Re: What are your thoughts on home schooling?

My coworker homeschooled her daughter for kindergarten and 1st grade. She started going to an actual school this year, and it is a huge adjustment for her.

The only good thing is that my coworker made sure that her daughter participated in lots of social activities, including Girl Scouts, soccer, and dance, so that she wouldn't miss out on gaining those social skills.

I think that this is really important for homeschooling to be successful.

My fiances nephew is homeschooled and is a terror because of it. I don't like going over there for more than an hour, and NO ONE will babysit for him he is so difficult. He is extrememly intelectually smart, but how will she teach him when he enters highschool? Plus, he is so socially aukward that I can see real problems for him in the future. She also tried to bring them to those groups where other kids are home schooled, but they are mostly radical religious people, so needless to say that didn't work out either. I think it's a dangerous game to play with your children's lives like that and I don't like it at all. He may be smart, but he has no discipline and no friends. Just sad. Okay vent over!

home school = a non-socialized brat!

kids who are home schooled never learn how to adjust to other people and the basic socialization skills needed to survive in this world. they also tend to become rather self-centered teenagers/adults, as they grew up with 100% attention on themselves!

my niece who has been in movies and spends 1/2 the year across the country is home schooled but by no means is she a brat or anti-social. She has such a GREAT personality. She socializes with other home schooled kids, goes to karate. My Step-brother and SIL are both actors.

Just curious, what is involved in home schooling? I mean, I assume that the state gives you a curriculum and that there are some checks and balances somewhere. Someone has to make sure you're really doing it, right?

It depends. I know someoen whpo used tor un a home school, it had several kids in it, and ALL of the kdis had out of the home social activities. They all did dance or karate, or sports, so they knew how to interact with other kids.

I think it depends on the reaonss you want to do it. if you want to shelter your child it's a bad thing, but there are other reasons. I wanted to be homeschooled when i was a kid because I was so far ahead of everyone else and booored

Re: What are your thoughts on home schooling?

i know a few children who are home schooled, i wish i had the patients for it, it takes alot. i have to say they are so socially rounded. they have MANY friends, and i see nothing wrong with it as long as your willing to teach your children everything that is necessary. Its up to you, no one else.

the state makes it mandatory, that your child is evaluated, and they are doing well, other wise they have to attend public school. Most home schooled children actually do better then public school children, because you can gear the lessons to the way the person understands and learns. I can understand that

I think individuals who home school their children are making a huge mistake. It would have a severe effect on their social development.

What about doing it just for one grade?

I don't think it's wise to do it all through school. Kids have to learn about little things, like getting to the classroom on time, handling both the positive and negative behaviors of their classmates, etc. But maybe a few months of home schooling could be good for the parents and the kids. I'm just trying to keep an open mind here. I still feel like public school is best, especially after having overpaid for a house in a 'good district.'

No, you don't have to follow NY curriculum. You can pick a school anywhere in the U.S. and use theirs and do their testing. However, when it comes time to selecting colleges, they may be in a big disadvantage if they want to stay in NY if they have been doing another states curriculum....The whole thing is just not a good idea, IMO.

Re: What are your thoughts on home schooling?

i think its crazy! it really does deprive the kids of the socialization they need. not to mention,do the parents really know and understand all the stuff they're teaching their kid?
i'm a speech teacher at a public school., and we have a little boy who is homeschooled that comes to our school once a week for speech therapy.... hes in 4th grade i think, and should have started speech a while ago.... but because he never really left the house, and mom didn't have the knowledge of speech/language development that people in a school have, it was never picked up until now as hes getting older....its really a shame, hes so far behind with it. public school is the best place for kids- not only for the socialization, but also because of the resources and knowledge that the people working there have....
another story- my moms friend homeschooled her kids, and when the oldest girl got to middle school age, she HATED being homeschooled and would complain all the time about it.... luckily, the mom listened, and now the kids go to a private christian school.....

Re: What are your thoughts on home schooling?

I think there are advantages in both. I guess it just depends on the situation you are in. If you are doing it just because the kids don't want to go to school, then I think it's a bad idea. But if you are doing it because the kids or the parents are involved in other things and can't put 100% into normal school then maybe it's better to do it at home.

I haven't noticed that anyone brought up the point of having parent/child together that long. Among many reasons I am against home-schooling I also wonder if parents and children need a break from each other.

BTW.... My brother is home-schooling his two kids. And my other brother wants to when he has kids.

I was under the impression that you do have to follow the state's requirements, even so far as taking the state's exams.

Re: What are your thoughts on home schooling?

Many children that are homeschooled are involved in outside social activities and that is great, but socialization in school is entirely different than being in soccer, karate, girl scouts, etc. That is an hour 2 or 3 times a week - school is 6 hours of socializing, having specials together, eating lunch and having recess together, working cooperatively to complete academic tasks, learning from each other - each and everyday.

No, just the school's requirements. Another reason why it's not such a good idea...

Re: What are your thoughts on home schooling?

I am not trying to start anything but . . .I knew a girl that was homeschooled (we met through Girl Scouts when we were young) Her mom was a licensed teacher in NY and HAD to homeschool her because she had SEVERE allergies (to things like oranges, peanuts, and she was glutin intolerant) If she was put in a 'normal' school, she probably would have died, literally. Even now, there are no restrictions in schools when it pertains to cross contamination of possible allergins. I know that it is impossible to do this in public schools, but kids don't always know that they are allergic to certain things when they are young, and if this girl that I was friends with went to a public school and sat next to someone with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and she happend to get to close to it she could have gone into anaphalactic (sp?) shock. We were a 'peanut free' Girl Scout troop and her mom was a co-leader so she got her social interaction with other kids.

I don't personally agree to homeschooling but in certain situations it is necessary.

Re: What are your thoughts on home schooling?

While I'm sure that there are pros and cons, I'm against home schooling. A public or private school eduacation teaches more than math and reading skills. Beyond that, I feel that an educator who has the training and the desire to teach would do a far better job than I would.
