Re: What are your thoughts on home schooling?
being home schooled and not social is sheltering a child, IMO.
they will have a much harder time adjusting to 'the real world'.

I agree.
A few weeks back, DH and I were watching Wife Swap (one of my guilty pleasures ) and there was a couple that home schooled their 8 (I think it was 8) children. I made me really mad.

I agree with this. When children are home-schooled where does their social interaction come from? Also, parents don't have the same training that school teachers have. This is especially true in the higher grades. How can a parent know enough about Science, Math, History, English, etc. to give their children an education on par with those going to school with experienced and knowledgeable teachers?

I have never seen it produce a well adjusted child, IMO - children need to be exposed to their typical peers and deal with the world right from the start - keeping them in the home does nothing to protect them when they get older.....

Re: What are your thoughts on home schooling?
Thank you. You are all saying exactly what I was thinking! I understand they do all they can for their children socially but IMO its not the same as being in school away from the parents all day. I was in a class of approx 800 students and was involved in almost everything. I just dont think its the same. In a way I think it is sheltering, I have known a few homeschooled children.
I know depending on who the teacher is it may have its benefits but it is not for me.

I saw this one too! The kids said they had rarely left the property! I know not every family is like that, but I felt kinda bad for those children.

In my opinion, children need to be well rounded and taught how to socialize and deal with conflicts with other people in addition to learning how to read, write and do math. Life is learned through experiences not just through books or the computer.
I have only met one person that was home schooled. He was already an adult and he was very smart, but he had no common sense. He was also very quick to stereotype people.

I told DH that I felt that it was bordering child abuse after we saw that!

I always imagine home school kids to live in poor farm areas. I never gave much thought to it in NY. It would be a great disadvantage to home school here.

There was an interview on HBO the other day with a porn star. She was 25 and had been in porn videos since she was 18....She described her upbringing as strict.
You guessed it, she was home schooled!!!

Re: What are your thoughts on home schooling?
I knew one family on LI that was home schooled. They were home schooled but were allowed to play little leauge, CYO swim team, etc. for social interaction.
They were a nice family but there were definitely major issues with the parents and the kids.

Completely agree. Where is the chance to develop social skills?

Re: What are your thoughts on home schooling?
From a teacher's perspective I think it is crazy...first of all parents usually don't have the same relationship with kids as teachers (I have had a gazillion parents say to me 'he's good for you???? He's a monster at home!') Therefore I think it would be VERY difficult for a parent to teach a child at home, just bc of the relationship dynamic. Second, in kindergarten most of our curriculum is socialization, being a good citizen, sharing, using words, problem solving, etc. How can these skills be effectively taught in a one on one teaching situation. Third, school is a child's outlet...there turn to be independent people - and I think to deprive a child of that outlet is absurd and compeletly unfair to him/her.

Re: What are your thoughts on home schooling?
ive always been against it but a client of mine is doing it and pointed out some good things -the child can still do things like dancging school and sports through local and community programs -the child is not exposed to all the crazy kids out there as much- exposed to the sex and drugs and bad language at an early age -the child has more one on one with the family and it promotes better relationships with the parents and probably more obedient
i was just reading last week how my high school had a ski trip- the kids were doing heavy drugs, drinknig and having sex on the sschool bus...kids these days are really scary and id almost want to try my best to help them stay clear of that so early in life
im NOT home schooling my children- i dont think i would- but im just showing some points for it - is all

Re: What are your thoughts on home schooling?
I just met someone who home schooled her daughter for a few years. She was telling me that there are groups you can join to do activities together with other home schooled children. She did it because, at the time, she was not living in the best neighborhood and the schools were awful. She said that anyone else she ever met who home schooled did so either because of bad schools or because the parents were super religious and did not want the kids to learn some of what the schools teach (the example given was that the kids are taught that some kids may have gay parents, etc.). Personally, I'd want my kid to learn about diversity!
For me, homeschooling is just too far removed from the life I knew as a kid. However, I don't know what I will think if my kid gets a teacher I don't like. I'll end up making sure they learn anyway.
