I'm a vegetarian, so we were considering having an all or mostyl vegetarian wedding. It woudlnlt be boring stuff. We'd like to find a caterer who can make creative, yummy dishes!
What would you think as a guest? Would it not be your tastes? Would you think it was cheap? Would you think it was interesting? Would you just be glad the couple was expressing their own tastes?
Thanks!

How would you feel if you went to a all veal wedding? If you really think that is ok...then do the all veggie wedding but if you think you would be annoyed..Hmmm i think i would choose other options..Maybe make it majority veggie.. This is coming from a veggie hater

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?
I would be one of those not too thrilled to attend a strictly veggie/vegan wedding people. I am not a big vegetable eater so I would the one sucking on a piece of bread and hitting a restaurant on the way home. I wouldn't be rude or complain at the wedding, but it would sort of be a waste of money to even pay the caterer for me to be there. I don't think it would be cheap, good fresh veggies/produce can be really expensive.
I agree with Divabride in that you should consider your guests when picking your menu, we had many things on our menu I don't like or care for or even allergic to because they are poplular and people tend to like it. We did that because we wanted our guests to enjoy themselves and their meal.
Since this is an ethical point for you, then you have to go with your conscience and not serve meat and let your guests know in advance.

I would do it, just add a fish, you can do some really good vegetarian pastas and things like that.. If you were Vegan, i would say no, then your way too limited.. IT'S YOUR WEDDING

I'm glad I got people to think about it for their weddings... it's something most people don't even think about, which is the problem. I've seen weddings where the cut out even the fish option to save money or whatever, and it was like...wow. I don't really blame anyone for that, I just think it doens't come to mind.
Anyway, an all vegetarian wedding doesn't mean like a stack of veggies and tofu on a plate,m it coud be a really delicious meal. I'm sure you've all eaten vegetarian dinners without trying to or realizing it. No meat doens't mean it's automaticlalt weird or rabbit food or something. I'm going to put some thought into it, but I'm really surprised by all of the aversion. I thought that it would be neat, and people would be glad not to have the same boring 3 choices
ETA: yeah, FH and I thought of having a 'normal' cocktail hour and a vegetarian dinner or vice versa
Marymoon, its your choice, but remember that even though your wedding is about you, it's also about your guests. I think you could compromise a bit. hat about making your CH all vegetarian, but offering 2 dishes including chicken or fish.

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?
I would never serve meat at a dinner party. My house is going to be meat free. FH is not a vegetarian, but eats vegetarian food with me. When we get married, he's gonna have a little fridge in the garage and a grill for meat. He has no problem with that at all. He knows I'm going to be doing most of the cooking, he likes my cooking and it sickens me to have meat around. I plan to entertain a lot, but I would never serve meat to my guests, so Im wondering why I should serve it at my wedding?
I think people really lose sight of a wedding. I think especailly in this region, weddings are all about being showy, and we talk a lot on these baords about what we expect and do you think this favor is cheap and that favor is cheap, and how a lot of people would be upset about a donation as a favor for example, but if that expresses who the rbide and groom truly are, then there's really nothing wrong with that. I think the guests should be ther to support the bride and groom and celebrate who they are and who they will be together, not go into it with a sense of expectation and entitlement, as in, I'm wearing a dress and cousging up $200 I better get a filet mignon and a silver plated picture frame! (to exagerate)..

I am going to call the CH to find out exactly what their veggie option is. I don't know of any vegetarians coming to the wedding, but I will make sure they have a decent option.
Steph said she was going to make sure there was decent veggie food at her wedding. That's what I mena about making people think..it's a small thing, but you never knwo who is a vegetarian or who will bring a vegetarian date, etc

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?
A suggestion: I went to a vegetarian chinese restaurant a few months ago that served all vegetarian food BUT some of their dishes tasted just like different types of meat; there was 'steak,' 'BBQ pork,' 'chicken' - that tasted just like the real thing, but was completely vegetarian. The owner said that they have had people come and eat at their restaurant and not even realize that they were eating vegetarian food until they were told! Maybe your caterer could do something like this for you.
But, whatever you decide - I wish you all the best! I'm sure your wedding will be fantastic!

Yes but then you are not showing the same consifderation for meat eaters??? What about your thinking? Why not allow a decent meat dish...sounds like you are teaching something you don't follow

Marymoon, not to be mean, but you are getting really defensive. You asked everyone's opinion and are now berating people who don't agree with you. Honey, we all ave differing opinions and like most people said, you can do what you want because it's your wedding. But don't now accuse people on here of 'all about being showy'.

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?
I agree that it is 'your' day, but you are also hosting a party, and to impose your eating lifestyle on your guests, IMHO is not very hospitable.
I went to a veggie wedding recently. I am very open about food, and it tasted good...but really, it was very dissapointing in general. You could see it in the faces of the people around us. It kind of brought the dinner part of the party to a strange lull. Not to mention we were all STARVED by the time we finished dancing a few hours later. It did not sustain us! It picked back up again, but I really think, unless at least half of your guests are veggie, it is not cool.

I don't mean to sound rude..By all means it is your wedding and i will be having a veggie dish but there will also be a fish dish (we don't eat any fish) and a meat dish...

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?
I'm not berating anyone at all. I'm really interested in people's opinions...and I'm not specifying that anyone in aprticular is showy, but that it's in our collective cultrue to expect certain very specific things when we go to a wedding, when that's not neccesarily what it's about. I'm not saying like, it's you who are disagreeing with me who are showy, etc, I think it's just what's around us in general..When people talked about giving donations for favors, I was kind of divided about it, too, but now that I'm thinking about it, all it is is just something different than what we're expecting.
And the difference is when you don't provde a meat meal, there's stilla full, realy hearty vegetarian meal for a meat eater to eat, if you don't provide a vegetarian meal, there are no other options...A meat eater cna eat my eggplant, but I can't decide 'oh, no vegetarian option, guess I'll have a steak.'
I was suprised that people would feel so strongly about it and I didn't think people would actually feel offended. I'm glad to have all of these opinions so I can take them into consideration, I honestly didn't think it would be a big deal to people.

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?
To be honest, the meal is suppossed to be for the guests ya know...most bride and grooms dont even eat much that day so I would not do all vegitarian...I would say by all means have at least some vegitatarian choices but at least one meat...MY fh eats next to nothing and if he had no chicken/ beef would be left hungry....
Most people are not vegitarian's...I think we are having 4 out of 200 invites...even if you had a lot of friends that were, they would still be the minority and I think its best to go with what makes the majority happy...

Actually, I do not find that to be true. There are people just as adamant about not eating veggies as you are about not eating meat. Forcing them to eat veggies (which is what you would be doing by not offering an alternative), IMO, will not go over well.

Still, I mean, i alkready said I don't and will not serve meat at dinner parties, Am I honestly supposed to compromise my own morals to make the majority happy? I'm not trying to impose my lifestyle on anyone. I never say a word to anyone or try to make anyone else a vegetarian, however, I don't want to go out and serve meat either. With me it isn't for health or cause it's trendy, it's a moral issue. Would you have such a negative impression of someone who kept kosher having an all kosher wedding? Would you tell them the meal is for the guests?
I'm really just trying to get sides here, if I seem to be playing devil's advocate, in a way, I am.

Honestly, not being a vergetarian I would not enjoy the option of not having a choice of a meat. I think a lot of people would be upset. JMO

In response, I've never heard of anyone with a moral opposition to eating vegetables.

If you wouldnt' serve it in your home, I wouldnt' serve it at your wedding. People should be going to your wedding to celebrate your new union with you - not for the free meal.

You can't really make a comparison like that because I have never heard of anyone being morally opposed to vegetables.
But of course some people don't like them.
I am assuming there will be starches too, right? Vegetarian dishes I can think of right now that aren't too far from traditonal wedding food include: risotto, peppers stuffed, with beans & rice or just rice, pasta primavera, stuffed (pasta) shells etc.
an no, I am not a vegetarian.
Marymoon, definititly talk to some catering places about this. I'm sure people who don't eat meat for religious reason have vegetarian weddings too. There are entire cultures that don't eat meat--I don't think its that strange.
I went to a wedding where my freind's date just ate the side dishes, I felt awful. There wasn't even much of a coctail hour-no could dispalys of cheese & bread & fruit, etc. I am making sure my vegetrian a guests know there is a vegetarian option, and the things we have a choice on (like the four chafing dishes) will have at least 1 vegetarian option.
