Wedding Day Charity Donation (Sandy Relief)

Hi Ladies -

After Hurricane Sandy hit I had a hard time getting back into the Wedding Planning.
I couldn't believe what my hometown had just been through, the town I'll be married in. I felt bad having this big party when so many people didn't even have a bed to sleep in.
For a while I have thought about making a donation to a charity in honor of our wedding day or our grandparents or something... now being that everyone at the wedding was affected by this storm in some way I couldn't think of a better cause to donate to.
This has now become even more real sitting here watching the 121212Concert with FH. I just brought it up to him and he said he was all for it.
Now my question is how do I go about it and what are your suggestions for letting guests know this is being done. Also, what organization do you suggest I donate to?

i love this idea. i hope you and your family get back on your feet again soon.
as you saw, last nights concert was benefitting the robinhood foundation, which is great (but as far as nonprofits go, this is the the mother of all nonprofits). if you're looking for something smaller you can take a look at some of these. I work in Corporate Charitable giving, and these are some of our approved nonprofits benefitting hurricane sandy victims:

Food Bank For New York City
Jersey Cares
New York Cares
NYC Service
New York Restoration Project
Public Advocate for the City of New York
United Way of New York City

As far as letting your guests know, you can have small cards printed at each place setting, or one per table. i know that some nonprofits actually have cards printed for wedding donations. best of luck to you!
