I went to order my wedding dress and the lady said it takes 5 months to come in from the manufacturer. It is a dress out of a catalog I cant understand what takes so long. Or is this a high pressure sales pitch? Anyone else encounter this? I thought I had plenty of time, My wedding date is Sept 2

Re: wedding dress
I ordered mine back in Oct 04 for my Sep 05 wedding and it was in the last week in January. They told me it wouldn't be in till March so who knows.
However I did tell them that my wedding was a few weeks earlier than it actually is so it will be done and in my closet with plenty of time to spare.

Re: wedding dress
Totally normal! I ordered my dress the first week of January and it will not be here until mid May. I have heard that some dresses can take 8 months too. Lisa

Re: wedding dress
If it's a dress out of a catalog, why don't you just order it from the catalog?
It may be a sales thing in this case if it's a retail store you're purchasing from but they do normally tell you 8 mos before your wedding is when you should order your gown so you are running a little behind.

Re: wedding dress
In my opinion, I think some salons do not want dresses coming in too early because they do not want to store them for long, especially if the bride is doing alterations there. The fittings don't take place until about 2 months before the wedding. My bet is they heard your wedding date and made up the 5 months because that would mean your dress arrives approximately 2 months before your wedding date, just in time for the fittings.
In my case, I ordered almost a year before the big day and they wanted to take 9-10 months to give me my dress. My mom then later made up a lie and told the salon my wedding date was moved up several weeks, and voila, we got the dress in 8 months instead.
So if I had to go dress shopping again, I would lie and say my wedding date was earlier. Who needs the added stress of wondering whether the dress was going to make it in time? I know all salons do not do this, but this has been my experience.

Re: wedding dress
I was told that the salons don't put in the orders right away because of not wanting to store them. All designers can pretty much get you your gown in 8-16 wks max.

I ordered mine the first week of December and it came in the first week of February and the estimate was mid-March. It depends where you order from.

Re: wedding dress
I ordered my gown last March (2004) and it won't be in until the beginning of May (2005) for my Sept 2005 wedding. If you're concerned b/c you wanted to have additional time to look at more gowns then go ahead- you can always rush the order. Otherwise, I really don't see any reason why anyone actually needs to have their dress for a long time before the wedding- 4 months is certainly long enough for fittings.
