What are your parents like?

What are your parents like?

Were they really strict when you were growing up? Or really laid back?

Mine were pretty strict, although I was a really good kid. They probably did more bad things when they were young than I did...I think my grandparents on both sides were more laid back--is that weird?

Now my parents are very silly...my mom is constantly singing along with the radio and then saying Did you hear what they just said?!?!? (favorites include Shaggy's It Wasn't Me and Sugar Ray's Every Morning)

Mom was/is a hippie, so it was very relaxed. Grandma, on the other hand, was born & raised in Englad, so she was much stricter with us (well, actually, just me). But mom also was very much into making us independent, and lets us do what we wanted to, but stressed that we had to live with consequences of our actions & decisions.

My parents weren't really that strict when I was growing up. I think that is because I was a good kid. My brother put them through some strange torture with the troubles he got into, so I think they felt blessed to have one trouble-free child. They didn't spoil me and they were definitely involved in my life and protective to a point, but I was never grounded or hit or given really unrealistic expectations.

Mine were pretty much midline.

My mother once made the mistake of saying that the words in 'my generation's' music didn't have meaning like they did in 'her generation's' music. I just started laughing and started singing Do-Wa-Diddy-Diddy-Dum-Diddy-Do. She never busted on my music again.

My parents werent very strict at all. They were very loving when I was younger and when I was growing up. I would say they were a little over protective of me since I was the 'baby' lol.

Mine are as strict as they come, and I'm still treated like I'm 12.

eta: I'm the oldest, and my brother gets away w/ sooooo much more than I ever did. Maybe 'cause he's the onyl boy, maybe 'cause he's the baby....maybe both!

Ummm..my parents are old school..so they were strict with certain things..

They were strict with cerfew's...especially with me..(since I was the only girl). According to my father,,,girls should not be out past a certain time at night,,otherwise people would talk..

ETA: other than the cerfew thing,,,they never gave me a problem. They were always there for my brother and I and there was so much love and affection in my house that I didnt mind being at home,,(sound weird)?

Re: What are your parents like?

my parents were both wild growing up, so they were super strict with us. My father made us read classical books from 5th grade on, I used to hate him for it, until I got to high school and had already read all required books. Then my father took a 3rd job as an encyclopedia salesman, which he would be working towards a free set of encyclopedias. It was nice of him to do that for us, but that resulted in us having to research topics and report back to him at the end of the week. On christmas he got us speed reading classes as our main gift. We were like W T F? I laugh at it now, DH thinks my dad was great for doing that. We did not have cable and he had us watch Jeopardy everynight and play each other. Who ever won got to chose what show we watched at 8 o'clock that night. Once he worked parttime as a security guard in exchange for us to learn instruments.

I can go on and on...but I got a scholarship, my brother got one and my two sisters also recieved them. My 3 younger brothers and sisters will probably get scholarships as well, so I guess my dad was just investing.

Re: What are your parents like?

Let's see. My mom and dad were never married so when they broke up I was around 5.
My mom and I moved here when I was 9 and then she believed that I would be better off if I finished HS in Colombia. So I lived there with my grandmother who was very old school and strict, so I missed to do a lot of the things that teenagers were doing at the time.
I can understand now more, but at the time I had a lot of fights about this with my grandma.
I move back here when I was 17 and my mother was always very open and understanding and pretty much gave me some freedom.
It was hard but it made more independent, which sometimes can be a bad thing especially in a marriage.

My parents are very typical Italian-Americans. Strict with somethings - curfew, going out, behaving in front of company, attending all family functions. My father was big on 'RESPECT' and stuff ... still is, it drives me nuts that he gets angry when I disagree

Re: What are your parents like?

my mom was a young mom ..she had me just after she turned 18
her and my biological father divorced when i was 14 months old.

From tehre on in i was VERY spoiled.

she was like my best friend, i idolized her.
i was very lucky to have her.

THEN she married my stepdad. i hated him. he was/is VERY strict.
i was mowing the lawn at age 9 or seomthing. he was very very strict and very very hard on me.
i resent him.

(he isnt half as strict to my younger siblings, his biological kids)

My parents were very strict, which is kind of ironic since they were big potheads and drinkers during the first few years they were married. Since my brothers and I are grown now, their laid-back sides show more, but they still have high expectations for us (i.e. be a responsible person, work hard, etc.)

My parents were pretty strict, but loving at the same time. I was a pretty good kid, so there weren't too many battles. I didn't have a curfew, just as long as they knew where I was and who I was with, and I never stayed out that late anyhow.

They were strict w/ certain things. Depending on the situation I guess, one would be more laid back than the other. As far as curfew goes, my mom was more of a pain in the a$$ w/ that. My dad would fall asleep so he had no clue when I came home, but of course mom had to stay up until I walked in the door.

Its funny how I just said to FH this weekend, how I dont miss my curfews anymore....its a great feeling! LOL

Re: What are your parents like?

When I was growing up my parents were strict about certain things that my friends' parents were not -- ie. going to the mall alone in middle school, not taking rides from people who just got their license -- but I realize now that these were more common sense things and I guess understand them (esp. as a reporter writing about all these kids who are killed in accidents).

As I got into late HS and college, I realized they were much more laid-back. While my friends had curfews when they were home from school, I didn't because my parents trusted me. They were fine with me moving in with FI. When I was in college most of my friends were older and so I got a fake ID. I told them and they thought it was funny!

My parents were very strict with me since I was the only child. School and curfew was a big thing and so was dating. I didn't have a boyfriend until I was 18. Over the years they loosened up but they drove me insane sometimes...
