It is a hard subject,, because I hate this man for what he did to my family,, but I feel like he doesnt deserve my guilt for wanting him dead.
Before this happened I was on the fence. Now I believe for these pre-meditated,, or deliberate crimes then yes, why keep them in jail

Re: We haven't had a controversial discussion in a while...
I am almost scared to say how i feel b/c i dont want 'drama' This is my opinion and everyone is entitled to their opinion.... please do not judge!
I feel that the death penalty is almost like an easy way out. This person could have caused such suffering when murders were committed, and yet, they die by a simple injection... they do not feel a thing. Yes, the thought that you know when u are going to die is a form of suffering, but i just feel like they get off easy.
On the other hand, why should my tax dollars pay for this person to get a roof over his head, food in his stomach, and other amenities...
So, moral of the story is, i do believe in capital punishment...

It's actually more expensive to execute someone than it is to keep them in jail for 65 years.

I've never lost a family member to crime, so I can't even begin to imagine how horrible that would feel, and I'm very, very sorry for anyone who has.
My stance simply comes from the fact that if murder is wrong, murder is wrong - and capital punishment is a culturally acceptable form of murder. I can empathize with how other people feel, but I just don't think we as human beings are supposed to take another human being's death into our own hands...regardless of the crime that was committed.
JMO, though - and everyone has a right to theirs!
i think it is definitely hard to try and feel how you would feel at that time and situation (ie family member being killed). And I hope no one here ever has to feel that. And to those who have .
And althought I see your point and reasoning, I mean I may not agree with it all. But your reason is very truthful and strong!!! I just know it would be hard for me to say okay keep the guy in jail even though he killed someone in a horrible way. but I give you more repsect than i give myself for being able to say he should stay in jail because we should do an eye for an eye.

I think what we have to remember here is that people do not get the death penalty for minor reasons. It's not even everytime someone murders someone. There are specific things that the crime had to have in order for death penalty to even be put on the table. We are not talking about an ordinary crime here. Not that ANY murder should be looked at lightly, but people who say they are against it has to understand what a 1st degree murder really entails. These people are monsters. We don't send little grandma's who accidentally ran someone over to the chair. Although the only agrument I can see is making sure it is the right person. Other then that - it's these people that like to 'play God' and they don't seem to care very much about taking lives. I don't have any sympathy for them. JMO

I agree it is a bit of an easy way out. A lot of people never ever feel sorry for what crimes they commited,, some of them actually feel like they are RIGHT for what they did. I understand what you are saying

I say we take the ppl on death row and force them to be a part of a humiliating reality show of some sort.

I'm against it! Like a lot of people said though...if it were someone in my family who was killed I would want to murder that person myself! But I really do think that letting someone sit in jail for the rest of their life would be worse punishment. They would WANT to die!

Re: We haven't had a controversial discussion in a while...
I am in favor of the death penalty but only in extreme cases. I can definitely see both sides given things like the Innocence Project, etc. Usually there are ~ 10 years of appeals before anything happens, so hopefully the convicts would get due process.
I guess I just feel that for the more extreme & outrageous cases like serial killers, very brutal crimes done with no remorse, society is better off without these people and I agree that the money would be better off housing and feeding the homeless than this scum.
As for the 'killing is wrong so it's always wrong' I can see your point, but as long as there is war we are endorsing the killing of far more innocent people. If that is 'for the greater good' then so is this...

You would be surprised how much an execution really costs.
For further info on this subject, try this website
FYI - common execution sites on LI were Riverhead, Jericho, Smithtown, Jamaica

I think no matter what it is a very controversial topic, and it bring up strong feelings in most people. Honestly - I give all of us 'props' that we can have a rational discussion and see each other's points of view!

Re: We haven't had a controversial discussion in a while...
i think we should have it like this:
you touch a child the wrong way- molest/rape etc. you deserve to have your pecker cut off...that is punishment enough...plus jail time
if you murder someone by shooting them- you deserve to die by a gun just as you did- no little injection.
sorry i know it is harsh but why should someone suffer sooo much and then they just get an 'easy way out' as finallyengaged said.
sorry please dont bash me for saying this. just how i feel. i really am not a mean person

Unless,, jail is better than the life they were leading,, homeless and broke.
as in the case of the man who took my aunts life
