It's actually more expensive to execute someone than it is to keep them in jail for 65 years.

really? hurm a bullet is 2 cents . just saying.

come on down any NYC criminal court building and sit in on a pedophile trial , or work with rapists , murderers who have no remorse for what they did and will do it again , it will change your perspective a little
Its not a matter of playing g-d IMO its a matter of protecting our fellow humans from predators in the end. And I am ok with that.

I think what we have to remember here is that people do not get the death penalty for minor reasons. It's not even everytime someone murders someone. There are specific things that the crime had to have in order for death penalty to even be put on the table. We are not talking about an ordinary crime here. Not that ANY murder should be looked at lightly, but people who say they are against it has to understand what a 1st degree murder really entails. These people are monsters. We don't send little grandma's who accidentally ran someone over to the chair. Although the only agrument I can see is making sure it is the right person. Other then that - it's these people that like to 'play God' and they don't seem to care very much about taking lives. I don't have any sympathy for them. JMO

I appreciate that post. It was very well stated
Thank you.

Thank you.

i wonder how the families of the people on death row feel - imagine that was your son or daughter about to get killed? i wonder how those families deal with it all....any one of us could have a messed up kid can't we? i just always wonder how they feel because their lives must be crushed as well

ETS: even families of criminals who arent on death row - imagine how hard it must be to deal with if your loved one commited such a horrible crime?

i think we should have it like this:

you touch a child the wrong way- molest/rape etc. you deserve to have your pecker cut off...that is punishment enough...plus jail time

if you murder someone by shooting them- you deserve to die by a gun just as you did- no little injection.

sorry i know it is harsh but why should someone suffer sooo much and then they just get an 'easy way out' as finallyengaged said.

sorry please dont bash me for saying this. just how i feel. i really am not a mean person

That is how I do feel as well.... thank you for putting in examples.... that is the exact point i was trying to make when i said 'easy way out'

I'm against it! Like a lot of people said though...if it were someone in my family who was killed I would want to murder that person myself! But I really do think that letting someone sit in jail for the rest of their life would be worse punishment. They would WANT to die!

Unless,, jail is better than the life they were leading,, homeless and broke.

as in the case of the man who took my aunts life

I agree... often times, we are giving a murderer a place to live and food in their mouth... although it is not a desirable place to live and food to eat, it may be better than their previous situation

Maybe, But not as crushed as the mother that had to watch their child be carried out in pieces. Or not as crushed as the husband that has to hear about how his wife was tortured for days before she finally died of shock. Those are the family members I care about.

I've never lost a family member to crime, so I can't even begin to imagine how horrible that would feel, and I'm very, very sorry for anyone who has.

My stance simply comes from the fact that if murder is wrong, murder is wrong - and capital punishment is a culturally acceptable form of murder. I can empathize with how other people feel, but I just don't think we as human beings are supposed to take another human being's death into our own hands...regardless of the crime that was committed.

JMO, though - and everyone has a right to theirs!

i think it is definitely hard to try and feel how you would feel at that time and situation (ie family member being killed). And I hope no one here ever has to feel that. And to those who have .

And althought I see your point and reasoning, I mean I may not agree with it all. But your reason is very truthful and strong!!! I just know it would be hard for me to say okay keep the guy in jail even though he killed someone in a horrible way. but I give you more repsect than i give myself for being able to say he should stay in jail because we should do an eye for an eye.

I think no matter what it is a very controversial topic, and it bring up strong feelings in most people. Honestly - I give all of us 'props' that we can have a rational discussion and see each other's points of view!

that is very true.... right back at ya!!!

Here is my thought.

I'm slightly torn, but I'm more for it than against it. I think that if a person feels they have the right to murder someone at random, they deserve to have their life taken by the court. HOWEVER, I feel that the decision to handout the death penalty should be unanimous. Not 4 jurors say no and 5 say yes... There should be NO DOUBT that the person being tried committed that crime and that the death penalty 'justifies' the action.

As for the families of the criminals.. I feel bad for them. But truly I am not as concerned for them as for the victims.

Criminal trails are unanimous verdicts. all by unreasonable doubt. So, that's really not the issue

Oh I completely agree with you on this. There should be NO DOUBT that the person committed the crime like you said.

Which I think is totally normal. I mean - of course the family of the criminal is in a state of pain that is unimaginable, but society's first concern should be the victim and their family.

amen.

Right now, none of us would know how we would feel if we found out our child intentionally murdered someone. I'd like to think that we would stand behind our children or loved ones no matter what, but we don't know how we would react unless we are in postion (and hopefully we never will be). I know that I love my mother more than anything, but if I found out she was a serial killer, i'd be a bit disturbed and I honestly don't know how I would feel...

so every single juror has to agree that the person is guilty? you don't think that jurors are sometimes persuaded into a different verdict if they are the minority vote?

in my opinion- yes i would feel bad for the mothers/fathers/family of those who are on death row. but i have to remember they are there for a reason and a very horrible reason. and although i would love my child no matter what, i can still be disappointed or sickened by what they did. and if my son or daughter ever killed someone i would think they deserve their punishment. i would be sad yes that they would die but i would feel awful for the life that family needs to lead without their family member (who my son/daughter) killed. I would hope that i raised my children to be better people and therefore i would be very disgusted by wha they did.

and well that is my two cents on that. but honestly i am never really thinking about the parents of those who are the murderers it is the family who suffered that deserves my prayers and thoughts!!
