Honest opinion (per your request):

TOTALLY inappropriate. Everyone know that ONLY The bride wears white. She MUST knwo that.

That dress in the photo is a WEDDING DRESS. They probably don't make it any other color except white & ivory.

I would tell her a small white lie: you went for your fitting & that SAME dress was there & that its an informal wedding dress. Tell her you asked the sales girls & they confirmed it. Then tell her that she can't wear a wedding dress to YOUR wedding.

ETA: I am inclined to agree with an above poster that if she wears white, she will feel stupid. The whispers of the crowd will make her uncomfortable. You can tell her this to save her the embarrassment.

Honestly, IMO it looks white to me....even if it was Ivory, I think I would be a little ticked off. It it was purple or some other color, I wouldnt mind...but not the color its showing as.

Personally, I'd be pretty unhappy about it. However, if it's OK with you, why not? If you're less than thrilled with your mother wearing this dress and she refuses to change colors after you've spoken with her, I doubt there's anything you can do about it. If she attends the wedding in any variant of a white gown, I recommend taking the high road and not saying anything in public (in private, understandably a different matter). She'll look foolish, not you.

Honest opinion--your mother has some issues with this wedding! Ivory is a wedding dress color, and she even wants to wear a lacy dress with a train! Sounds to me as if your mom isn't comfortable letting someone else be the center of attention, it looks like she wants to be the 'second bride.' Wants to have everyone saying 'Oh is this *your* wedding' in an arch fashion. Blech. I would squash that NOW, and keep an eye on her. I'm sorry to be harsh about your mom, but that's a sneaky trick, and one that I've heard of before on Etiquette Hell. It never worked out well. Your mom can get the dress in a nice pink or blue or even champagne, as long as it isn't 'ivory.'

I sooooo agree

actually thinking about it now when my mom asked what color dresses she can get I told her the colors for my wedding, pink, brown or ivory. So if she came wearing ivory I really wouldn't mind at all.

Re: What do you think about this dress?

I think everyone will know who the bride is - that is not the question or issue... the thing is that, like others have mentioned, there are a million other colors out there. NO ONE should wear white, ivory, off white, etc. to a wedding. If the dress has SOME ivory or white, that's ok, but not a full dress, especially with lace and a train, and long, in white/ivory.

I think that's just wrong and even if a few people don't really think so, most people at the wedding will most probably be thinking this. My friend's MIL wore an off white suit to her wedding and while she was ok with it, so many people thought that it was in poor taste and showed that the MIL had an issue with the bride being the center of attention.

If you're ok with it, that's fine. But in my opinion, it would be showing a lack of respect to wear that color head to toe to a wedding.

Edited for spelling.

Well she swears its Ivory! She lives in another state and my wedding is 24 days away so I won't be able to see it before and she's running out of time so I need to let her know tonight. I'm really not happy with it at all but I did see someone said their mothers dress dragged a bit so its not a first.

If you're not happy with it, then I would definately ask her to buy another dress. She has ample time to do that. She has 20 something days to find another one. Whether it's 'ivory' or 'white', I personally wouldn't be OK with it.

If she insists on wearing it tell her she can't stand next to you in any pics. It is just not going to look right and I would hate for you to get your proofs back and realize that in every pic she is blending into your dress or you into hers. I think it is just in bad taste. She should be wearing a color that compliments the bm dress color. JMO
