I was speaking to my aunt (she is 36 but got married 9 years ago) about my registry. I mentioned how there should be enough on there for the shower. She commented that there should be more on the registry bc people buy registry gifts for the wedding. Is this true??? All weddings i have attended I gave money and I thought that was the norm. What is your ladies experience with this? do you give $$ as a wedding gift or do you guy off the registry? what do you anticipate getting as gifts from your guests???
she said 'back in her day' you got a mix of money and registry gifts at the actual wedding. please tell me times have changed! i need the money PLUS i dont need to have to worry about carrying new luggage and pot sets to and from the RH!

Re: wedding gifts
Mostly all LI-based people give money. From our out of staters, I wouldn't be surprised if they gave a registry item.

Re: wedding gifts
Nowadays (especially in NY) people give money at weddings. If you go to a wedding in other parts of the US it actully is normal to bring gifts to the wedding. It is possible though that someone might buy you guys a gift. My brother/SIL received a vase as a gift at their wedding 6 years ago. Also, some people that may not be able to attend your wedding may want to send you something and they may look to your registry for a gift.

This. One of my best friends lives in CA and she already mentioned that she picked the 'greatest' gift for me off of my registry. I'm waiting for her to wheel in my vacuum into the reception maybe it's because i'm a true jaded new yorker, but I have a feeling i might be returning a lot of registry gifts after the wedding to buy the stuff i REALLY need/replenish my bank account!

Although on LI is mostly cash, you may have the occasional present... I think most people have enough sense to ship it to your house instead if they are going the present route

Re: wedding gifts
If I had decided on giving a present as my wedding gift to someone- not that I know of anyone that doesn't give money - I would look on the registry.
If there is nothing left on your registry then what do people give you - sorry to say this something that you hate or some other crap? I have friends who received some statues and some hideous pictures that will remain in her closet!

FHs whole fam is from upstate, and they do mostly gifts there too. Its nice of people to bring anything at all in my opinion.

This is why we did a HM registry because FH's family is from all over
I would keep some registry items that you want, or else you will just wind up with crap that you don't want and can't return

Re: wedding gifts
i actually just received a bunch of stuff of my registry for a wedding gift from an out of state family member. It was very unexpected, but also very nice. There were things i wanted and didn't get at my shower.
