there are no job positions for this year for me or for FH Im so upset I send out my resume to over 120 schools and called them so many times during the summer- only to find out this week that the 'the position has been filled'. D amn NYC budget
I will most likely be accepting a job at a day care as a pre school teacher though however you work all year round no summers or those occasional weeks off. Im just so upset though I was really looking foward to having my own classroom and doing what I love to do (while getting payed for it!)
Hpefully next year will turn out better........
Oh unfortuately I cannot substitute either since I need a steady income and benefits so thats out too
Thank ladies for letting me vent

Athena, sorry to hear this.... i can't imagine that there is NO teaching jobs in the city? they are ALWAYS looking for teachers. they don't know their *** from their elbow... have youtried literally walking into a school with your resume??? sometimes they get innudated with resumes, they don't even lookat them. thats how i got my job in the city.
plus, there are schools out there that will hire you... it might not be in the best area, or your certifiaction area, but i wouldn't give up on the city just yet! my advice, go into schools tomorrow and friday with your resume and see what happens/

I agree...lots of 'hard to staff schools' have plenty of vacancies that don't get filled. What is your license are? I know of one school that has 2 open positions, it's JHS in the Bronx...FM me if you want info

I did hear that b/c of budget constraints, NYC has a freeze on right now. But, I also heard that at the end of this school year, there will be tons of retirements, which will open up the system again. Could you try for a permanent sub position someplace? Or maybe a leave replacement will open up? I'm so sorry, I know first hand how hard this is. Keep trying, and something will come your way.

yikes...that *****. i am surprised to hear that there isn't even anything available in the city... that's nuts. the bronx and some parts of brooklyn always need teachers, but the commute may be too much if you're in grad. school.
i will keep you posted if i hear anything. i thank god every day for my job in one of the best districts in Nassau... i am so lucky. and the only reason i think i got it was i knew the principal from when i was a TA there.... i would like to think my qualifications helped too, but sometimes they like to hire people they know.
my school will have THREE leave replacements this year due to pregnancy. i will keep you in mind the minute i find they're hiring!
GOOD LUCK!
p.s. also try catholic schools (pay stinks) but schools on LI love to see experience anywhere.

do NOT give up on the city.. The first couple of days you literally have to walk in to a lot of different schools and hand deliver resumes.. They have teachers resign the first couple of weeks!! The NYC recruiter even said this is true.. Keep your head up- things will work out!!

absolutely! Something similar happened to me 7 years ago and looking back it was the best thing to happen for my career. It is VERY frustrating but have faith that it will all work out~til then keep an eye and ear out & we will all be rooting for you!
What about Long Island? Did you try schools close the border?
I'm so sorry to hear that. Let's open our own school. We can have a wedding school and you can teach. I'll be the principal and your starting salery will be 100,000.00 a year + benies!
