What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?

Original post by marymoon

I'm a vegetarian, so we were considering having an all or mostyl vegetarian wedding. It woudlnlt be boring stuff. We'd like to find a caterer who can make creative, yummy dishes!

What would you think as a guest? Would it not be your tastes? Would you think it was cheap? Would you think it was interesting? Would you just be glad the couple was expressing their own tastes?

Thanks!

If you wouldnt' serve it in your home, I wouldnt' serve it at your wedding. People should be going to your wedding to celebrate your new union with you - not for the free meal.

That's what I think.

And the difference is when you don't provde a meat meal, there's stilla full, realy hearty vegetarian meal for a meat eater to eat, if you don't provide a vegetarian meal, there are no other options...A meat eater cna eat my eggplant...

You are making too many assumptions about things. What you think are options for some may not actually be. There are many people who don't like or cannot eat certain vegetables. Many vegetarian dishes have things like nuts or tomatoes. May people are allergic to those. And really, you know how gassy those veggie meals make you. Do you really want people farting throughout your entire reception?

Anyway, no one is telling you not to have vegetables. We are saying to just have options other than ones with no, meat.

Marymoon, not to be mean, but you are getting really defensive. You asked everyone's opinion and are now berating people who don't agree with you. Honey, we all ave differing opinions and like most people said, you can do what you want because it's your wedding. But don't now accuse people on here of 'all about being showy'.

I have to agree. Your question seemed to ask for opinions but then when people's opinions aren't the same as yours you get defensive...and a bit offensive (the showy remark). I don't think that anyone having meat at their wedding qualifies as 'showy' and personally I think that was a very odd thing to say.

Do what you want for your wedding but if you don't want other people's opinions, don't ask for them.

what will you do about the people who don't like veggies or fish. I know my sister hates veggies and I don't eat fish - then what will people eat??

It is your wedding and you do what ever makes you happy - but you also don't want any unhappy or hungry guest at the end of the night.

In response, I've never heard of anyone with a moral opposition to eating vegetables.

You're right. But I don't think it has to be a moral decision for you to respect it. I would never expect you to eat meat, no matter what your reason, be it medical, ethical or you just plain dont want to.

Still, I mean, i alkready said I don't and will not serve meat at dinner parties, Am I honestly supposed to compromise my own morals to make the majority happy?

Hmmm...I have to state this: you are already compromising your morals by marrying someone who doesn't share the same morals as you do. You already stated that your fiance eat's meat. So er..I just had to bring that up.

How would you feel if you went to a all veal wedding?

You can't really make a comparison like that because I have never heard of anyone being morally opposed to vegetables.

But of course some people don't like them.

I am assuming there will be starches too, right?
Vegetarian dishes I can think of right now that aren't too far from traditonal wedding food include: risotto, peppers stuffed, with beans & rice or just rice, pasta primavera, stuffed (pasta) shells etc.

an no, I am not a vegetarian.

Marymoon, definititly talk to some catering places about this. I'm sure people who don't eat meat for religious reason have vegetarian weddings too. There are entire cultures that don't eat meat--I don't think its that strange.

I went to a wedding where my freind's date just ate the side dishes, I felt awful. There wasn't even much of a coctail hour-no could dispalys of cheese & bread & fruit, etc. I am making sure my vegetrian a guests know there is a vegetarian option, and the things we have a choice on (like the four chafing dishes) will have at least 1 vegetarian option.

For whatever reason we don't eat the food..So what if it is because i amnot morally
against it..
WHat if i was allergic

Heres an idea. Could you indicate on your RSVP what kind of entree your guest would like? I actually never heard of that option until I came here, but it might be a good idea for you.

people are allergic to all kinds of foods, so you can't really choose your menu based on what people MIGHT be allergic to!

I think you can do it but it has to be a VERY good caterer.. and I think to do it, would be VERY expensive.

i dare say that most of the people on here wouldn't even notice a vegetarian wedding until they got to the sit down portion..

I'm thinking for the cocktail hour things like:

Crostini, stuffed artichokes, vegetarian dumplings & dim sum, stuffed mushrooms, bean and cheese quesedillas, vegetable sushi, etc.

I am just NOT a fan of those fake meats..

To be honest, the meal is suppossed to be for the guests ya know...most bride and grooms dont even eat much that day so I would not do all vegitarian...I would say by all means have at least some vegitatarian choices but at least one meat...MY fh eats next to nothing and if he had no chicken/ beef would be left hungry....

Most people are not vegitarian's...I think we are having 4 out of 200 invites...even if you had a lot of friends that were, they would still be the minority and I think its best to go with what makes the majority happy...

Still, I mean, i alkready said I don't and will not serve meat at dinner parties, Am I honestly supposed to compromise my own morals to make the majority happy? I'm not trying to impose my lifestyle on anyone. I never say a word to anyone or try to make anyone else a vegetarian, however, I don't want to go out and serve meat either. With me it isn't for health or cause it's trendy, it's a moral issue. Would you have such a negative impression of someone who kept kosher having an all kosher wedding? Would you tell them the meal is for the guests?

I'm really just trying to get sides here, if I seem to be playing devil's advocate, in a way, I am.

Yes I would still find it unaccomadating if it was all kosher because the couple was....whats funny here is that so many brides complain that they dont get the 'plate back' in cash...why is that? Because the food is for the guests...( not my opinion though but one that is one there) If you are having 125 people and ten people dont eat meat, whether you believe it to be moral or not, what would you serve? I know there are a lot of choices, but I would only feel uncomfortable knowing that the majority of the guests would not be happy with what they have to eat and they spent a lot of money/effort coming to my wedding...
I think that it is proper to give a host of choices....thats why we plan on having a fish meal, a beef/chicken and a veggie meal...so all are happy

As far as moral goes( and on the same note as kosher) ...Im getting married on a friday during Lent and offering beef/chicken and while if I was very relgious it would be against my religion to eat it , I will still serve it....and I dont think those invited to my wedding who are very relgious and wont eat that choice would be offended by it being offered....

morals are personal beliefs and unfortunatly we live in a world where your personal beliefs are your own and at something like a wedding they should be introduced by all means but not the focus....
This is JMO...if you were to do all vegitarian, I might find it difficult to find something to eat and eat something after but I would still say 'it's your wedding, do as you please'...I wholeheartdedly believe that, just giving my honest opinion why I'd be not for this choice...

YES!

I think this is the point here...

Going to a wedding and being 'disappointed' with anything I think is pure cr@p. People definitely have likes and dislikes but to be 'annoyed' with anything I think is pushing it. You are there to support the couple and whatever they decide to do should be good enough. If they want to do something different, let them!

Be unique! Be classy! Do the veggie thing! Open your minds ladies!!!!

with a kosher wedding you still have a choice between meat and vegetarian. with a vegetarian wedding you do not have the choice of eating meat.

keeping kosher is part of jewish law, or halacha. you are supposed to have a kosher wedding when getting married b/c that is what is written in jewish law.

people who keep kosher would not be be able to eat food at a non kosher wedding. non kosher people can always eat kosher food. we are having kosher meals specifically brought in for FHs family b/c they are extremely religious.

etd to add: with a kosher wedding you usually will know by the invitation, if it's being held a jewish center etc. maybe you could let your guest know that it is a vegetarian wedding in advance?

Marymoon,

again, I think you should do what makes you most comfortable. But let the guests know beforehand that the wedding will be all vegetarian. This way, if they really want meat, they can get some before they get to your wedding.

I don't believe there is no moral opposition, but some people just don't eat veggies no matter how creative or well prepared the meal is.

Let me ask you this: How receptive do you think your guests will be to a vegetarian wedding?

no problem, hun!!

i understand people's moral convictions are strong and i think that marymoon's intentions are admirable. i am only giving my perspective that i would be disappointed, but, i probably would have a good time regardless as long as there is dancing!!!!
