Now that you are planning your own wedding...have you changed your thoughts on the amount you give people when you attend a wedding? I'm starting to realize it's not that easy to cover your plate when people are paying $160 pp. But I'm probably going to start giving people a bit more than I used to.

Re: Wedding Gifts
Most of our friends got married between 06-07, and we always gave $300, rule of thumb...our best friends that got married last month, we gave them $500. We were both in the wedding. You're right though....I think we are going to start giving $350, $400 if we can

I typically give $300, as well...unless it's someone I am super close to and I give more. I never realized $300 barely covers our plates...until I booked my own reception. I'm going to make an effort to give more now. But for the people that pay $250 or more pp...not sure I can cover that on a regular basis. Clearly they have the money! : ) I dont. LOL

Re: Wedding Gifts
I've usually spent $150 per person. It's what I can afford. Though if at the time I can't do it, I'll go less. I wish I could do $200 per plate, but I can't afford that. I know many of my guests will be in the same predicament. I wouldn't expect them to break the bank to come to my wedding. Wish my reality was different.

I think 150 per person is a good amount unless you are in the bridal party.
I also think if you are not that close to the person than 100 per person is more than enough.
I feel as though if people book at a really expensive place they can't expect like $200 per person.

Re: Wedding Gifts
Our first friend-wedding was 2 weeks before our own so I was on LIW by that time and knew what would be considered a generous gift.
I probably would have asked my parents otherwise, which is what my friends probably did.

its funny, b/c some brides I know who paid about 90-100 per plate were expecting to gain back triple what their parents paid for their wedding...They actually thought each couple would give $400 (even those of us who were still in college...like the bride!!) edited bc i cant spell

Re: Wedding Gifts
Our friend are getting married in Nov. FH asked me the other night how much we should give and i said whatever we give them they will give us. we are going to give either 300 or 350. They didn't pay for their RH so that is another reason why i feel we shouldnt go overboard

I feel the same way. I really had no idea what this cost like a year ago. I went to a friend wedding with my FH and we only gave $100 each cause it's all we could afford at the time. Now I'll either not go or hopefully have more to give.

I don't think that is bad. IMO you should give no less than $100 a person and than it just depends on what you can afford.

That's not bad. And really...it should be what you can afford. each of us have our own circumstances. I have friends paying $250+ pp...but their parents are paying...so any gift they get is a profit!

Re: Wedding Gifts
In general, I try to be as generous as I can when giving gifts, but even more so now since I've been wedding planning. I do agree that people have to give what they have because everyone's situation is different. Ahhh weddings- can't live with them, can't live without out them..lol

I give what i can afford. typically $100 per person.
I also think that if you're paying for the wedding yourself that you need to go into thinking that you are probably not going to make money on it...and most people wont even break even.

Re: Wedding Gifts
i typically give $300 for me and FH. More if its a family member...
But it also depends on the location of the wedding too. FH and I attended a wedding in MA and gave $300 and we covered wayyyyyy over our plate based on the hall there (they had no open bar, etc). His friend was kind of shocked we gave that amount! maybe its just a NY wedding thing.

It's definately a NY thing. My friends from out of state dont give gifts that cost anything close to what we give. A toaster oven is an appropriate gift outside of NY! : )

Re: Wedding Gifts
i don't exactly agree with covering your plate or depending on what place the wedding is held at.
a bride on here opened my eyes to that. You being the guest, is it your 'problem' if the bride and groom pick one of the most expensive places such as Oheka Castle? So b/c it's there, you would throw let's say $400 pp so $800 for you and FH? No I don't think so. So whether the bride and groom have it at a VFW or OHeka they're getting what I can afford. The place makes no difference to me
