FI and i went to fortunoff to look at bands for him. The woman that worked there told me that we should not even consider a white gold band for him ($150) because it will turn yellow and that we should do platinum ($1650). I don't care and would just as soon do platinum but I went out with a couple last night and they said that FI should get White gold, that their jeweler recommended it and that we are being taken by opting for the white gold. They said white gold is def better for a guy cause it wont get dinged and scratched because it is a stronger metal. Any advice????

Re: Wedding Bands, Platinum or White Gold?
my Ering is white gold and looks good, if that means anything. Not for nothing, but you could always do white gold now -- at least its a $$ saver -- and upgrade to platinum for an anniversary or something down the road.
I don't know what we'll do yet. though just yesterday a jeweler told me that the price of gold keeps going up and up so much......

Re: Wedding Bands, Platinum or White Gold?
Hey my mom has two titanium rods in her back newly inserted just about 3 weeks ago. So far, they havent rusted so I bet Titanium is just fine!
(Though someone told me she can no longer get an MRI. Then again if something happens to her where she'd need one then I'd go off the deep end at this point!)

Platinum is a 'weaker' metal than gold and it will get dinged and scratched more easily.
Have you considered titanium?
My thoughts exactly... my bands are platinum, as I am HIGHLY allergic to gold.. go figure.. and we got platnium.. although our bands are beautiful, we have been married only 2 and a half years and our rings need to be re-dipped or something becuase they are scratched and not in the best shape.. (we are also very hard on our hands).... WE didnt even THINK of titanium until after we got married. Good Luck!

We got platinum for me and white gold for him - white gold does get less scratched and does NOT turn yellow. That's BS!
We got platinum for me b/c of the diamonds in it - with the diamonds you can't see scratches anyway. Plus, platinums a little lighter and we girls have smaller fingers!

FH and I actually went to look at rings yesterday and my FH was looking at a Titanium ring and the woman we were working with did not recommend getting titanium. She said that if the ring was to get stuck on his finger the only way to remove it was either burn it off or cut the finger off! We were like OK moving on to white gold!

That's very true! And titanium and tungsten rings cannot be sized. So once you have it, that's it!

Both my e-ring and wedding band is platinum and I would not have it any other way.

Re: Wedding Bands, Platinum or White Gold?
We got platinum because I have allergies and plat. is hypo-allergenic and FH wanted to have the same as me. White gold is just as beautiful if you maintain it (which you have to do with plat, too). As long as you bring it in to get dipped every once in a while, when it starts to lose it's color, it will always be beautiful and lovely. As long as neither of you has skin allergies it's a great way to save a few hundered bucks, IMO.

White Gold DOES turn yellow, every single white gold ring i own turned yellow, they are not plated . I will insert some links, if you do a simple search on google you will see the facts!!!!
Platinum is softer than white gold i know that my ering gets scratches on the bottom where my white gold rings was a bit more resistant to that. But it really is a personal prefernce.
The colors differ slightly from one to the next usually plat is a little darker than while gold and also weigts more i believe
Titanium is a good choice if your fh tends to have reaction to any metals I know my fh has trouble with things that are even streling silver and I bought him a titanium ring a few years back and it didnt scratch easily and he has had no reactions to it. They also make alot of interesng designs in titanium if he is interested in something beyond a plain band, and it can be engraved as well as being very reasonable price wise

Re: Wedding Bands, Platinum or White Gold?
both my e-ring and w-ring are platinum and I wouldn't want it any other way.
platinum is the hardest metal and much more valuable than gold. of the 2, plat is the only one that is pure white, so it will always retain that color.
white gold will turn yellow after a while and needs to be dipped in rhodium.
for some reason, plat is more prone to get scratched, but is much stronger than gold. a lot of gold e-rings have platinum prongs for this reason. both my boss & co-worker have yellow gold e-rings with plat prongs.
ETA: I have a white gold ring that I don't wear anymore... it has turned yellow in some areas. (that's not why I don't wear it).
gold is naturally yellow.

Re: Wedding Bands, Platinum or White Gold?
My e-ring is white gold, so me and FH did white gold. Platnium is not a stronger metal, it is a rare precious metal and therefore needs more care because it is harder to maintain.
I'd say do platnium for yourself and white gold for the FH. Its more practical for FH, you will have to really take care of your platnium band.

Re: Wedding Bands, Platinum or White Gold?
at the time we got married, we had spent a ton of money already. We opted for my w-ring to be white gold. Do I wish I had it in platinum, yes, is it a big deal?..not really. About once a year I get it polished and dipped along with my platinum e-ring. It shines up beautifully.
DH had a platinum and gold ring and he lost it. It was too heavy for him and he kept taking it off. Finally after losing it for the 5th time, we opted for a plain yellow gold ring. He hasn't misplaced it once in 7 years and it looks great.
All metals require some care and maintenance to keep them looking new..

Re: Wedding Bands, Platinum or White Gold?
What does your FH want? DH wanted platinum, so there was no discussion. After he spent $$$ on the ring, I thought the cost of the plat was nominal when considering all that is to be spent on the wedding. He is happy with it and the cost fades in the background. Opinions and facts are numerous, but it's what he wants that's important.
