What are your views on the afterlife?

I am not really sure what I think about this topic, but I am curious to see what everyone else thinks.

Hope this topic doesn’t offend anyone…

I don't believe there is an afterlife.

I want to believe there is, but it doesn't seem possible to me.

I don't believe in an afterlife, but I wish I did.

Just taking a break!

I wanted to ask this question, because I want to believe there is an afterlife, or some sort of existence after death, but I am having a hard time believing it....

Re: What are your views on the afterlife?

As a Christian, I believe in Heaven.

However... I also believe in a form of reincarnation, which doesn't jibe with my Christian beliefs, but... I guess you could call me an open-minded Christian.

Basically, I feel like I have been on this earth for a very long time - lived many lives before this one. I'm an old soul... been told this by complete strangers, actually. I can't explain it, nor do I know how it blends into my belief of Heaven, so I'm a tad conflicted on this issue. Perhaps it's similar to how many Eastern religions feel that you need to go through many cycles in order to reach Enlightenment. Maybe I need to go through many lives in order to get to Heaven?

Good question, I could talk about it for hours. I'm sure this thread will be several pages long by the end of the day

That's interesting.
Have you always believed either way and just now are coming on some doubts in your beliefs?
I don't understand why you are having a hard time believeing it

I do not believe in an afterlife. I believe that when you die, you die - there is no heaven and there is no hell.

Great question!

A part of me does believe, because it is comforting .. the logical side of me doesn't , because there are no 'facts' to support it.

The reason I believe there is an afterlife is b/c I truly feel as though people in my life who have passed are 'somewhere' looking out for me.. I'm convinced my grandma has been helping me and my brother ever since she passed.. I've always believe she brought FH and me together somehow.

I know that might just be what I WANT to believe (its a comforting thought)...but since we don't know anything for certain I feel that these beliefs help keep my faith going, and my spiritual side in check.

Re: What are your views on the afterlife?

I like to believe in an afterlife, I think that when my family/ friends have died they're not alone and those other people are waiting for them. I like to think that I won't be alone. My one of my good friends died at 30 we all said she was still partying and snowboarding up in heaven. Or when an uncle died we said now they're together for their poker game. I think of it more to give me peace while I'm mourning my loved ones.

I feel very similar, like there has to be more to it than *blink* and its over...or maybe its just wishful thinking on my part. I like the idea/concept of having many lives, and that the people that surround us in this life are with us in every one. I like thinking that DH and I knew each other before...maybe that explains 'love at first sight'.
On this topic, I just finished the book The Lovely Bones...I thouht it was so interesting how she wrote about the afterlife...

I have to disagree about the heaven and hell comment, being that I am a Christian. Without believing in God or heaven, to me life would feel lifeless. When its my time to go I believe I will be reunited with my family whom have past, including my beloved pets.

See, I HATED that book! I would rather have 'lights out' than have the afterlife be like that. I can't think of anything else more horribly sad. I think I'm one of the few people who didn't like the book. Bad story, stupid idea of the afterlife, I thought. It was almost too 'literal' in a sense... looking down on your family, like you were floating on a cloud or something. Didn't like it.

Heaven is supposed to be a place where there is no time, or at least no conscious SENSE of time. Nirvana, Enlightenment, Heaven... all seem very similar to me. You have to work hard in life to get there.

I'm a circle of life gal...

you die and should not be buried in a coffin...but put back into the soil to replenish the earth so new plants/animals can live...

DH and i both think this way and are going to choose a tree in a national park (so it can never be cut down) to sprinkle our ashes to live on forever in the tree

That was so beautifully put. I agree with you. At times and some places I have been to I feel like I have been there before. that this is not my first time on Earth.

Re: What are your views on the afterlife?

I believe in past lives or rather some past experiences!

I do believe that spirits of those who past regenerate the spirits of those who are born after them. I do believe that our souls, for the lack of a better word, will meet with our loved ones when the time comes.

I don't believe in Heaven and Hell, it's just something that the church came up with to control people and therefore, the State! Also, it provides a very twisted view on life.

We should live and experience life and do good because we are here, living and breathing, because we were given the chance! That should be a good enough reason, not because we hope to be rewarded or repremmended for our deeds 'later'! JMO
