So my FH and I looked at reception sites today and we don't agree on sites. Initially we both agreed on a weekend wedding and not in Nassua county. There were a few sites near us that I thought 'what the heck why not just look.' Out of the sites that we looked at, I absolutely loved the DeSeversky Center. However, my FH is not too thrilled about everyone staying near the source mall (or the equivilant) and he thinks this is not the 'ideal wedding' that we had both agreed on in the beginning before we began looking. I feel torn because we don't want to stay around here, we have a lot of out of town guests and we envisioned a beachy place out east where everyone can stay, but since beginning this process I realize there are no 100% perfect place, every place has pros and cons and everyplace has its own personality, it is about finding one that fits best with your vision. To sum up - I guess I feel like if I try to push DeSeversky I am 'reneging' on our joint vision and I don't want to do that, but I also am scared that I won't find a place that I like as much that will meet all our requirements. What do you think? Also, has anyone seen DeSeversky but picked another place out east for whatever reason (but not to crazy $$ - we don't want to spend more than 130pp). Also we are having a small wedding 100 people.

Re: Went to look at reception sites today
I dont think you should feel bad if you are 'renigging' on what you first decided. Its just life, people change their minds. FH and I had a totally diff plan before we started looking and then once we did start to look around we got other ideas and totally changed our mind. I think you need to maybe look at a few place and decide what things about each are important. Make sure you communicate how you feel though as well as listen to how he feels. This is a big decision. Best of luck

I think you should check out more places to get more ideas. Sometimes you pick a place that you weren't even considering. I speak from experience. I wasn't even thinking of checking out Villa's but I just went one day for the heck of it and fell in love. Just keep looking you will find your place.

Re: Went to look at reception sites today
We had originally said we had wanted to do a Vermont Wedding - when it came time for planning we took several trips there and just could not find the place we had envisioned and just did not find it practical to have it there. Then we looked on LI and found the perfect place. I think you should do the same...now that you know you like the DeSeversky Center I would go out east and investigate your options out there. Theres nothing wrong w/ changing your mind but you definitely should make sure you know what you are ruling out.

Re: Went to look at reception sites today
After looking at 20+ reception sites, my FH and I also realized that there is no 'perfect place'. You're right, every place has its pros and cons and you have to figure out which place is perfect for the two of you. We ended up booking Flowerfield which was the last place that we looked at. I didn't even want to go look there because it was so far out east, but when we walked in I knew that it was perfect for us. The Deservsky Center is beautiful and your guests could stay at a number of places (Roslyn Claremont, Harrison House, etc) that your FH might be happy with. We loved it there, but they couldn't accomadate the number of guests that we are having. If he really doesn't like the location, keep looking at other places out east. You might find something that you both like even more. Good Luck!

Re: Went to look at reception sites today
Definitely keep looking. After seeing some more places you may change your mind and go back to the original vision, or you FH may see a bunch of sites and realize that DeSeversky is the perfect place for you. Just keep looking so you keep your options open.

So Far we have looked at:
Hudson Valley: Round Hill House Glenmere Mansion Onteora Emerson Lodge
Long Island: Manhasset Preserve Vanderbilt Mansion DeSeversky centy Country Weddings (wedding coordinator) Chateau La Mer
We have been to weddings/events at: Flowerfields North Ritz Club Fox Hollow Bridgeview Yacht club Carlton (and a few others that I can't place names)
We have eliminated the following either due to too large # of people min or too expensive: Atlantica Cresent Nassau County Museum Vanderbilt Centerport Lands end woffler estates montauk manor Rams head inn
We have appts to see: Lombardi on the soud Pridwin Michael Anthonys (new location) Gurneys
I'm tired!
We also thought about Vermont and we have 1 place there 'the castle' that we are still interested in looking into but have not been able to go up. Did you see this place - or anyone been there?
Any other suggestions. I feel like a broken record. Thanks everyone for your support.

Re: Went to look at reception sites today
The Vanderbilt Mansion in Oakdale has the same feel as the deseversky and it is out east. 110 per person on Friday and It is is small. Only hold like 130ish. Lovin Oven is the caterer and they are amazing! There is the holiday inn express out there that has a free shuttle to and from your reception with your blocked rooms.
Yes I looked at Vanderbilt yesterday - it was beautiful, you will have a very elegant and historically rich event. In the end we wanted something in a more remote location i.e. surrounded by acres or trees. I am an upstate girl and my FH and I met at college (Binghamton) and we use to go to the nature preserve all the time together - it is where we fell in love so we want someplace more remote to recapture that magic. Thanks for the suggestion.

Did you look at Bear Mountain? It's got a great lodge feel and pictures by the lak would be beautiful.

Re: Went to look at reception sites today
Bear mountain is really pretty, but it is a public park so there will be a lot of other people around since we want a July/August wedding. Also, a good friend of ours is considering this place. Thanks for the suggestions, they are appreciated.

Re: Went to look at reception sites today
Something to investigate since you are having a small wedding is that there are a number of homes in the Hamptons, Sagopanack and Sag Harbor that you could rent for a wedding weekend. I don't know what all of the costs would be--catering, flowers, etc, but its an option to think about. Good luck!

Re: Went to look at reception sites today
What about the Castle at Tarrytown ? I'm not sure how expensive it is, but my old boss threw his Mom an extravagant 60th birthday party there and it was supposedly wonderful!
The Castle will be outside of her budget, I belive it's like $200 a head. But another place you may want to check is Snuff Mill at the Botanical Gardens in the Bronx. They have a max of 110, so it's ideal for smaller weddings. I don't know what kind of look/feel you're going for, but the place is kind of rustic.
