Wedding related job issues!

Wedding related job issues!

I was offered a position (decent salary) this week. (I've been laid off since January). I just called the lady who offered me the position back - she hadn't told me much about benefits. I am not happy at all with the benefits. There would be a 90 day probation period - that is fine (standard). 6 days sick leave (after 6 months!). 2 personal days. No health insurance until September! And the biggest issue - she was not happy at ALL that I am getting married in Sept. I would get 10 days vacation after a year of employment (that's nuts!) and she wants me to tell her by this Friday what my wedding and honeymoon plans are. In other words, I would have to book my h-moon etc. by Friday just for her benefit. Most companies are not like this from an HR standpoint. Another thing is, she asked me if I was currently going to grad school, and I said no - and she was happy I am not currently (though I am planning on it-what would she do then- fire me??). I told my FH and he doesn't want me to take the job. How crazy is that? She was all happy to have me until I said I was getting married in Sept. (which I am CERTAIN) i told her in the intervew process. Would you take the job? (I'm currently temping at a friend's company which I like).

It doesn't seem like they are very accomodating and that may stress you out. I wouldn't want to deal with a new job environment and my wedding planning at the same time but the decision is up to you. Good luck with whatever you choose.

In my opinion..

Take it.

The economy is TUFF and just get back working..
You never know what you can find and companies always look at working people first!!

good luck

I think the thing about having to wait for health insurance is becoming pretty standard -- I was in the same situation in my new job, but was able to doing consulting work at my old job until my health benefits kicked in. It sounds to me like you should wait until after the wedding until you take a new job. Most employers have policies like the ones you described and are not too happy about giving people a lot of time off in their first few months of employment. If you're happy where you are stay there until after the wedding.

Don't rush to book your honeymoon for her sake. If she's being like this now, who knows how difficult she will be later. Would she be you direct boss or is she in HR?

She would be my direct boss and she is HR (i'm in HR ) But, good idea, I think I may temp til after the wedding if I can..... less stress to deal with. I can't handle another maniac boss.

They are crazy. My FH started a job in March and we went on our honeymoon in July. He just went in the negative on his vacation.

Though T is right. The economy is the pits right now.

Just letting you know you not crazy for feeling the way you do. Sometimes we just have to do what we have to do to get our foot in the door.

I would talk to her more. Maybe you can get a feel about how flexible she is w/ all of their policies. She should really understand that this is the most important time period of your life! If not, then I don't know if I'd want to work for a company that doesn't consider me, my family, and personal life... to a certain extent...

Re: Wedding related job issues!

if you're happy temping, then stay with temping.

if she wants to know your HM plans, can't you just give a rough estimate of how much time you'll need off - one week, two weeks, etc? i don't think you have to run out and book everything, just give her an estimate.

If you're that desperate financially-take it. Otherwise, screw this offer. What business is it for this woman to plan your HM, plan your wedding entirely FOR you?? Screw it. Stay with the temping since you're happy and continue looking.

She was all sweetness til I mentioned the wedding (again- i had mentioned it 2x in interviews); she is not willing to be flexible - she wants to know dates and times by this friday! I said it could be a week to 10 days - she flipped out! What great timing to get laid off! LOL

Re: Wedding related job issues!

I have a problem with health insurance not kicking in early, but if that's how it is in your industry, then fine.

On your vacation/honemoon plans, a)they'll have to make an exception for you and b)if you want to take the job and she wants to know the plans now, I would say that you're taking the full 10 days after your wedding (i.e. two weeks). You don't have to book it just yet, but this way she knows, and if you choose to go for less days, then you can always come into work and get the days credited. But if she is inflexible with this stuff now, what will happen if/when you have a baby or have to take an extra sick day?

don't take it unless you absolutely have to...

I have to agree with T on this one. You can always continue to look for a job. I have friends who have been looking for over a year now. Companies don't have to make the benefits 'good' anymore. There is probably a line of people that would kill to get the position.

if its paying you significantly more than the temping, I would take the job. You can look for a better one while racking in the $$. You can also quit at any time and go back to temping. Work there leading up to the wedding and then quit!

If its such a short time that you work there, you don't need to put it on your resume -you can leave on bad terms and not worry about references.

Another job may not come your way for awhile, may as well take the money now.

Re: Wedding related job issues!

I am sure you know your wedding date and basic HM info (probably taking the standard Thursday before wedding- 2 full weeks off). Just give her those dates and then plan your HM inside that time.

You have to decide- do you NEED a job? If not, then look until you find what you want, but know that in this ecomony it may take months again.
If you need the job then take it and continue looking. 10 vacation days after a year is a pretty standard policy. In this economy it is an employers market- they offer less $ and less benefits and find tons of over qualified people to fill their positions.
