Went to the Derm yesterday and here is info

Original post by Espo22

Ok I know alot of girls on here were saying theyhave the same problem as me with breaking out lately and wanted info.

I went yesterday and got the cortisone shots. They really didn't hurt at all, which is great lol. Its the next day now and all the pimples went down ...i still have some marks though from previous ones i had popped but its barely noticeable and make up will cover these up easily lol. He also gave me a topical cream called 'DUAC' i used it last night before bed and it really helped with the ones that left marks.

He also said something very interesting...he asked if i moisturize and i said yes sometimes and he asked why, which confused me lol...he said for some reason everyone thinks they should moisturize but ppl really shouldn't...he said our face produces its own oils, and putting on moisturizer is like putting oil on top of oil.

i have had the cortisone shots before and it really works, but i dont advise getting them often. cortisone can cause muscle atrophy, and if taken too much can cause atrophy (indentation) in the skin on your face. just wanted to let you know, b/c i dont think derms tell you all the time b/c insurance pays them a lot of $$ for those shots.

regarding the moisterizer i think it depends on the type of skin that you have. some people have naturally dry skin, so i would think they would need to use moisterizer. also, if you are taking certain acne medications such as antiobiotics, or accutane, it is advisable to use a moisterizer with SPF b/c your skin is at risk for becoming very very dry and is extra sensitive to the sun.

Oh yeah i definitely don't plan on doing the shots alot. I break out but never like i did recently and im going away soon and didn't want to be in florida like that lol. But thank you for the advice

Yeah it definitely depends on the skin type and also the type of moisturizer, i think alot of ppl use moisturizers with alot of oil in it...When i do moisturize my face i only use Cetaphil which is non-comeodogenic, but i have very dry skin and although i don't moisturize often its ok.

oh i refuse to take any antibiotics or do accutane, ill use topical creams if i have to but even most of them i wont use. But yeah even proactiv they say to stay away from the sun if you are using it. Since it was summer, i stopped using proactiv bc of that

with me its definitely not the moisturizer or anything like that...See i have a hormonal imbalance and this is whats causing it now. What i need to do is go back to the gyno soon like im supposed to lol and get more tests done at the lab she wants me to go to...i think they want to put me on medication for my hormonal imbalance. It was pretty bad, i was getting my period every 2 weeks for about 8 months

Hey D,

Just wanted to tell you that I used to do the cortizone shots and they work miracles. i told my cousin, who's a doctor, and she looked at me like i was nuts. she told me not to do it again b/c it attacks your liver. i got scared off it real quick. i also don't know what kind they use or if there's any differences.

Re moisturizer, for oily skin i think the water based ones are great. i usually put NARS make-up base under tinted moisturizer. don't know if that makes any sense, but I do see the make-up last a little longer.

re break outs, I find that lots of stress makes me break out with the big, painful, red pimples. but getting a facial w/extractions every month has helped so much with that. gives a more flawless look. also, try products that come from the dead sea. there's the Ahava line and they have a great mud mask. it also comes as a set with cleanser and moisturizer. what worked wonders from me too was someone brought me back the sea salt from the dead sea, Israel. I use the Cetaphil also.

I luv talking make-up as you can see LOL

hey steph

Oh i don't know about moisturizers for oily skin bc i have the opposite problem, my skin is very dry. But i dont use moisturizer bc my make up feels heavier when i put moisturizer on first, i also stay away from liquid foundations bc of that. I either like to wear just a little bit of loose powder or lately ive been using a concealer stick but i dont use it all over my face, just a few trouble areas. Thats why ive been tanning this summer bc i dont want to wear ANY face make up, just mascara and lip gloss but thats not working so well bc i broke out lol.

Oh the breakouts are bc of what i mentioned above...I have a hormonal imbalance that i need to get on medication for, so i really need to get on that.

Yeah I have that cream La Mer at home but i dont use it lol. I did go for facials a couple of times just for when i used to break out before and it does work great, but i dont go often bc i am one of those ppl that if too much is done to my face it makes it worse. But starting about 6 months or less before the wedding im gonna go every 6 months

Thanks for all the advice though

duac is a topical cream for pimples...you put it on once a day around the affected area and yes you need a prescription
