FI and i went to fortunoff to look at bands for him. The woman that worked there told me that we should not even consider a white gold band for him ($150) because it will turn yellow and that we should do platinum ($1650). I don't care and would just as soon do platinum but I went out with a couple last night and they said that FI should get White gold, that their jeweler recommended it and that we are being taken by opting for the white gold. They said white gold is def better for a guy cause it wont get dinged and scratched because it is a stronger metal. Any advice????

Platinum is a 'weaker' metal than gold and it will get dinged and scratched more easily.
Have you considered titanium?

Platinum is the stonger metal but scratches easier. White gold is looks more polished but over time turns yellow so it needs a lot more TLC and you can get it dipped again when is needs it. hard choice and FH and I are going through this now. I want my platinum ering to match but money is tight so we are looking for white gold for both of us. What to do???

Re: Wedding Bands, Platinum or White Gold?
I haven't heard much about titanium. But I am just starting to wonder whether it is a mistake to get him a $1,000 more expensive wedding band when it is unnecessary and impractical. He is a guy, as long as it is plain he doesn't really care. It is not like he has to wear platinum. I just dont want to spend so much when i really shouldn't be.

Re: Wedding Bands, Platinum or White Gold?
Both of my rings are platinum but DH's wedding band is white gold because white gold isn't as easy to scratch, and my husband isn't me...he's not 'careful' or anal like me about scratching the ring....LOL...so we went with white gold. We will probably get it dipped or cleaned up next year. He just has a plain, classic band.

Re: Wedding Bands, Platinum or White Gold?
If you're band is white gold, it may be best to stick with white gold. The two different metals rubbing against each other may not be the best for both rings...That and the color of platinum and white gold isn't exactly the same...Plus over time, they will wear down differently (meaning plat will scratch more and the white gold will change color, as mentioned in the previous posts).

Re: Wedding Bands, Platinum or White Gold?
we both have white gold and DH turned gold a little but only because he had his dipped, mine is fine. I also just bought him a second white gold band for work and the women told me to get 10k instead of 14k because it is stronger.

Re: Wedding Bands, Platinum or White Gold?
white gold doesn't turn yellow. the yellow color can hint through but it won't 'turn' yellow.
platinum is much softer than white gold so it scratches and dents more easily.
get white gold. the price difference is huge--of course she wants you to buy platinum because you'll be spending 10 times the price!!!

platinum prices are ridiculous right now... do white gold, you could always do platinum later on when the prices settle

Re: Wedding Bands, Platinum or White Gold?
I have a platinum e-ring and we knew werent going to have the money for an eternity band for quite some time so we opted for plain metal bands. More metal shows in that case and since we have a connection in the city, we were BOTH able to get platinum bands at a very reasonable price. One of my BM's just showed me how yellow her white gold band and e-ring gets over time. She said she hates having to get it dipped in rhodium over and over. I know myself, I am too lazy to keep having it dipped.
Platinum is the only pure white metal and though it may get nicked and possibly scratched, Id still rather buff it to shine than dip it anything. It will always hold its color, just not its shine.
Here is one of my own reposts about the three metals:
WHITE GOLD Pure Gold is yellow in color. White gold is pure gold that has been combined with mostly white metals to create an alloy with a rich silvery hue. The proportion of gold to other metals is measured in K arats. 18 karat gold is 75% gold; 14 karat gold is 58% gold and 10 karat gold is 42% gold.
White Gold retains a trace of its original golden hue. Therefore white gold jewelry is commonly enhanced with a layer of rhodium, a precious platinum family metal to make it whiter and brighter. Rhodium will wear off over time showing the natural golden hue of the white gold alloy. A periodic reapplication of rhodium is necessary to maintain the bright white finish. The frequency of application necessary is determined by the wearer's individual body chemistry and wear patterns. In rare cases, the required frequency of the reapplication may make platinum a more suitable white metal alternative.
As with all gold, avoid rough wear and contact with chemicals, including chlorine in swimming pools. It is best to have white gold professionally cleaned by your jeweler, though a mild jewelry cleaner and soft cloth may be used at home.
YELLOW GOLD In its pure form, gold is quite soft, so it is combined with other metals to produce strong alloys appropriate for jewelry. In the United States, these alloys are frequently described in karats. 24 karat is pure gold; 18 karat gold is 75% gold; 14 karat gold is 58% gold and 10 karat gold is 42% gold. The higher the gold content, the softer and more easily marred the jewelry will be.
In rare cases, the alloys may react with the wearer's body chemistry, causing a harmless green or black discoloration on the skin which is easily removed with soap and water.
Avoid scratching, rough wear, and contact with cleansers, bleach and even the chlorine in swimming pools. Yellow gold is best professionally cleaned and polished by your jeweler, though a mild jewelry cleaner and soft cloth may be used at home. Store yellow gold jewelry in a soft cloth or pouch to protect its surface.
PLATINUM Platinum is amongst the purest and most valuable of the precious metals. It is more rare than gold and nearly twice as heavy.
Platinum in its purest form is one of the only naturally occurring white precious metals that will not tarnish. Platinum is often rhodium plated to provide a bright finish. Rhodium wears off over time, leaving the platinum with a natural soft patina. The rhodium finish may be reapplied or not according to personal preference. Platinum's purity makes it the perfect choice for those with allergies or fro those who have experienced reactions to other metals.
Although platinum is extremely durable, it is not indestructible. It can be scratched, dented, bent or cracked, similar to gold. As with all fine jewelry, it should be treated with care. Avoid rough wear and exposure to abrasives and chemicals. Platinum can be cleaned at home with a mild jewelry cleaner and soft cloth, but it is best cleaned and polished by a jeweler who specializes in the care of platinum.'

Re: Wedding Bands, Platinum or White Gold?
I think it also depends on how much of the band you see. My e-ring is white gold b/c the setting my DH liked for me was only available thru our jeweler in white gold at the time. When I chose my band, he said I should get platinum if I wanted it - but it has five diamonds across my finger - the metal is only visible on the other side of my hand. To me, it wasn't worth it. Also, shop around a bit - Fortunoffs is a department store that can be pricier than a jeweler. DH has a platinum band and it was only $800.

Re: Wedding Bands, Platinum or White Gold?
My e-ring and wedding band are platinum, but DH's band is white gold. He didn't care what kind of metal his ring was made of. Since a white gold band was so much cheaper, he opted for that one.

Re: Wedding Bands, Platinum or White Gold?
Oh my goodness, platinum all the way - while both gold and platinum have their positive points (just do a search on here to see that)... PLAT is in a class of its own as a metal and doesn't tarnish or fade or YELLOW.
I don't really care about the rarity issue but read what the platinum guild has to say:
'Platinum is rare, the coveted treasure of discerning individuals. There is very little platinum on this earth and it is found in very few places around the world. This exquisite metal is 35 times rarer than gold. In fact, it is estimated that if all the platinum in the world were poured into one Olympic swimming pool it would be scarcely deep enough to cover your ankles. Gold would fill more than three pools. Platinum's rarity makes it exclusive and distinctive - a celebration of your individuality.'
I thought that was pretty cool, actually. Seriously though, platinum does show scratches like all metals but this is true:
'the scratch on a platinum piece is merely a displacement of the metal and none of its volume is lost. So, even though wearing it each and every day may leave an impression on the surface, it remains what it was - a symbol for all things eternal.'
All you have to do is get it buffed, instead of dipping it like gold. I have a sense that some jewelers will say anything to get you to buy gold or plat... they really pressured us too. No matter what you wind up doing, you'll be happy with your ring but I think plat is wonderful!
We have decided to go with white gold. I purchased FH a 'second' titanium band for $100 from Tri County. He is a plumber and I was told that Titanium is a very strong metal

Re: Wedding Bands, Platinum or White Gold?
We both just got our rings, we went with the white gold. My FI wanted a plan white ring. We looked at both and the platinum was $500 more and it looked just like the White gold ring. So we went with the white gold which I don't mind. He did a great job buying the rings too, He saved us close to $400 off of the prices. I don't think I could of done that alone. And If you have the cash use it.

Platinum is stronger and more durable, but gold is more scratch resistant. We're getting platinum.

Re: Wedding Bands, Platinum or White Gold?
We got matching plain platinum bands. I wanted a band to match my e-ring and we wanted matching bands so that settled it.
Since the bands are plain, they were not super expensive.
Edit: There are places that are less expensive that fortunoff to buy rings!
