Re: What do you give at Weddings?

I was shocked to get $100 from two people at my wedding (couples). 200 is def. the minimum, I think maybe even 225 now.

Re: What do you give at Weddings?

I agree that it depends on the relationship with the people BUT... now that I am planning a wedding and know how much is involved I will be a little more generous. Also, my wedding is in a 'backyard' and I am incurring alot more in fees for the estate, tent etc... that it is costing FH and me more than it would if we went to a catering hall.

Re: What do you give at Weddings?

i give my love and support. i dont feel a gift of monetary nature is necessary.

**since sarcasm seems to get lost in cyberspace, i have edited to say that i typically give about $200.
(but will gladly invite those who give $500 to my own wedding - whether or not i know you).

Re: What do you give at Weddings?

We usually give $200, unless we are close with the person, then it's more

Re: What do you give at Weddings?

I give a standard $200 for myself and DH, more if I'm in the bridal party (which always seems to happen lately). I dont necessarily agree with paying for your plate - if you choose to have your wedding in a place that charges $500 pp, more power to you, but you're not getting $1000 from me!

I think people should give what they can afford and/or judge by the relationship you have but I hate when I see people expecting to get a certain amount... thats not what I believe a wedding is supposed to be about.

Re: What do you give at Weddings?

Well I always try to cover the plate with a little extra. If it is friend that we are not really that close with definetly no less than $200. Close friends $200-300. Family $300-400.
On the flip side...do what you can afford.

Re: What do you give at Weddings?

for the most part, we will give $250...$300+ for close friends and family.....i agree that you shouldnt base the gift on where the wedding is held....giving a gift is about celebrating the couple's marriage and helping them start their new life together..i wouldn't give a lesser gift because they couldn't afford or just didn't want to have a saturday evening affair at an expensive catering hall...JMHO.....

Re: What do you give at Weddings?

Again, this is something that will vary depending on finacial situation and relationship. But I give between $200-$300. I do not alter my gift based on where the event is held. If a close friend wants a backyard BBQ or a wedding at the Plaza hotel I give the same amount.

I will say that I was shocked by some of the gifts that I got. My friends were more generous than many family members. My stepmom said that many people do not even realize that weddings cost what they do these days and that they think their plates probably cost about $50 or so. She said only people who are involved know what it costs to have a wedding these days.

My advise: Do NOT plan on 'making your money' back and when people (parents or FILs) ask you to invite people and tell you 'what's the big deal, you are going to get a gift and make your money back' do not count on that because it simply might not happen.

Re: What do you give at Weddings?

ooh, I'm sorry.. Looks as if I stirred up something mentioning where that wedding was held.. it really was the fact that our financial situation at the time- he was in school and I was the only one who worked. Plus, we're not that close w/ them. We also went to a beautiful wedding in a backyard of his other cousin and they went all out. However, we were still in the same situation, only me working, so we gave the same amount.

I will say, we went to a wedding at a hall and gave more, what we thought was a nice gift. Months later I got together w/ the bride and she brought up what the best man etc.. had generously given her. Then she looked at me and said, 'It's ok, I understand'. Mind you, we gave more to them than our own family! So- I guess you can't please everyone. (P.S.) I don't really speak to her anymore.
