What did YOU need when you got home from the hospital?

What did YOU need when you got home from the hospital?

We all have lists and lists of what baby needs, but I am curious what made you feel better or what 'supplies' you needed.
I was thinking of getting mother's milk tea and I heard witch hazel on cotton helps 'special' areas feel better....anything else?
I also have the house being cleaned while I am in the hospital so I don't have to worry about that right away.

Too bad you cannot buy 'sleep'

Mother's Milk Tea is good and so is Fenugreek (it is an herbal supplement you take like a vitamin)...it really helped me

Okay, some of this is a little unpleasant, so be warned...but, someone has to tell you this stuff!

I also needed one of those soft cushion 'donuts' to sit on b/c my bottom was sore...you can pick those up at the pharmacy. Also, a sitz bath REALLY comes in handy to soothe the 'special' areas. I know for me, I did not feel comfortable sitting in the bathtub during those early recovery days, so the sitz bath got a lot of use. I don't know who told you the witch hazel thing, but I stuck with plain warm water, and that was just fine.

Also, ask your midwife if she can get you a prescription for a stool softener (sorry TMI). NOT a laxative - just a softener, so that your bowel movements after the birth are not difficult. The LAST thing you want to have to do is strain...

Dumb question- I have NO clue what a sitz bath is. I think I do but do you have to buy some special thing to do it in? Or some special solution?

I agree, NO straining after having a baby. So, I will ask for the Rx at my next appoitment. I don't want to have to 'run' out for that kind of stuff. You want to have that all ready to go

Is the donut pillow, like a boppy pillow for a mommy?

Donut pillow - yes, sort of....not as 'fancy' it's more like a foam ring...

The sitz bath looks sort of like a bed pan, but you place it on top of your toilet seat and fill it with warm water. Then you sit on it and soak those 'special' areas for about 15-20 minutes a few times a day. It really helps to soothe. No special solutions needed! Just the warm water.
Here's a link, just to see what it looks like:

Jenny, they are herbal supplements that have been known to help promote the production of breast milk.

Jodi

I just thought of another thing you'll need (and you'll want to bring some to the hospital too!)....a large box of the largest, most super absorbent, self-adhesive maxi pads known to womankind!

Some friends told me to make sure you take some from the hosptial since they get different ones then CVS carries.
And I cannot imagine poor Scott looking down 'that' aisle and saying to himself 'are pantylines more absorbent that these?' He would end up calling me from his cell phone, from the aisle, telling me that there are too many and he has no clue or buying one of each box

Michele, I would definitely buy some before you go to the hospital...JMO.

And, the ones that my hospital had were the 'old fashioned' kind that women used to use belts with, so no adhesive. I did not like the hospital ones, b/c they did not stay in place - and no wings (I like the 'wings' ones)

I thought it takes a while for AF to come after your baby is born especially if you breastfeed.

Re: What did YOU need when you got home from the hospital?

NovemberSue, you don't need the maxis for AF, but for the bleeding that occurs after you give birth.

What about nursing pads?? My sister had me run out to the drug store and pick up nursing pads, Tylenol, and Overnight Maxis.

What about a heating pad for lower back? Might come in handy.

A nice brand new warm and comfy robe from Victoria's Secret. Why not?! You earned it.

Good luck to all you mommies to be!!

ETS: My mom always tells me that her doctor told her to use Tucks and put one on the 'special area' to help the discomfort. She said it really worked well.

Michele, at NUMC, the will come in your room at least once a day to clean the bathroom and put more pads in there. Like Claud said, they are the type with belts, so you may not like them. I took a whole pack home with me and used them for a couple more days, until I bled less, and then used the 'super' ones.

Are you going to cook some meals and freeze them now?

Not to get too graphic here but...

How heavy is the flow during the first few days? Is it like a heavy AF? Or more?

Re: What did YOU need when you got home from the hospital?

We just got a freezer for our garage (which is off of the kitchen) and I am going to begin the 'cook and freeze' process in early November. Also, my stepmom is only 15 minutes away and I am sure she will bring me some food too

I am going to bring some of my own maxis to the hospital just in case I hate the ones they have.

I have a heating pad and ice packs already in the house. And I just got 3 new PJs- 1 nursing gown with a matching lite robe, 1 long flannel nightshirt and 1 top/bottom set. All will work with nursing the baby. Oh, and I got new slippers too- comfty, cozy ones A new robe....might tell Scott that would be a nice touch too.

kmcwed: Nursing school was good for something..I still remember:
sorry so graphic:
The flow is exceptionally heavy for the first few days and can last for about 5 days to a few weeks. The nurse in the hospital should check that the color is getting lighter from red to pink to a lighter color. They should do this as part of their assessment.
