Wedding Dress Size Question

Wedding Dress Size Question

Yesterday was my first time looking and trying on wedding dresses. We went to the Bridal Suite in Bay Shore and I found a dress I liked and tried it on. The woman that was helping me told me if I decided to order the dress they would have to order the dress in a size 8. That is fine but the only problem is that I am not even 5ft tall and weigh less then 100 pounds. I just could not understand why she was insisting I get the gown in a size 8. Normally I would be a size 2.

Has anybody ever had experience with a situation like this? I don’t know if I should just try going to a different Bridal Suite that carry that dress and see what they say.

Thanks!

Re: Wedding Dress Size Question

Bridal dresses are measured differently that regular clothes. For example, I wear a size 6 in regular clothes - and I ended up getting a size 10 in my wedding dress. If you feel that it is way off - then ask them to measure you again and have them show you the measurements in the book.
I am sending you an FM as well.

I think that sounds like it would be a little too big but maybe that designer runs extra small. They definitly are ordered much larger then you normally wear. My mom's mob dress ( yes it is technically a 'Wedding'dress) had to be ordered in an 8 when she wears normally a 5/6.

That sounds a little off, but I am a 12 and I took a size 18 in a wedding dress..I think it's a money making racket especially with the larger sizes. I had to pay extra for the size above a 16. A second opinion is an order. Also if you happen to be busty, you may have to go a little bigger to accommodate that. Good luck.

Oh I am defiantly not busty that's for sure! The complete opposite!

Did you get a look at the measurement chart for the designer? I'm basically the same size as you (with no boobs either ) and they ordered me a 6. I have never been more than a 2 in my life and right now I'm def a 0. They do generally order up to charge more for alterations but that seems to be quite excessive. I would ask to see the measurement chart - I could not imagine anyone ordering me an 8 no matter how small the designer runs.

I checked out the size chart and it looks like with my measurements I would be a size 4. The designer of the dress is a Maggie Sottero.

Maybe go elsewhere and see what they say? Or compromise and go with a 6? I definitely would not let them order an 8, that's insane. If a dress is that big on you, after the alterations it's just not going to look right, you know?

That's exaclty what I was thinking. I am going to go somewhere else and see what they say.

Believe, me, it's the right size.

Wedding dress sizes are not normal. I'm a size 2-4 and my dress had to be ordered in an 8.

I went there also and when the girl took my measurements she took them with the dress on and the measurements were 2 inches
more than my normal measurments and she said I would have to order a size 10 dress. I knew my measurements were not the ones she wrote down and I asked her to take my measurements without the dress on and of course they were less. She said she forgot??

I didnt end up getting my dress from there and when I went to the Bridal Reflections, they ended up ordering my dress in a 6 and I a wear between a size 2-4..and I am also 5'6..

I would definitly suggest you go somewhere else for a 2nd opinion...

Re: Wedding Dress Size Question

Well when I tryed on my gown by maggie saterro it was a size 12 and it fit I mean in my waist it the top part was a little big but I am normally a size 6 so I was a bit surprised but that was the size we ordered it in because it fit.

Re: Wedding Dress Size Question

If its a corset back you DEFINATELY DO NOT need an 8. According to the Maggie size chart I was supposed to order a 14. My friend got married in the same dress so I tried on hers. It was an 8 and little snug. I knew I would be losing weight as well so I ordered the 10- 4 sizes smaller than the size chart. It fits perfectly and even if I lose weight it will still fit. The 14 would have been huge and the dress would have been very difficult to alter. I hope that helps. Is the sample a size 8? That would give you some idea of the sizing for your dress.

i know wedding gowns run smaller than normal clothes, but a size 8 sounds too big to me! im usually a 0-2 (im 5'3 and weigh 108--so youre smaller than me) and i ordered a size 4 demetrios gown.

im a 4 and they ordered me a 10 - but in estelles i tried on that same brand and a 6 fit like a glove.

burtons doesnt charge for alteraltions - only for length and bustle, so i am just going along with what they say- god forbid its too small - its alot easier to take a dress in than to let it out

Re: Wedding Dress Size Question

Yeah, it definitely sounds like you should go for a second opinion or discuss your concern with the salespeople. I think most of us expect to get a slightly bigger size in our gowns, but not something completely huge like in your case. Good Luck!

I'm normally a size 8 and I think my gown was either a 10 or a 12. I got my gown at BayShore Bridal Suite too!

My Maggie was ordered size 10 Petite ... I'm barely 5'4', no boobs and at the time was about 118 pounds. I only needed it hemmed.

I really think its a scam having to do with alterations. I tried my dress in a 6 fit perfectly. They ordered mine in a 12, when i picked it up and tried it on it was swimming on me. It's ridiculous how common this is!
