Wedding gown shopping....HELP!

Original post by karabara

I am *just* beginning my gown shopping and really just don't know where to begin. I want to shop at a place with bridal consultants who are nice and genuine, and dresses that are reasonably priced and pretty (would like to stay under $1000, but will go up to $2000. My one experience was at David's Bridal and the bridal consultants there were nightmares.

Can anyone recommend a place that might be better? Also, if you have a BC you like, that would be so helpful too. I'm dreading this part of the wedding planning because I have a low tolerance for salespeople - particularly the ones who are only out for the sale - and am overall stressed about the experience as I don't like shopping as it is, let alone looking for 'THE' dress. Sighhh...

I don't mean to sound so negative....just stressing a bit.

TIA!!!

I also found a place in the city called Bridal Garden which is a not for profit that sells second hand couture gowns. Anyone know anything about them? Their voicemail message is kind of funny....the lady kept having to correct herself. We are between 7th and, i mean 5th and 6th....we are open until...no...until....

I am curious about the place though....

I went to Bridal Garden when I first started dress shopping. It's a suite within a building and they're a non-profit org that gets donations from designers (ie. sample dresses). So some of the dresses are slightly worn versus others that are in great condition. They get varying shipments so they'll have different things each time you go. If you ask for help if you're looking for something specific, they can suggest a few things, otherwise you pretty much sort thru the racks by yourself. While I was there another girl found 'the one' and it was gorgeous. I think it was either a Christos or Jim Hjelm. I found a Rivini gown that I loved but it was a bit too pricey for me and had a few noticeable snags on it.

You may also want to try any of the Macy's. They're pretty affordable.

Good luck!

I went to Estelle's and Debbie helped me. She was really nice gave me alot of time and attention and the dresses I looked at were all under $1000.
I looked trhu the racks, selected what I wanted to try on and she brought them all into the fitting room. No hassles at all. Maybe try there and look for Debbie.

I went to Fantasia Bridal in Rocky Point and it was really great--I worked with Linda there....good luck! Just remember to keep an open mind and try on lots of different styles!

I second Fantasia and I LOVE Linda. They were so amazing patient with me and they do price matching.

I third would HIGHLY recommend Fantasia! Linda was my salesperson...i went on a day w/o an appt, and after having been to a million other places & tried on every dress on LI...i found THE ONE! Their customer service is incredible...always, always friendly and knew me when I walked in...you can read my review as well...happy shopping!

I went to 11 places in two weeks, I feel your pain. It is stressful. I had the exact same budget as you -- I found beautiful gowns for under 1,000, and definitely under 2K in every store I went to.
I bought my dress from Lotus Bridal in BK.
If you work in the city, RK bridal is great. YOu don't need an appointment, but must get there before 5:30.
Bridal Reflections in Massapequa was nice and they did bring me beautiful gowns for under 2K to try on, but they are overpriced. I tried on my gown there, and it was almost 200 more than it was at Lotus where I ordered it.
Good luck! Biggest piece of advice, do research, and don't go to more than one shop a day.

I'm sorry to hear that you had a bad experience at David;s Bridal. Which location did you go to? I went to the one in Queens (3500 48th Street) and I must say my bridal attendant was Carol and she was a doll. The customer service was superb and I even purchased my gown from them. If that's not the location that you went to, I highly recommend there.

I second that!! I also went to that same David's location and highly recommend Tracy L. and Carol too. Tracy helped me on my first dress shopping trip back in July. She pulled 3 dresses based on my preference for lace, and the 3rd was THE ONE!! I went to 2 other stores to try on other dresses for comparison, but kept dreaming of the lace on MY dress! So I went back to David's in November.

Although I called and was told that Tracy would be there on the day I was coming in to order, she wasn't. Carol was there instead, and was very helpful too. They even put the order under Tracy's name for the commission for helping me. And when I went to pick up my dress at the beginning of December, Tracy was there again. She remembered exactly who I am, and it was a pleasure to work with her!!! She was such a sweetheart! The poor girl was sick that day, but was extremely helpful and cheerful even through her sniffles! It was like catching up with an old friend from college, rather than the typical salesgirl-customer relationship.

If you liked any of the David's dresses and want an excellent shopping experience, I'd definitely recommend requesting an appointment with Tracy.

I highly recommend Lillette's in Baldwin- all their BC's are great but if you do go I recommend Gerri.

They have a large selection of gowns and the service and helpfulness can't be beat imo- I ordered my Maggie Sottero from there (pic is in my album if you want to see it).

Btw- they are closed until after the holiday as well.

I recommend Geri at Lillette's as well.

I went to the David's Bridal by the Smithaven mall. i had a girl named Nicole. She was wonderful, and I am not usually very pleased w/sales people. She let me try on a million dresses, I was even there after they closed. she helped me find something perfect!
When i go back for the BM dresses I am definatly going to ask for her again.

I am sorry that you had a bad experience there!!! I thought I was going to have one too and by chance it worked out!

Lots of Luck!

Hey Tia. I had an AWEFUL experience at Lillette's (not sure if I spelled it right.) The women that I Dealt with was so rude and did said that I had a 'weird shaped body'. I had a great experience at Bridal reflections. I bought a dress right off the rack thought because they are a little pricey. HOWEVER, after they cleaned the dress and did all the alterations, the dress was amazing. I am getting married in one week and I cannot wait to wear my dress. You have to have someone who is going to tend you from your shoe to your vail. I hope this helps.

Good Luck

I went to Burtons bridal in Melville..the sales people were great and they had a nice selection and they are so much cheaper than the others!

ditto....they're not pushy at burtons. if you can go during the week (before 5) it won't be too crowded either.

I know how you feel. I, too, hate annoying and rude salespeople. I wanted to, and did, buy my dress on the first day of shopping for it. We went to several stores, but when we went to Artemedia (in Brooklyn), the owner (Natasha) was fantastic. She wasn't in my way and gave me space, options, and time. Also, she didn't tell me what I would want and not want, as some others insisted on doing.
