
Okay, so that's the money part of my issues. With that, I also add... I have a very small family. In NY I have a mom, a dad, a sister, 1 cousin (and her husband), 1 uncle. I have cousins down in FL, but they never come up to NY and I wouldn't be surprised if they were unable to come up for the wedding anyway. My FL cousin has her hands very full with a newborn and she doesn't really have anyone to watch her VERY young kids for her while she's at a wedding in NY - we weren't going to invite kids outside the wedding party and her's would be too young anyway. I don't even feel like my parents care anymore anyway. They are contributing a little bit to the cost, but it's still going to cost me some cash. The wedding band I want alone will cost about $5k! But it goes nice with my e-ring which is crazy fancy - get a plain band anyway????
As for friends... I have one good friend... my best friend that's it! I moved around a lot in my 20's - like to other states... and made friends, lost friends, failed to stay in touch with people, etc. My best friend/MOH should we have the whole wedding thing is about to have her first baby at the end of May. If I were to elope on an island somewhere - I would definitely want her and her hubby there since they have always been so uplifting to FH and I even when the cards were down. I'm thrilled that they are having a baby, but also know that this will change our relationship and that the thought of them joining us for our elopement would be impossible - doubt they would leave a baby or even a 1 year old if it were next year as planned for friends who are eloping far away.
Another acquaintance who got married recently told me that if she were to do it all again she would not have waisted the money on the wedding, it was crazy expensive and she was short changed big time by some of her guests when it came to recouping via gifts. She's in her 40's so I feel like she's a bit wiser than I in this kind of thing. She totally encouraged me to think about going away and getting married. FH is open to all ideas, but the concept of spending any money right now stresses him out. It made talk of a happy occassion - not so happy. So I stopped talking about it so much and now when it does come up - he's not so unhappy.
So what to do? It's not like I have a ton of friends and family who are so excited to see me walk down an aisle. FH has more friends and family than I do - do I wait another year or 2 to save the money up just to walk down an aisle to a bunch of people I couldn't care less about looking upon me? Or do I just keep it something special and sacred between FH and I and make it romantic as possible on a beach in the Bahamas - just the 2 of us? Is it really any cheaper to get married in the Bahamas if my p's are contributing a little anyway? Plus, FH has a son from a previous marriage who I am blessed in that he LOVES me and LOVES the idea of us getting married. It may break his heart not to be involved in the wedding b/c we eloped. I'm lucky enough to have a step child who likes me - I know that is not always the case in a lot of families. Then again, I hate to say it, probably child support is another reason we don't have money - so do we continue to put a wedding on hold over money?
The problem is that after living together for so long I want the respect of his family as being part of his family and I want the same from my family toward FH. I feel like that is lacking horribly. It's like we are still only a 'possiblity' rather than a reality. I also 'play' step mother to Fh's child - willingly - but still I'm not really his step mother b/c I'm not really FH's wife. I just don't feel respected by his family and I don't feel my famiy respects FH the way I feel they all will toward us once we are married - that's why in some ways I just opt for a license ASAP and then if/when things aren't as tight financially we'd have a wedding. I just have a feeling - there'd never really be enough money for it so it would never happen. Could I live with never having a wedding? Does this even matter to a woman in her early 30's already who wants to have kids before 35 y.o.? What's more important when you are struggling with money. A wedding will only be another set back in the cash area of our lives. Any thoughts?

Re: Waying all the options (long)
I've thought about the small thing too, but I know that my FFIL has told me he wants to invite half the world to our wedding. FH's older brother had a very small wedding and I think FFIL felt he couldn't have the kind of thing he wanted - then again he's not paying! I think FH may have a hard time 'cutting' his list. I think that's also the stress. I think he feels he'd be hurting people if he didn't invite them so I think to him eloping solves that problem. I also know that FH's ex wife's family threw a huge wedding for them and as he says he was 'stupid enough to show up'. That marriage lasted 8 months - so I think he doesn't really see a big party as having any bearing on the success on a marriage - which of course we all know one has nothing to do with the other. Also, if we elope it will just be the 2 of us - no friends or family. I wish my parent's cared about our wedding. The relationship is a bit strained for some reason, but I think my mom's having some problems. I spoke to her last night and she was on a different planet - she had a stroke a few years ago and gets occassional siezures - she had a siezure the other day. Makes me feel even more that a wedding is pointless. Even my own mother who would be there, may not really 'be there'. I know my parent's won't fly anywhere and as I mentioned, my MOH is having a baby - so she probably won't travel for a few years.
Recently I entertained the idea of having the wedding up in the Berkshire Mountains (Kent, CT) where FH and I met. I thought it may be romantic to have the wedding in a beautiful mountain/lake scenery as well as where we first met. Shouldn't be too costly either. And CT isn't that far, but it would still be a weekend trip. There are cabins (with electric and bathrooms - not like 'roughing it' or anything) for guests to stay and lots of activities. FH thought this was a nice idea.

The mountain Idea seems really nice. It might also weed out some of the people who really don't need to be there. Some people who would come to a LI wedding may not travel to Ct.

You mentioned that you think getting married will gain you the respect of FH's family. I can tell you firsthand that this may not be the case. My FMIL was treated horribly by her FILs, to the point where they could only get married at town hall because the FILS refused to go to a wedding, and her FH couldn't have a wedding without his parents. He didn't feel it was right. So my FMIL feels robbed of a wedding, even now. And you know what? She still gets treated badly by her inlaws who are now elderly and depend on her. I know that you want to get married and you feel like you and your FH are already married. So now it is just whether you'll regret not having the big wedding. If really want it, then wait a bit til you can afford it. If you don't really care for that, then you can do something small but meaningful. But, DO NOT let your FILs make the decision for you. Don't let them rush you into anything you may regret for the hope of gaining their respect.

If you book a small room with a firm maximum, you can't invite half the world and you have a solid reason for saying no.

Honestly, you don't need to put anymore financial strain on yourselves. If you really want a wedding, why not postpone your engagement till you are financially secure? Or have a destination wedding where everyone pays there own way, I dont think it would be that expensive to host a dinner celebration.
Or did you try looking into a VFW or KOC hall, I am sure you could keep the price way down if you went that route. This way you could still celebrate with your family.
Either way, I wouldn't go into debt over it, in the end you won't be happy you did.
Good lucK!

Why don't you look into getting married in the Dominican Republic. It's pretty inexpensive and people would be welcome to bring their children. The wedding itself would cost very little, if anything (based on how many guests you have.)

Do it as a secret. Get married by the justice of the peace and invite everyone out to dinner to celebrate afterwards. Screw what other people think. If you FFIL wants to have a billion people at your wedding, then he should pay for a wedding for you and your FH. Will FH's family really look at you any different if you were married or if you had a huge wedding? Because there definitely is a difference and it is much cheaper to get married. I think by the way you described how tight money is, youve already answered your own questions. Save the money and down the line throw yourselves a big party.

I have not read everyone else's responses, but I will add my two cents. Why not get married by a justice of the peace or in Vegas with maybe your parents, then have a small reception at your home or your parents' home or at a nice restaurant. Invite only those closest to you? I know a few people who have done this and they were in similar situations as yours. This fulfilled their desires to have a wedding and their families desires to SEE them have a wedding. Don't know if this is an option.

Re: Waying all the options (long)
My best friend who lives in NY doesn't want a wedding. She is going to City Hall, going on a HM and then having a party for all her friends and family when she gets back. You could do something similar. Simply get married at City Hall (or a church) and then just have a party or something. If you were to rent out a VFW hall or something and have mom or someone help with cooking or order in it would not be that bad $ wise and could still be a very nice wedding.

Why not take a cruise it could even be a short 3 day one - your close friends could be invited to attend with the understanding that they would pay their own way as would everyone else. You and DF would prob have to spend about 1000 on tickets. Get something to wear - J Crew sells wedding dresses for $150. You can get married by the ship's captain and then bring over the license to city hall where you will have to get a state marriage license. You could prob do everything and a get simple wedding band for a few thousand dollars. Lisa

Re: Waying all the options (long)
Wow, I wasn't expecting so many positive responses. Thank you all so much.
On a good note - I got a job - it's a p/t waitressing job, but the money's good and it's not a shaby job - I get bene's and everything! This in addition to taking my real estate class next week and a little luck for the first time in my life and maybe, just maybe all will go well.
On another good note, I know who will do my photography if I do a local ceremony - big or city hall style - one of my kids that I coach in gymnastics (actually, I have at one time or another coached all 3 of the kids in this family) - her mom is a photographer with a newer business. She showed me some pics last night when I was at her house for her daughters b-day party of a wedding of one of her friends and the wedding was at City hall and the pics were really, really great! As soon as I make up my mind as to what I will do with my wedding situation and after I okay it with her, I will post her company's name so that she can get some ad time on here. She's the nicest person in the world too - I trust her entirely and she's talented.
