Re: We haven't had a controversial discussion in a while...
This is one of those things i am not completely one sided about how I feel. Personally i think its better to let them rot in jail, i mean those in death row have to be put on suicide watch and for many its worse to live the rest of their live in jail. Killing is wrong no matter what, but i am also not one of those ppl who is strongly against it.

I am for it. However, I feel that the victims' families should have a say in wether the person who took their loved one away should be executed or sentenced to life in prison. As we can see, we are pretty even split on this subject. I know that if one of my family members was killed I would want the criminal to be executed. I don't think it is necessarily 'justice for the victim' when the family members are morally opposed to the punishment.

I'm against it! Like a lot of people said though...if it were someone in my family who was killed I would want to murder that person myself! But I really do think that letting someone sit in jail for the rest of their life would be worse punishment. They would WANT to die!
Unless,, jail is better than the life they were leading,, homeless and broke.
as in the case of the man who took my aunts life
Aw I'm sorry. That must have been hard and that's why I'm kinda torn. Like I said...if it were my family I know I would want them gone!

Here is my thought.
I'm slightly torn, but I'm more for it than against it. I think that if a person feels they have the right to murder someone at random, they deserve to have their life taken by the court. HOWEVER, I feel that the decision to handout the death penalty should be unanimous. Not 4 jurors say no and 5 say yes... There should be NO DOUBT that the person being tried committed that crime and that the death penalty 'justifies' the action.
Criminal trails are unanimous verdicts. all by unreasonable doubt. So, that's really not the issue
so every single juror has to agree that the person is guilty? you don't think that jurors are sometimes persuaded into a different verdict if they are the minority vote?
This probably happens alot unfortunately, ESPECIALLY with cases that go on for such a long time. I mean some people have to be away from their families for a while and I think if there is one person who does feel differently, many times that person might get persuaded by the others or they might just go with what everyone else feels so it doesn't drag out more

While I have always been 'for it', I am currently against it until the courts, police forces and investigative teams get their shlt together.
There are WAY too many people on death row or in prison in general that are completely innocent.
I'm all for 'an eye for an eye' but what good is it when it's the wrong 'eye' simply because of prejudices or lazy detectives that would prefer to go with the first person(s) they interrogate just to close the case.

yes, every single juror has to have a guilty verdict.
ok. I understand that. Do you think that all of the jurors are always in agreeance, or do you think that sometimes jurors are persuaded into a verdict? this is just a personal question... and you don't have to answer if you don't want to

As for the families of the criminals.. I feel bad for them. But truly I am not as concerned for them as for the victims.
Which I think is totally normal. I mean - of course the family of the criminal is in a state of pain that is unimaginable, but society's first concern should be the victim and their family.
i agree - but just imagine you are the mother of that person - knowing you gave birth to them and that you created that monster - knowing that the person you loved with all your heart could do such horrible things - i mean that has to really mess someone up - and then do you stand by them? or forget them? as a parent you must be torn - do you still love them because they are your child? how do you just let them go - imagine you were the mother of a serial killer - how do you live with that? its just something that isnt really discussd or thought about thats why i brought it up...
but anywho - i dont know exactly how i feel about captial punishment....sometimes i think a life sentence is worse on the mind - being forced to live in jail, no choice, no freedom, treated like an animal, no visitors, no real life

I definitely think that happens alot, which is terrible. It is such an important decision, you are literally holding someone's life in your hands.

I also think that, unfortunately, becoming a serial killer may have absolutely NOTHING to do with the parents or how the child was raised. I truly believe that a child molester/serial killer/rapist/etc. has something actually chemically wrong in their brain that they are unable to stop themself from doing something this is so obviously and clearly wrong to the rest of society...

someone with a life sentence is basically waiting in jail to die - but they are probably going to wait a really really long time, longer than the guy on death row - sometimes i think that punishment is worse

after the verdict is read the judge polls the jury and asks again if they are sure that this is their verdict. If someone even hesitates - the judge can dismiss the verdict. Or they can say they can't agree and have a hung jury. If people felt strongly enough, there is other ways to go about it.

I wonder how the families of the people on death row feel - imagine that was your son or daughter about to get killed? i wonder how those families deal with it all....any one of us could have a messed up kid can't we? i just always wonder how they feel because their lives must be crushed as well
ETS: even families of criminals who arent on death row - imagine how hard it must be to deal with if your loved one commited such a horrible crime?
I think about this as well, however I have very strong opinions and theories on how and why humans end up committing atrocities. I feel that if parents were more in tune and more involved in their children's lives, they will be able to pick up on abnormal behaviors and commit to getting their child help. Humans make wrong choices because somewhere in their lives, it was allowed. There's too much tolerance and everybody is too busy (read: afraid) to get involved.
Anywho sorry to digress....I do not believe that capital punishment is an answer.

i dont know maybe it is just me....
but i get what people say that living in jail for life is much worse at times. But I feel those who really deserve the death penalty i.e. killed a child, raped and killed, cold blood murdered someone, and more henious crimes, I don't think they are all that sorry they did what they did.
Look at Ted Bundy or Charles Manson-- they weren't men who were sorry for what they did, And therefore sitting in jail was nothing. I mean Ted Bundy was married while in jail he got love letters from women etc. It's crazy.

as I said in an earlier post. If a person thinks that they have the right to go around murdering people, they deserve the higest form of punishment... whether that is my mother, my friend or my FH. If the police called me and told me they just caught my mother killing someone and she is a serial killer, she'd deserve the punishment. That doesn't mean that I don't love my mother, it just means that justice should be served. My mother took the life of someone who had a family and they must live with that forever.... If someone killed my mother, i'd wish the same punishment for them.
Again, I'mnot a cold hearted person, but i do believe in justice.
NOTE: my mom is not a serial killer, it's just an example. lol

I think what we have to remember here is that people do not get the death penalty for minor reasons. It's not even everytime someone murders someone. There are specific things that the crime had to have in order for death penalty to even be put on the table. We are not talking about an ordinary crime here. Not that ANY murder should be looked at lightly, but people who say they are against it has to understand what a 1st degree murder really entails. These people are monsters. We don't send little grandma's who accidentally ran someone over to the chair. Although the only agrument I can see is making sure it is the right person. Other then that - it's these people that like to 'play God' and they don't seem to care very much about taking lives. I don't have any sympathy for them. JMO
Very well said.

Yes i understand but many might not hesitate. Or sometimes the others can persuade the person. I am sure many times they dismiss the verdict because of this but probably quite a few times where it doesn't happen
