I think if you do favors it should be a personal expression. Something that is significant to how/where you met or that coordinates with your reception theme or location.
I've been to a few weddings where donations were made to a charity in lieu of favors. This doesn't have to be for an medical research. It could be for National Park Preservation, or for an Animal Shelter.

Re: Wedding favors
We are doing CD's they came out really nice, but if you are doing them yourselves, it is a ALOT of work and time consuming.

Re: Wedding favors
We're making our own CDs. In fact, Dad is helping a LOT with these (i feel very lucky because i would be lost on my own).
We're also doing the five almond thing (for the Italians out there!)

Re: Wedding favors
I am doing these. They come wiht oil and you can hang them as a air freshner or even as an ornament. We are trying to get them in a blue instead of the pink, and they are testing blues for me.
I am doing a donation to the NYPD widows and orphans fund (FH is 'on the job') and a 6 pc box of seashell Guylian chocolates. We're having a beach themed wedding.

Re: Wedding favors
I got crystal candle holders from the pfaltzgraff outlet in bellport. They are called rosebud, but they look like a tulip. They are beautiful. My mom and I went and got 2 coupon books which took $20 off a purchase of more that $75. So we purchased separately and saved $40, plus we got an extra % off b/c my mom got a pfaltzgraff membership card. It was great.

Re: Wedding favors
We're doing monogrammed playing cards (really FI's idea). Our first over night trip was to Foxwoods and we celebrate every New Year's at either Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun!

Re: Wedding favors
We did a clear bag and filled it with candy- mini snickers, jordan almonds, tootsie rolls, mary jane's etc and enclosed a card that said Thank you for making this evening a true gathering of friends. Love, Dina & John. Then tied it w/ a ribbon.

Re: Wedding favors
We are getting married 11/26 so we are doing christmas ornaments. After Thanksgiving is the start of the holiday season, so it fits.

Re: Wedding favors
My FH and I couldn't decide between picture frames (his idea) or chocolates (mine) so we're doing both. We're doing little picture frames with the names and table numbers, and then each seat will have this set of chocolate:
