I was speaking to my aunt (she is 36 but got married 9 years ago) about my registry. I mentioned how there should be enough on there for the shower. She commented that there should be more on the registry bc people buy registry gifts for the wedding. Is this true??? All weddings i have attended I gave money and I thought that was the norm. What is your ladies experience with this? do you give $$ as a wedding gift or do you guy off the registry? what do you anticipate getting as gifts from your guests???
she said 'back in her day' you got a mix of money and registry gifts at the actual wedding. please tell me times have changed! i need the money PLUS i dont need to have to worry about carrying new luggage and pot sets to and from the RH!

Re: wedding gifts
We had two registries - one at Bed Bath and the other was www.travelersjoy.com for our honeymoon. We told my Maid of Honor that we prefer stuff from the honeymoon website as we have limited space in our apartment - she didn't relay that message to people and we wound up with a bunch of stuff (things that weren't even ON our registry) for the shower. We have since eliminated our Bed Bath registry and are going with Travelers Joy. I can't recommend it enough - its easy to use, and was really great for us because my FH is from the UK so people can buy us dinners, stuff for our cruise, rounds of drinks, things like that. There's a 7.5% fee - which isn't bad at all. When it comes time to 'cash in' they will direct deposit the funds into your account - takes like 2 or 3 days to do so. Hope that's somewhat helpful :)

Re: wedding gifts
Its often a regional and cultural thing. In the NY area, yes, almost everyone will give money. But my FMIL for example likes to give gifts....so she'll spend the same amount of money she would have (or sometimes more) on the registry gift but she likes the idea of giving something that the couple will have forever. Now in my family, its strictly gifts for shower and money for the wedding. But your aunt is right. After the shower, look at your registry and add a few items...you want to give people the option who like to go the gift route. This might be your opportunity to add some bigger ticket wish list items.
Chances are though, you're going to get mostly cash if your wedding is in NYC/Long Island/Jersey.
