What did you think of Bush's speech?

Original post by marymoon

I totally don't agree with him on a lot of issues and I think he spouted a lot of what in my eyes is BS, but I think he gave a really compelling speech and I think he won over a lot of swing voters. He seemed very decisive. When he said 'you know where I stand' that was such a powerful statement. It was the kind of speech I wish John Kerry would finally stand up and give. If he doens't, he's losing a lot of undecided voters to Bush.

See thats the point that Christine has. You get a certain 'energy' from Manhattan. If you don't feel this energy... then city life isn't for you and you would be happier in a country place like Maine.

I have been to other major cities too... Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Charlotte, Washington. You just don't get the energy there that you get in NYC.

Charlotte was a georgeous city though.

San Fran isn't bad... but what bothered me there was the homeless situation is actually quite bad. I mean... there are homeless guys in the GOOD parts of SF... right off Market. They are all over. Its like I had to dodge these arms sticking out asking for change.

Oh well... what can you do I suppose. It was still a nice city... but not NYC.

Sadly, I don't think there's anywhere I can live where I won't wonder what could happen. I don't think living in fear is exclusive to NYers. I don't live in fear now, I am aware and cautious, not scared. But unfortunately, I think that something can happen anywhere.

I wasn't referring to the subways. I was talking about right out in the streets. Like walking right down Market its pretty bad. I was quite surprised more than anything else.

Its not really that big a deal.... just an observation.

Kerry irritates me and whether or not we feel personally that we should be in the war or not, we are there and I'm sorry but it offends me that people talk so much about their opposition to it, my man is there fighting, right or wrong he has no choice in the matter and before anyone says his choice was made when he joined, he joined because it was the only option to get an education and provide for a family in the future and was told that there was a 99 % chance we wouldn't go to war while he was serving (by his recruiter) Unfortunately he signed the contract on August 11th, 2001 so with September 11th that all changed.

Its sad how many of our men/women there worry about how many people back home disagree with what they are doing, it makes them upset and worry about people will think when they get home.

It's a shame that more people don't just stand behind them in time of war. They barely have the essentials to survive while they are there, they deserve more than to see protestors and hear people bi*#hing at home.

I understand that your FH is doing the job that he signed up to do. I am sorry that so many young Americans enlist in the Armed Forces because it is the only opportunity offered to them to go to college or raise family. While I understand your frustration , I think that you should know that most of the people opposed to this war are that way because of concern for our men and women overseas. I hate the idea of our own men and women being killed and put in harms way for a reason that does not exist. I supported the war in the beginning. I think that Saddam is an evil man, but in the past few months I have realized that the facts were wrong. Our people are fighting to free a country. Noble , yes. Justified occupancy, no. There are no WMD's. We are in a war against a country that has done nothing to us. The protesters n( at least the ones I know) are not against your FH they are with him. They want his safe return. They want him home with you and serving his country here, where he is needed most.

Thank you Heidla, this is excactly what I wanted to say. No one is angry at the troops, they are angry that their lives are put at risk when maybe there were other options (the sanctions were working fine).

Part of the reason why NYC is remaining at orange is to get the additional federal funding and national guard protection that comes with it.

Bloomberg and Pataki could lower the level back to Yellow which the rest of the nation is at. But why if leaving it at orange gets you these extra perks?

NYC is definitely safer now than it was since shortly after 9/11. Frankly I don't even think about the terrorists and such anymore. The only time I think about it is if I read it on the web or in the news.

ny is not ANY safer then it ever was...come on man.how can you even say that....dont you thnik anyone at any time can do what ever they want......ie.. just walk on a subway, bus, mall.the list goes on and on....and as far as the MAYOR or gov loweriing the level ....know they cant it's not up to them......the extra perks.....ok lets think about this one....people dont travel to YOUR city because of the orange level, so whats the extra perks...new york is paying how much money to protect the city and and any given time anyone person or persons can change the safty of the city........

i am sorry that you think that the city is any ssafer but please tell me how prove me wrong i would love to agree with you.........after all my parents and lots of friends STILL live there and wont move away..so please PROVE me wrong

So true! Didn't we just LOSE a prisoner in LaGuardia airport last night? And how about the protestors who were able to get into the convention?

I LOVE NEW YORK!

I'll tell you, yea we have our problems but so does EVERY state, I don't want to hear that anywhere is perfect because if that was true the whole country would be moving there, okay.

Second New York has great opportunities and cutlure, yea we have the bad stuff to go right along with it but you take the good with the bad.

Reasons to stay,,,,,
Broadway, the nightlife, the museums, the pretzels (okay so this is just my personal reason, but I love the hot pretzels from the street vendors), the shopping, the sights, how many other cities in this country can you find something to do at any hour of the day or night??, EVERYTHING, look at how we came together in the wake of 9-11! NY ROCKS.

I'm staying put! and hoping that we make some more positive changes in the areas we need to.

edited to say....

its not worth fighting over unless your hubby or future hubby is there right now you have no idea how I feel, so don't IMPLY, that you do. I get extremely heated and emotional over these topics because I am one of the family members stuck at home with everything at stake, I have everything to lose right now with the troops still being there so my opinions are strong. I am not going to fight with anyone over my feelings, they are mine and I am intitled to have them, *one of the things troops fought for and my FH stands to protect today*

Actually it IS worth fighting over. I have ffriends who are civilians over there who have electrcity for an hour a day and no consistent running water, etc, whose lives were turned completely upside down by this war. It's worth fighting over because this war is polarizing the world and creating more enemies than friends for the US and that puts me and my family in danger. it is worth fighting over because my friends and neighbors have fought in iraq and I want to see them and all soldiers (including yout H) come home safely. The reason it's different from Normandy is not that today's soldiers are any less brave, noble, honorable, but that in WWII the soldiers were fighting a war that was worth fighting and winning. They were fighting a legitimate war, not a war entred into under false pretenses. Saddam Hussein is a terrible person, but there were no WMD's, the terror threat did not come from Iraq and the US has no right to occupy a sovereign country for shits and giggles. I don't fault your FH or any otehr soldiers for any of this. They are doing their jobs, doing what they are told will prtect our freedom. I personally don't agree with what they've been sent to do. I don't want your Fh or anyone else's put into harm's way unless it's absolutely neccessary, which I don't feel that it is. I want your FH to come home safely as soon as posisble, so really we're on the same side.

Re: What did you think of Bush's speech?

thank you for your kind words directed toward my FH and as for the rest of your post, as I stated earlier, I have way too much to stress over right now, don't need to argue our opinions, mine are strong being a USMC wifey-to-be is not easy, so I won't comment.

Edited to add this link:

Maybe not of mass destruction but they certainly weren't living at peace before our arrival

usmc

(by the way this is my future hubbys' unit, OHHH RAAHHH BABY, I am so proud of you boys! )
and many of them that my FH speaks to and works with on a daily basis are thrilled to have the American presence there.
