What do you give at Weddings?

Hi.

If this is too personal you are not obligated to answer.

When going to a wedding with FH if you are giving $$$ as a gift, typically how much do you put in an envelope?

My FH and I often disagree about what is appropriate. I think for a couple it should be a minimum of $200. We went to a wedding a couple of months ago of a co-worker (whom we socialize with )of his and he only wanted to give $100 and I felt that was too little.

While I am not saying that you should adhere to the pay for your plate logic, I do want to give a respectable amount.

What are your thoughts?

Re: What do you give at Weddings?

I don't give under $200 anymore. Especially if the wedding is a Saturday night affair.

MarcellaBella , lets say the wedding is at any hall in the NewYork Area.

Does that sway your decision?

Re: What do you give at Weddings?

I do try to do the pay per plate + a little extra.. It's easy that way. It's not a 'rule' though.

FH cousin got married and it was a very small affair in a firehouse- it was a buffet style that she had catered- we didn't give $100+ p/plate at her wedding.

I'd be thrilled if our guest list would give us per plate envelopes

Re: What do you give at Weddings?

I think $100 per person is appropriate, unless its a backyard wedding or held at a super expensive place (above 200 per plate) and you're aware of the cost.

Re: What do you give at Weddings?

I think you should consider your relationship with the person and what is financially acceptable for you. It really shouldn't matter where it is held or how much the cost per plate is. If one couple throws a backyard wedding or an afternoon wedding and pays for it themselves, why should they get less money that the couple whose parents pay for them to have a crazy expensive saturday night affair? It should totally depend on what you can afford and how close you feel the couple.

A gracious couple wont care what you give and will appreciate a monetary gift no matter what the amount.

Re: What do you give at Weddings?

I think it also depends on 'who'it is more so where the wedding is taking place.

Re: What do you give at Weddings?

We give at least $200 for friends and $300 or more for family members. To us it doesn't matter where the wedding is held. We are giving a gift to the wedding couple, not paying for our meal. A bbq or a wedding at the Waldorf would still get the same : ).

Re: What do you give at Weddings?

I think it's hard to say that people should give $$ to cover the plate, since unless you're familiar with wedding planning, you wouldn't necessarily know the price (or course unless it's a very casual or very formal affair)

I also don't think it should really matter, but that's just my opinion

I give at least $200 for friends, and more for close friends and family.

Re: What do you give at Weddings?

I think that less than 200 wont even cover the plate so that would be minimum, but i like to give a gift above the plate so whatever i can afford 250-300 300-400 for family.

Re: What do you give at Weddings?

Never under 200...last wedding I went to I gave $350 (cousin but not close) then to a close friend this past summer $500. It really depends who it is and where.

Re: What do you give at Weddings?

We give $200 and up depending on the relationship. Although we did give $150.00 to a couple this summer only because I hate being invited to weddings as a filler.

Re: What do you give at Weddings?

It depends on the relationshipo. Having just opened all our wedding gifts rarely do people cover the per plate amount. You will be very suprised at what you get.

Some people give just what they can afford. Some give more than you would have thought. The average runs about $200 a couple!

Re: What do you give at Weddings?

We never give less than $200. It does depend on who it is and how close you are to that person. We went to a wedding last year at a really nice place and gave $200 but felt bad afterwards. It was a REALLY nice wedding but we had already written the check and sealed the card. Oh Well!

Re: What do you give at Weddings?

I totally agree with give what you can afford and your relationship. I do not typically consider the place or day of the wedding (unless it was like in a diner or a small backyard bbq). My minimum was always $200 for people you are not that close but after my wedding and looking what I got I think we may up it to $225.

My wedding gifts ranged from 0 to $500 (from friends - - not incl. family). One couple gave us $100 but he was a young friend of the family who I know doesn't have a lot of money and I found that totally acceptable and generous. Now, DH's older cousin who is a millionaire an owns this pretty big company gave us $100 and I thought he was a cheapskate! Then I had a friend ex-coworker who I am still friendly (not best friends) with give me $350 and a shower gift of over $175..I thought that was really generous based on the relationship we had!
