I dont think you need dancing lessons for your first dance. In fact, sometimes I think a big choreographed dance looks kind of cheesy. You both will be so into the moment and so emotional, it will look amazing.

just do the newlywed sway
yup. and it's so embarrassing.
finally at about halfway through our song, i actually motioned for the DJ to cut our song short because i couldn't take it anymore. they obliged.

i took basic ballroom lessons with my fiance (just for fun, not wedding specific). see if any of your friends can teach you a basic foxtrot or waltz. the basic steps are very easy, and it'll give you a firm basis to extend yourself beyond the sway :)

I recently went to a wedding where the couple danced for about 20 seconds and they pulled the 'everyone to the dancefloor, everyone is welcome to the dancefloor'
it worked pretty well.

What about going out to a small bar with your bridal party and/or fh to practice? It really helps too when you watch people. I think I saw a bridal how to video somewhere, possibly theknot.com. Good luck!

Re: What do you do if....
I practiced with DH before the wedding, but it didn't help. I am embarassed to watch us on the video...very uncomfortable, but at the time it felt like we were the only two on the whole planet and we didn't care what we looked like.

we did the newlywed sway!!! and we told our DJ in advance that we only want the spotlight on us for maybe 20 seconds giving the photographer enough time to take a few pics. then we wanted him to bring the BP and parents out so that no one was starring at just us anymore. it's so embarassing!!!!

Re: What do you do if....
Nobody can really teach you rhythm, rhythm is something you need to feel. Start by listening to music (all different kinds) by yourself and just try to feel the beats and rhythm of the song (count in your head if you must 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8). Then just do a safe dance step keep your arms relaxed and starting with your feet step, together, step, together, step, together, etc. Just keep doing that to get the feel of each song then when you feel comfortable add your own little hip sway, arms movements, or even booty bounce (LOL) that you want. Those are some of the foundations for dancing now are on your way to being a great dancer
Not necessarily everyone, but sometimes people who can't dance end up taking lessons then when they dance they end up looking robotic like they're thinking about how to dance too much. Just relax, nobody is worrying how you dance just that you look beautiful and are having a great time.
Any help you need just let me know I'm more than happy to help...I'm a dancer/dance teacher!
PS: And don't worry about the slow dancing, cause the guy (mostly) leads just put your arms around him and relax

Re: What do you do if....
i agree with the newlywed sway. . . very easy! i just have to stop FH from turning me around in tiny circles on the dance floor! makes me dizzy
but honestly once you have that wedding dress on - even girls who CAN dance just grab their dress and kind of swing it around!! no one will even notice!
have a glass of champagne, grab your dress and go nuts!!
i hate seeing myself dance on video too!!

If you are very uncomfortable, I would definitely let your DJ or Band know beforehand that you only want to dance solo for about 20-30 seconds and then invite everyone onto the dance floor.

Re: What do you do if....
IMHO, none of your guests are going to be like 'OMG she cant dance!' while you and DH are dancing. They are all going to be 'AWWW'ing no matter what--they wont even pay attention to whether or not you are missing steps or not dancing to the beat. FH and I are dancing thru the WHOLE first dance song and not inviting guests onto the dance floor at all during that song. I'm a HORRIBLE dancer and FH alwasy yells that I dont let him lead, but i dont care how bad we look on that floor--no one is really going to notice that (they will be crying and taking pictures) and most people will assume its because you are in a big dress anyway....we want to enjoy that special song and not worry about how we look dancing. My advice would be to practice a little with FH before the wedding, but dont stress over it.

Re: What do you do if....
i have two words for you: LIQUID COURAGE!!!!
don't sweat it! you'll be on cloud nine the entire night cause it will be your wedding, that you will forget you can't dance, and have a great time anyway!!!
and of course the liquid courage in the form of champagne is always wonderful.

Re: What do you do if....
MY fh wants lessons too, but I totally agree that you teach rhythm - what am I gonna do? Do you really think those choreographed 1st dances are really cheesy??? I was thinking that it would be cute?
